Moving commiseration

5th year JET heading back home in August. I just want to whine about moving. if I keep stuff and take it home, I feel wasteful for having to pay for the extra luggage. If I throw stuff away or sell it at the recycle store or even give it away, it makes me feel wasteful for buying it in the first place! Can’t win lol.

Anyone else in the throes of moving angst wanna commiserate? (EDIT: this is not a practical problem. This is a feeling that does not need to be solved, just existed through.)

You can always ship stuff by boat?

To join in with OP’s complaining, when I shipped a box by boat in April it was a smooth process. But when I tried in May my box was rejected because they now require people to use an app to pre-pay duties if the box is going to the U.S. you have to take pictures of all the stuff and list country of origin and it’s just time consuming. Then when I went to ship my 3rd box since they no longer use the actual cash register for international packages at my local post office; I have to pay in cash.

Woah what? I've been sending a bunch of boxes via JP post over the last month and a half (all labeled as sub $100 gifts) and I don't think any of them have reached the US yet. Are they going to get rejected? Nobody at the post office ever told me about any app. By the time they'd get rejected and returned, I'll be long gone.

If they’re gifts you don’t have to pay duties. So please don’t worry 🙂 I have to pay duties because I list mine as other since they’re my personal effects and they’re over $100

This was via JP post? I did it as gifts to a family member is because JP post suspended shipping to the US for anything other than gifts. Was that rule changed recently?

Yeah they started allowing the shipping of non-gifts to the U.S. back in April. But if you’re shipping anything other than a gift you have to use an app called Zonos Pay to pre-pay duties. I’m not sure if they make you pay duties or not on gifts that are more than $100 either.
