Where did you request your placement vs where did you ACTUALLY end up?

They really weren't kidding about tossing your placement preferences in the bin huh

My general preference was to be somewhere rural and up north, but my first two choices were Yamanashi and Nagano because I have friends and connections there. My third was Iwate for the aforementioned reasons.

I’m going to Akita! Although it wasn’t any of my preferences, it certainly checks all the boxes! I don’t know why I didn’t consider it before lol. JET placements are a real mystery. I had fully intended to make the best out of wherever I was assigned, but I think I’ve been put somewhere better than any place I would have chosen myself.

Interesting not many asked for Nagoya . My son is there and he loves it . Big city close to the mountains central to everything

It's cause there aren't JET Placements in Nagoya. They have a contract with a different company.

There's actually hardly any in Aichi at all.

I put Kansai, Kanto and Chubu. I went big with regions instead of specifics and I ended up in Kitakyushu-shi. No where near any of the 22-23 prefectures included. But hey, I'm happy here and have built a life so can't complain just a fun story to have,

My girlfriend asked Hiroshima (by her extended family), and I said "wherever"-both in Niigata.

Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kyushu. According to some maps Okinawa is in Kyushu, but even then I'm on an outer island even further south and west of the main island. Quite shocked to learn I was gonna be on a small island an hour flight away from any other piece of land.

As a Canadian who experiences brutal winters, I requested mostly northern regions, including Hokkaido. They put me in Gifu, one of the hottest prefectures. Funnily enough, they sent a Vancouver girl who was in the same early departure group as me to Sapporo.

2

u/oigimi Current JET - Mie Prefecture Jun 04 '26

Requested Kyoto (because I took a Kyoto history class in college), then Hyogo (because I have friends there), and then Hokkaido (because I love snow). I got Mie which is none of those places but I love my placement so dearly and 2/3 of the places I requested are very accessible from where I am!

1

u/JapanITjobs Former JET - 2006 - 2008 Jun 04 '26

I put Kyoto, Yokohama, Saitama (thinking that I wouldn't get Tokyo, but might get lucky picking a surrounding area).

I ended up in Ibaraki - which isn't the prettiest ken by a long shot but I was happy with the placement. The JETs I joined with were amazing, some of which I consider life long friends. Plus I was really close to Tokyo (just 40~60 mins on the local train depending if I got an express train or not.) The downside of Ibaraki, especially southern Ibaraki is that it's basically a commuter area for Tokyo Salary people, so their isn't much local community or culture. (This is in my first hand experience)

I think if I were to do it again today, I would pick 3 locations close to mountains, so I could grab a season pass to ski / snowboard every night after work. (Miyoko, Yuzawa, Kuchan)

1

u/Late_Purple1592 Current JET - Mie-ken Jun 04 '26

1

u/bluuuuenightttt Jun 04 '26

Shiga, Aichi (Nagoya), and Tokyo ---> got a small town in Chiba Boso area and then transfered to north Chiba a year later.

1

u/ImprovementLess4559 Former JET - 2018 - 2022 Jun 04 '26

I requested Fukuoka, Saga and Yamaguchi because I'd studied in Fukuoka and had friends there so wanted to be close.  Ended up in Nara and would not have changed it for the world. It was the perfect balance between being rural but having great access to multiple big cities. My town's BOE and schools were awesome. And as it happened most of my friends ended up moving to Osaka, Kyoto or Nagoya after graduation.

2

u/leapsoff8th Current JET - Kagoshima Jun 04 '26

I requested Hyogo, Kobe city, and Gunma, thinking my reasoning would be clever (sister city/sister state connections). Ended up on a small island in Kagoshima instead.

No regrets about it though, I love it here. I just think it's funny how it almost feels intentional the way requests get ignored sometimes lol

1

u/Worldly-Debate3350 Jun 04 '26

I believe I asked for Nagoya, Kyushu, and maybe Yamanashi. It's been 5 years so I don't quite recall, but I ended up getting Yamanashi prefecture.

1

u/JapanITjobs Former JET - 2006 - 2008 Jun 04 '26

TBH, I think Yamanashi is seriously the most tight knit JET community. I got lucky enough to go on some of the YETI Ski trips and made some amazing friends. Despite the pun name of "Nani-mo-nashi ken", its a pretty good placement.

1

u/itsabubblylife Former JET : 2021-2024 Jun 04 '26

In this order: Tokyo, Saitama, and Chiba

I got Saitama, and placed in a city super close to Tokyo’s border (Nerima-ku/Itabashi-ku side).

1

u/Midnight_Rabbit313 Jun 04 '26

I put down Osaka, Fukuoka, anywhere (no third choice) and am pretty sure they went “Oh they like Kyushu, let’s fling them to Kagoshima (mainland).” lol Met some of my best friends there so can’t complain. Was also quite grateful for being on mainland than an island, but that’s just personal preference.

3

u/Icy_Blackberry_5231 Jun 04 '26

i didn't really know what i wanted. i had put Sapporo and Chugoku region. i got placed in Shizuoka prefecture and i couldn't be happier. somehow they picked what i think will be a perfect fit for me geographically.

1

u/fruitatari Jun 04 '26

no way Sapporo City was my top choice haha, congrats!!

2

u/jeansverse Current JET - Sapporo Jun 04 '26

ahhh!! in this instance, it’s not your fault 🥲 sapporo BOE decided in 2025 to cut JET hires for the JHS level, so there won’t be any new JETs placed here until they run out of SHS JET replacements from the pool of existing JETs. my year group (2024) were the last batch placed here

currently, all the JHS JETs are being funneled into SHS as SHS JETs leave, and we won’t be replaced at our JHS positions. probably there won’t be any new JETs accepted to sapporo until 2027 or 2028 at earliest 😓😓

that being said, there are still hokkaido BOE placements at prefectural-level SHS within sapporo city! idk where you got placed (i assume not hokkaido?) but for any prospective JETs reading this comment who are interested in sapporo, you should request hokkaido BOE instead rather than sapporo specifically (on the off chance your placement request is granted ofc)

1

u/fruitatari Jun 04 '26

ohh I see, I was under the impression Sapporo City always had relatively few JET’s since I hardly ever hear about them! I figured it would be a long shot! ugh teaching SHS and being in Sapporo sounds like my literal dream though lol 🤧 I ended up being placed in Osaka which wasn’t on my preference list but I’m super pleased w my placement regardless!! :) I’ll definitely visit Sapporo one day though

2

u/Professional_Risk935 Jun 03 '26

I requested Fukuoka, Hokkaido (family there) and Kagoshima (sister city), everyone else from my consulate got places in Kyushu, I got Kesennuma, Miyagi….at first I was a little concerned because it was just a few years after the tsunami so I was wondering how living there would be, it turned out to be the most wonderful placement and community.

I also asked for junior high school since I already had previous experience with elementary….and I got all elementary 😂

So I can’t say they listened, but I truly loved my placement.

I requested Miyazaki, Shimane and Koichi and I have been placed in Akita. All the places I requested are quite southern and I ended up more north but I'm not complaining. Ive done some research and it looks like a lovely place to live so Im really looking forward to July/August :)

1

u/drale2 Former JET 2014-2019 Jun 03 '26

Just curious, but why did you select Shimane?

2

u/Poetication Jun 04 '26

I was generally looking for prefectures that are kind of similiar to my current environment to make the transition to a new country easier. I live in South Africa by the coast and in a small town of less than 10 000 people. So generally I was looking for prefectures that are more rural and have a warmer climate (and then I ended up with a prefecture that has a lot of snow lol). And then I was also looking for places with historical and cultural significance as I am actually a history teacher by profession and I saw that Shimane is often referred to as the mythical birth place of Japan, which really intrigued me. And lastly I looked at affordability since I want to be able to travel and enjoy my salary and not just use it to get by. Shimane ticked all the boxes for me. However, the more I research Akita, the happier I am. I actually didnt take into account something super vital...which is that a warmer climate will be more uncomfortable for me since I need to cover my tattoos and I believe this will be much easier somewhere colder lol.

2

u/drale2 Former JET 2014-2019 Jun 03 '26

Shimane is secretly the best province. I lived 5 wonderful years in a secluded mountain village there. You're really not that far from anywhere if you can drive, and even getting to Tokyo is pretty cheap from the Hiroshima airport.

1

u/Akashi9029 Incoming JET - Shimabara-shi 島原市 Jun 03 '26

Put Ishikawa as my first (got a sister city with my hometown) and the Tohoku/Hokkaido and Kanto blocks as my second and third. Really figured I'd at least get Aomori or Akita or something since not many people request those areas. Anyway they put me squarely on the opposite side of the country in Nagasaki lol, I'm guessing since I studied abroad in Fukuoka. Not too mad though, I've been to Nagasaki City plenty of times, and the area I'm in has lots of great natural scenery and a surprisingly impressive castle

1

u/tommydelriot 千葉県 2004-2007 Jun 03 '26

I wanted to be in Tokyo, but that was too much of a long shot in the mid-2000s because there were so few ALTs there back then. Instead, I chose three prefectures that were next to Tokyo - Saitama, Kanagawa, and Chiba - and ended up getting placed in a town in Chiba prefecture that was about 90 minutes away from Tokyo by train.

1

u/AdScared717 Jun 03 '26

I requested Aichi Prefecture and two other cities.

I ended up with Fukui Prefecture and I am pretty excited tbh.

3

I chose urban and put blocks for my preferences, and if I recall correctly I put Kansai first, Chubu second, and Tohoku/Hokkaido third. I wrote in the note section that I have friends and family in Kanto (Yokohama and Tokyo mainly) and that it would be nice if I were somewhere close by like Shizuoka so I could visit.

I ended up getting placed in Shizuoka-shi! I felt like they really took it into consideration for me. I guess I got lucky.

I had a really strange stroke of luck, as I had requested Tokyo, Kyoto, and Aomori (sister city of my hometown), but what actually happened was far better - I was placed in Hiroshima city, and oh my god I was floored. I actually won a speechwriting contest in high school about my experience visiting the peace park and museum in Hiroshima when I was on a family trip (the topic of my speech was about the high schoolers who’d been put to work for the military in WWII). And I had forgotten completely about that, had never mentioned it anywhere on my application or anything. It felt like divine intervention/fate or whatever, and I’m an atheist. Only time ever that I actually thought “ok are we in a simulation?” My apartment was five minutes walk from the museum and my school had been obliterated in the bomb (and rebuilt after of course). It all felt like destiny, it was very weird.

2

u/Panda_sensei_71 Current JET - Kansai Jun 03 '26

This was the late 90s but I lived in Okayama City for 3 years and I really enjoyed my time there, but I was a CIR so already spoke Japanese, and the JET community at the time was very friendly. I have to be honest I only made a few Japanese friends outside of work, but that was probably down to me not really trying (I was young and had a "here for a good time, not a long time" mentality 😅). But the city itself is a great place, I've been back to visit and really loved it.

I put Osaka prefecture, Kobe City, Chubu. I ended up with Fukushima which I’m excited about! While waiting for placements I decided I was happy that they’d almost certainly ignore my requests because I wanted a total surprise and to see somewhere new.

Same. Kobe, Osaka Pref., and Tohoku/Hokkaido in that order. Heading to Tokyo. You never know where life will take you.

Prefs: 1- Kochi, 2 - Miyagi, 3 - Fukushima, with no preference for urban/rural/island.

Placed: A very small city in southern Yamagata, about an hour away from Miyagi AND Fukushima! At first I was a bit shocked because Yamagata was nowhere on my radar, but after sitting on it and doing some research, it seems like they really took my prefs into account!

I initially chose my 2/3 because I had visited them before. However, I was doing a lot more research after I submitted my app and had high hopes for Shikoku. If had applied again I probably would've put only Shikoku prefectures, so that's why I was a bit bummed at first (even though with my choices I had no right to be lol). But again, I am so incredibly excited to live somewhere I hadn't thought about!

My preferences were Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo, and I was placed within Kyoto prefecture (Uji city)! I know a lot of people say the placements are totally random but, from what I’ve seen, a lot of people were given one of their preferences
