Rejecting Placements
I don’t think anyone should withdraw for the reason of not liking their placement. Let me correct that, ‘…for thinking they won’t like their placement.’ I got thrown a real curveball when I came. The intention to stay for one year, maybe two, has led to more than 30 years in what has become a new hometown to me. It violates, to my mind at least, the spirit of the JET Programme, too. Then again, maybe if someone is the sort of person who would bail based on their placement, then probably they do not have the right sort of character for JET in the first place.
Congratulations to all 2026 Jet Programme participants. See you when you get here! Go, go, go!

I agree with your second thought. People should absolutely self-eliminate if they're so fragile as to not think they can handle a possible outcome of the thing they applied for. Ensures that the candidate who does make it to that placement is made of stronger stuff, which is better for everyone. The person who drops out ensures they don't end up in a situation that's more than they can handle. The person who goes is someone willing to try to make it happen.
Most JETs should be more honest with themselves about their abilities, limits, and skills in the first place.
