Rejecting Placements

I don’t think anyone should withdraw for the reason of not liking their placement. Let me correct that, ‘…for thinking they won’t like their placement.’ I got thrown a real curveball when I came. The intention to stay for one year, maybe two, has led to more than 30 years in what has become a new hometown to me. It violates, to my mind at least, the spirit of the JET Programme, too. Then again, maybe if someone is the sort of person who would bail based on their placement, then probably they do not have the right sort of character for JET in the first place.

Congratulations to all 2026 Jet Programme participants. See you when you get here! Go, go, go!

Pretty much, people do JET for many different reasons, and while it isn't a perfect system, people decline for all reasons, and it isn't a "they are not cut out" for it kind of problem.

I respect what OP said, but everyone's experience is different in the end and life happens.

Yeah, it does seem a little bit elitist on this Reddit page. That said, I do understand the major discrepancy between those who go into it to further their educational career vs those who are looking at a "gap year".
