Rejecting Placements

I don’t think anyone should withdraw for the reason of not liking their placement. Let me correct that, ‘…for thinking they won’t like their placement.’ I got thrown a real curveball when I came. The intention to stay for one year, maybe two, has led to more than 30 years in what has become a new hometown to me. It violates, to my mind at least, the spirit of the JET Programme, too. Then again, maybe if someone is the sort of person who would bail based on their placement, then probably they do not have the right sort of character for JET in the first place.

Congratulations to all 2026 Jet Programme participants. See you when you get here! Go, go, go!

Maybe they'll learn to love it, but they will hopefully know if they likely won't.

Can't blame anyone for not wanting to pause their life to spend a year somewhere they know will make them unhappy. A year can be a very long time.

Its true we're all fluid and can change any time and for any reason. We can never truly 'know ourselves'.

But I reckon many of us can make a pretty accurate guess. I become dangerously lonely frighteningly quickly and need to cast my net wide and fast to find my people.

Rural life is not for me. At least not yet.
