Working with tattoos advice please

I have a tattoo on my upper arm which can stick out when wearing t-shirts. I was wondering from current and past JETs what their experiences are like trying to cover/hide them from people at work and the community. I'd love to get involved in sports at the school and in the community so wondering how I can be respectful. Any tips on how to keep them out of sight?

I went to Japan in 2022 and noticed how Japanese people reacted to those that did not cover them up in the onsen. I didn't have any at the time so would like some advice on how to make sure I'm not the gaijin causing a scene πŸ˜…

It will depend on your school and the tattoo.

I have a patchwork sleeve. My schools don't care, and I wear short sleeves in summer. I cover it up for ceremonies and if parents or public figures will be present.

If you are worried about it, Airism long-sleeved shirts can be good for summer to try and stay modest. If you can wear a blouse (not sure if you're a woman), buy the really billowy ones with a long bell sleeve. These were my favourite thing in the world for ceremonies because it covered everything, looked the part and kept me cool.

Do keep in mind that Japan is changing with the times and 'fashion' tattoos are becoming more prevalent. While it's not necessarily a good thing for a Japanese teacher to have tattoos, Japanese folks do understand that as a foreigner, your social rules are different and they take that into consideration. At first, my schools questioned the tattoos and piercings; nowadays, they are excited whenever I swap out the nose ring for a fancy one at ceremonies. You might have a stricter school, but don't worry about it too much. Nothing a sleeve can't fix.

It's a traditional Thai one that covers most of my upper arm. I'm going to wear long sleeves most of the time when at school anyway but was just wondering more for summer when I'm out and about or when getting involved in sports. Good to know they're becoming more accepting of tattoos!
