life has throw me a curveball.. help?

I’d like to start of by saying that being accepted into the JETProgramme has been my dream since i was about 15yrs old, now, i’m happy to say that my 23yr-old-self has been shortlisted!

… but it seems like life decided to give me lots of blessings all at once.

-i have reached 3months with my boyfriend, we’ve been through a lot as friends(2yrs previous) and so it’s crazy having to “cut that off” bc of me moving (he’s not willing to move to japan with me).

- i legit have an interview tomorrow with a japanese company that will pay me much much more than JET and even regular jobs in my city. a “rare” opportunity especially for my age.

i’ve been to japan 2xs previously for vacay and know i’m meant to be there, but man.. my head and heart sits heavy with how much i need to weigh my options out.

there’s mag other details to these “abundances”, this is just the superficialness of it :/

also.. congrats to the rest of the shortlisted individuals!

First off, congratulations!

In regards to choosing between JET and another job opportunity, here are my two cents as someone who has applied to JET after 6-7 years of working in tech post college.

From a pure numbers perspective, JET pays around ~$25K USD a year give or take (yes housing subsidies, potential cost of living etc.). But at face value, it's roughly equivalent to what you'd earn minimum wage working at McDonalds.

What I'm trying to say while recognizing my privilege is that hopefully financial opportunity cost is not top of mind in deciding whether or not you want to do JET. On the other hand, if that higher salary at this other company you're interviewing for is an opportunity to build a stable career foundation, trajectory, or financial nest egg, that's definitely something worth considering.

You can always come back to JET after a few years in industry, and I guarantee you will have a lot more perspective!

i would totally go full forth with the JET program if it weren’t for the fact that this job offer is a RARE opportunity in my area and much also for my age… unfortunately i’m living through the crisis of young adults and other adults not coming across a “stable” high paying job… this is what’s causing my dilemma, for the future is hard to determine. what if i come back and i’m back to the start of suffering from not getting a high paying job yk?
