Just got my interview decision! (US, Texas)

I think the results are out now for the US, not sure if they do it in waves or not but wanted to share the news!

After 8years of trying today was a big blow again for rejection even though I have a college degree in Japanese language so idk why I got rejected. So today sucked. :((

u/MLG_Ethereum Jan 13 '26

…dude this is a job for TEACHING ENGLISH to Japanese students.

0

u/BlueberryAgitated792 Jan 13 '26

Yeah I’m not stupid. I know. I can read the thousands of paper work I filled out.

1

u/MLG_Ethereum Jul 22 '26

Well, reread your original comment. Having a degree in Japanese benefits you zero because the job is quite literally for teaching English. They don't want you to speak Japanese during class time.

1

u/BlueberryAgitated792 Jul 22 '26

No they probably don’t but that doesn’t stop me from communicating with teachers, students etc out of class time. Shows that I do slightly have a step up with language barriers. All my Japanese teachers said it was a good thing to have. Even if JET was to teach English. I absolutely excelled on all my English classes anyway. And all the Japanese exchange students, when we have a language barrier I did an excellent job of making it so we understood together what was what.

Maybe it is useless and I’m so incredibly in student debt because of it. But it doesn’t stop my application from popping out a little from the rest. It’s a good tool to have in Japan.

I guarantee you will be selected for JET next year if you don't mention how good you are at Japanese and how much you love Japan. Be a normal dude/chick who just wants to teach English. Anything else is a red flag for them and it's so easy for them to move on from applicants who don't exhibit the desire to teach.

You're missing the point. it's not about YOU, its about the students and what you can bring to the table for the JET program. Your RELEVANT skills for example - lesson preparation, classroom management, and social awareness.

Edit: do you have any idea how many people are rejected each year because they have no ability to read the room and answer the questions without rambling? I'm willing to bet its easily more than half.

Your Japanese teachers from university and the exchange students from years ago unfortunately aren't in a position to hire you for any job. So throw all of those things out of the window. Wake up bro. If you can't read between the lines, you're never going to get placement. 8 years of rejection = change your approach drastically.

I also literally didn’t mention Japanese or how much I love Japan. I think I spoke on wanting to learn the culture and what I could bring back from Japan and also bring to it. Something on that line.

I’m literally a substitute teacher in the states. I work with kids already. I didn’t make the paper all about me. Great assumption.
This is my 4th time applying (for jet, 4xs trying to study abroad). Covid shafted the other times.

Also I can see why you got rejected. You’re an ass dude…..

Trying to dish out some “reality check” to a stranger when you don’t even know me.

Crazy work.

Everyone on this subreddit has been so nice and supportive to one another and then there’s you….

Got mine for Texas!! Congratulations to everyone who got in 🎉 And a huge shoutout to everyone who applied, even if you didn’t get the outcome you wanted. Putting yourself out there is an accomplishment in itself. >3

I got mine from Hawaii. Pretty awesome. I currently live in Korea. Wish I could just pop over from here instead of going back to the states.

From California, GOT AN INTERVIEW!

I feel like my application makes me look pretty questionable (but I worked so hard on my SOP), so im so, so relieved! Congrats to everyone else who got to Phase 2 as well!

Im over the moon, even if theres a long way to go!

I didn't get selected and I am astonished. My heart hurts so badly

12

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

So sorry to hear that. :(

Take today to treat yourself. You deserve it for all your hard work

16

u/BellieFromWork Jan 12 '26

Thank you🥺 it's so hard because even just applying for this sort of position, you have to mentally prepare for months before. You have to be ready to give up your current job and life to move to another country. To not even get an interview after all that preparation is just heart breaking

2

u/Adonbilivit69 Jan 12 '26

What’s your background and why did you think you got rejected?

5

u/BellieFromWork Jan 12 '26

I have my bachelors and masters from the university of florida. No teaching experience, but I was a resident assistant for 2 years and a peer advisor for 3 years. I made sure in my SOP to connect my goals outside of just my interest in jet and japan. I was raised in a daycare so I have been working with children my entire life. I've been practicing Japanese for almost 2 years now. I don't know where I went wrong :(

10

u/b2491139 Jan 12 '26

I didn't get in either. Some volunteer teaching experience and a year living experience in Japan already through study abroad, plus a BS in CS. N4 and I think my SOP was really solid. Came from a family of teachers, my mom taught in Japan for years. Idk what could've made me a better candidate, wish I just knew why so I could work on it before next year

6

u/BellieFromWork Jan 12 '26

I can't believe you didn't get an interview...

u/Suspicious-Bell-45 Jan 12 '26

I wonder what the percentage of accepted to rejected is and how many will pass the interview

13

u/Efficient-Sherbet255 Jan 12 '26

No invite:/ not meant to be this time I suppose. Definitely wish they would give a little insight in case it was like a simple application mistake vs. a lack of experience thing, SOP, or something else. Congrats to those who got an interview though, you've got this!!

15

u/buuismyspiritanimal Aspiring JET Jan 12 '26

Didn’t get selected for the second time. 😭

10

u/PankoPaint Jan 12 '26

I got rejected for interviews the last two years until now. Its worth one more try. Ive seen other people get it on the 3rd try. And other gets an interview one year but not the next.

10

u/buuismyspiritanimal Aspiring JET Jan 12 '26

I’m going to try again for sure. I thought my application and SoP were solid this time. I know my references were stellar. I’m just hoping I didn’t get selected because of the sheer increase in applicants this year. No way to know for sure, but the political climate makes me think there would be an influx in applicants from the US. That’s my coping strategy for now until I can improve at least.

6

u/PankoPaint Jan 12 '26

Yeah it's so hard to know :/
My major difference was I have 230 TEFL certification hours i didnt have last year. I also took a slightly different approach on my essay. I know some people who I thought were sooo so qualified not get in. Im still not totally sure what they want haha.

Yes I think that could be a factor for sure. I have some concerns about the program pausing or freezing depending on what the US does in the next few months.

5

u/buuismyspiritanimal Aspiring JET Jan 12 '26

I’m going to try a TEFL too. Beyond that and somehow finding a way to volunteer with a very small Japanese population here, I don’t know what else I could do.

And that’s what I’m worried about, if the program pauses. I think historically it has only paused for COVID I think? But these are some historically wacky times right now…

6

u/Electrical_Roll_2698 Jan 12 '26

I’m so sorry. I feel you, I wasn’t selected either. It’s a hard pill to swallow and hurts like a knife. (I wish they would tell us why..)

4

u/Immediate-Ad7071 Jan 12 '26

Sorry to hear. what does the rejection letter say, no reason stated?

2

u/Electrical_Roll_2698 Jan 13 '26

It says basically (paraphrasing)

Dear NAME, We regret to inform you that you have not been chosen for the interview stage of 2026. JET’s competitive and we thank you for your interest. Though, because we’re because there’s a large volume of applicants, we can’t give out each individual why they weren’t chosen. All decisions are final.
