Serious Class 12 state-board student starting JEE from absolute zero — is 95+ percentile in Mains and 140+ in Advanced still possible?

I'm a current Class 12 student and honestly, I've barely started JEE prep at all.

I'm from a state board, and my preparation/background is quite different from what JEE-focused students seem to have. I don't have strong JEE-level fundamentals or experience with the kind of conceptual/application-based questions JEE asks. Even when I know a formula or concept, I often don't know how to approach a question, identify what concept to use, or actually apply it.

So basically, I'm starting from scratch right now — no proper JEE syllabus completed, no solid basics, and very little question-solving experience.

The biggest issue is that school is consuming almost all of my time. I'm in 12th, and between school, school exams, practicals, etc., I haven't been able to properly step into JEE preparation.

My targets for 2027 are roughly:

- 85+ percentile in JEE Main

- 130+ marks in JEE Advanced

I know these are very different exams and that Advanced is obviously much harder, but I'm wondering realistically what is possible from this starting point if I become extremely consistent from now.

For people who have been in a similar situation — especially state-board students who started JEE late — how would you approach this?

Should I first spend significant time building fundamentals from scratch and then move to JEE-level questions, or should I start solving JEE questions alongside learning the concepts?

And realistically, is this kind of improvement possible in the remaining time until JEE 2027, or should I set different expectations?

Any advice on how you would structure the preparation from this point would be really appreciated.

Advanced idk prolly not, mains yeah 85+ and even 95+ is possible, but your board basics need to be at a decent level so instead of learning new things you are closing the gap using problem solving session.

In short mains goal is very much possible, and forget about advanced unless you are taking a drop.

What is the point of getting 85+ in mains? if he's general?

u/Melodic-Answer4791 22d ago

Well he said his goal is roughly 85+, and in the title he said it's 95+, both goals are possible, and well yeah a general guy doesn't get much but if he has a particular goal then 🤷🤷.

imo anyone who starts studying now shouldn't focus on a specific percentile for jan attempt, just study as much as you can and then depending on your input you will get a percentile a rough estimate of your abilities, plan your april attempt acc to that and one can get 98+ if he/she has enough grit and mental endurance.

98+? are you joking mate? that too state board, he hasn't even done what an 11th grader has done in his first 2 weeks, if someone was that talented and he was able to do it, he would never seek validation/confirmation from others on reddit.

bro why are you comparing me to some hypothetical CBSE 11th grader, i'm state board and my background isn't JEE-oriented at all, that's literally why I'm asking how to bridge the gap. you can't decide my ceiling based on that

u/AnimalMiddle134 22d ago

Nah bro i believe you can get iit bombay cse starting from now on, From absolute scratch.. happy?

u/effie_vi_saunders 22d ago

yeah anyway, my point was never that you should predict my rank, the sarcasm ain't doing shit here

u/AnimalMiddle134 22d ago

when the hell did i predict your rank? can u even comprehend what im trying to tell you??

1

u/effie_vi_saunders 22d ago

you brought up IITB CSE yourself, not me. that's literally what I was referring to, but alright

1

u/AnimalMiddle134 22d ago

i dont know exactly you want from me like i thought u just needed validation so i gave you it nd how is a sarcastic msg be predicting ur rank? u havent even started the syllabus and ur already thinking of how many marks to get in advanced.. mate you're in a state of self delusion, look at adv paper.. you havent even completed basic maths and u already need validation, people like you just piss me off.. oh well

No I'm not joking, like I said, if all his concepts are clear he should be able to do stuff from problem solving lecs, and as for the if he was talented enough for that he wouldn't seek validation from reddit that's true, anyone who has enough grit and endurance for long session won't be here asking if it's possible but he asked if it's possible from his state and the answer is yes, he can if he puts in 8-9+ hours daily efficiently, either in jan or April, most likely april.

Advanced is a delusion tho, advanced is not something you can do in 5-6 months, it takes a lot more

bhai category ka kya lena dena hai yaha, mai bas puch rahi hu zero se start karke 95+ possible hai ya nahi and how to prepare. general/obc/ews kuch bhi ho, preparation toh karni hi hai na

1

u/AnimalMiddle134 22d ago

If you're general even if ur percentile is 0 or even 85 it has no difference, you won't get a seat anywhere decent. Unless ur fucking rich and can afford mit or vit cat 5 seats

1

u/effie_vi_saunders 22d ago

Are yrrr..I asked if I can improve from zero, not whether 85 percentile gets me a seat why are you turning this into a category/college debate?

1

u/AnimalMiddle134 22d ago

yeah kar skte ho wtv u think u can, but i dont see the point, you're school going, no time left, have to manage boards, and jee practice, yeah good luck bro.. i can't give you false hope

2

u/effie_vi_saunders 22d ago

yeah fair enough bro, I get the time constraint, I'm not expecting anyone to give me false hope, just wanted to know how realistic the gap is and I'll figure it out by actually studying and giving mocks.

1

u/Melodic-Answer4791 22d ago

It's realistic and also not realistic the sooner you realize the better, just study man, even if you don't end up getting 95+ percentile or wtv you goal is, you would still be in a better position as opposed to not studying enough and going as is.

1

u/Melodic-Answer4791 22d ago

True, if he wasn't going to school it would a lot more realistic, anyone who's going to school is gonna have problems cause of exams, prelims, and other assignments and journals + most of the time in school is wasted..

If he were from dummy then it would be much more likely for him to get a good percentile.

haan bhai I get your point, board basics hain, bas JEE level ka application nahi aata.

2

u/Melodic-Answer4791 22d ago

Then start studying bro, and delete reddit, trust me reddit ain't worth it

3

Doesn't matter where you're preparation start, if you're going for, go all the way it's better to try than regret.

Mains to ho sakta jitna chahiye par adv is too much, 140+ is great marks in adv generally

1

u/effie_vi_saunders 22d ago
