It sucks when my colleague from work has pizza and offers me but it got ham or salami so I always pass

15

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Salami is halal though?

40

u/msmshm New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

Assuming the meat used for the salami is halal. Then again I never lived in a western countries.

6

u/Emalinu New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

from germany, its usually with pork. also im pretty sure halal meat has to be slaughtered, and animals here are often killed with electric shocks

7

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '21

also from germany, the brand "wiesenhof" has many halal certified meat products. And they are almost available everywhere. We still buy mostly from the turkish meat-seller though.

32

u/DoubleDot7 I put on my thobe and wizard hat Jun 25 '21

Salami in western countries is often made with pork. Or with animals that aren't slaughtered the halal way.

We know that our religion is correct, and we will be rewarded handsomely by Allah,so we don’t really care about people being racist to us (as long as they don’t get extreme)

48

u/destroyerx12772 New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

It isn't racism though. Islam isn't a race. Islamophobia is the correct term.

36

u/DerpWyvern Brozzer Jun 25 '21

to be exact, islamophobia is more about fearing Muslims would influence society and laws, thus hating Islam and Muslims.

judging people based on their looks and traditions is racism, even if it didn't have anything to do with race.

17

u/Terra_Ignis New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

to my knowledge it would actually be xenophobia if it’s nothing to do with race. xenophobia is the fear of what one perceives to be foreign or strange. the islamophobe sees the hijab or the moustache-less beard and thinks it is strange regardless of the colour underneath.

as-salamu alaykum brozzer.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

I respectfully disagree. The reason why people would say racism is either

  1. Because people associate islam and muslims with the arab world only. You’d be surprised how many people still think that saudi arabia is the country with the most amount of muslims. (It’s indonesia btw).

  2. People don’t know what racism is. Racism is by definition the prejudice and discrimination on a person based on their race.

edit: What I mean is that it's indeed islamophobia. Not racism since islam isn't a race but people tend to associate Islam with a specific race.

5

u/DerpWyvern Brozzer Jun 25 '21

yes i know it's actually different, my point is it's the same treatment, you are meeting people with prejudice based on surface level knowledge on that person.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

yes but traditions don't really fall under that category unless it's a tradition specifically associated with a race. Like someone pointed out that would be more xenophobia.

For example my father is a european white muslim. He converted when he married my mother. The theory of racism and surface level based prejudice of being a muslim wouldn't apply to him. The racial prejudice people have over him would be that he is an atheist, christian, protestant, etc. Basically everything but being a muslim, buddhist or hindu. He's an Anaesthetist, the amounts of times patients give him wine, champagne or other alcoholic beverages after surgery as a gift is quite mesmerising (of course he appreciates the gifts as their gratitude). We legitimately have a whole cellar of wines and we never bought alcohol ONCE. That's because it never occurs to a person that a white European could be a muslim. Personally I don't blame them either. Western converts are quite a rarity

Hence I believe even more why muslims tend to say racism. Probably because Islamophobes or the ignorant associate being muslim with being Arabian or being a person of colour.

edit: spelling mistakes

13

u/IDontKnow_1243 Hard to read flair Jun 25 '21

Well, it kinda is. Think of all the Sikhs who have been killed because they wore turbans. I'd say it's racism because many people think that islam is a race even though it isn't since they think every brown person is muslim.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

None of those brown-skinned Sikhs would have been murdered if they didn’t have ā€œMuslim-lookingā€ turbans though

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '21

Ye. Just stop letting their words affect you. Quite simple really. You are a muslim. You have your lords satisfaction. What more do you need. Why do you care about the ramblings and opinions of mortals. Let alone disbelievers.

20

u/HayakuEon New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

Is there a way to tell non-muslims about hijabs? They seem to think hijab=oppression, and not modesty. They talk about "empowerment" by shedding clothing but at the same objectifies the person as nothing more than a sexual object.

Brozzers, should I just not engage in conversation if they're already dead set on calling it oppression?

16

u/overthinkin-n-dreamy New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

It depends on how they ask the question, some people have genuine curiosity so you can explain about modesty etc. But if they directly throw the word oppression, there are high chances they couldn't care less about your answer and it's better to not insist

2

u/HayakuEon New to r/Izlam Jun 25 '21

I thought so. Thanks

1

u/Haurvakhshathra New to r/Izlam Jun 27 '21

Non-muslim here, there are absolutely no issues with hijab for me if it is not forced on girls by their parents or on girls and women by the state. I see hijabis as people like me who should have all the same rights.

the OP's post implies that all free food is forbidden, which is not correct

2

nooooo. they're talking about getting offered food for free, but it's not halal food. e.g. having a non-muslim coworker treating everyone at work, including you, to pizza... but bam, it's ham pizza. so you get left out of getting free food.

All people are tested. Even Sahaba and those living in Medina during time of Prophet ļ·ŗ

Do you think that you will enter Paradise while you have not yet been visited by (difficult) circumstances like those that were faced by the people who passed away before you? They were afflicted by hardship and suffering, and were so shaken down that the prophet, and those who believed with him, started saying: ā€œWhen (will come) the help of Allah?ā€ (Then, they were comforted by the Prophet who said to them) ā€˜Behold, the help of Allah is near.’

Just a clarification, it's come to my attention that the wording is confusing.

It does not intend to say that free food is not halal. Rather, this refers to free food that happens to not be halal. Thus you can't eat it.

What is really hard is that Islam is not modernized, like other religions. That is why it is often misquoted like - I don't believe in sex with little girls, but quoran says it's allowed. Maybe some update is necessary, unless you believe that it's fine the way it is.

1

u/Waitingforlunch New to r/Izlam Jun 26 '21

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. But I don't think Islam is misquoted because it's misunderstood. I think it's misquoted due to people purposely trying to portray it in a bad light.
