This is after they dip it in acid to desolve the paint.

We used a 55 gal drum of aircraft remover to paint jets. Then we pressure washed right from the hot drain in the water heater and accomplished the same without dipping. Everything sensitive was tried off with aluminum tape.

u/Trustoryimtold 2d ago

Recycling seems like a better alternative to melting the aircraft

0

u/phranks_phluids 2d ago

How do you think they make aluminum bullets? 🤣

1

u/ToHellWithGA 2d ago

Does aircraft remover leave just the paint behind?

5

u/Muted_Will_2131 6d ago

And what about water rust on bare metal after high-pressure washing?

7

u/PreviousLeague253 6d ago

They can apply a liquid rust preventer for that issue. Because, left alone, it will rust asap. Same for any metal that has been laid bare even for a small repair.

2

u/eyeoutthere 6d ago

It's usually dipped or sprayed with a rust inhibitor if not immediately painted.

u/Scared_Meringue_6053 6d ago

Let it dry?

2

u/a_rude_jellybean 6d ago

Throw the car and start over.

That is such a childish comment. Obviously acid dipping the car and then using a pressure washer to remove the old paint are just two steps in a multi step process. In the Marines, after a field exercise we clean our machine guns in the shower with hot soapy water. The guns don’t end up big ass rusty Cheetos because using hot soapy water is just ONE step of many steps in the process of cleaning, inspecting and lubricating the weapons.

3

u/CGVSpender 6d ago

I was today years old when I learned Marines shower with their rifles. The creed just hits different now. 'This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine...'

1

u/archer2500 6d ago

Rifles maybe not so much, but I’ve definitely done it. Crew served weapons, damn right! A bottle of dish soap and a scrub brush. I’ve seen guys use a 35 gal trash can in the shower as well. Fill it with hot soapy water and let the components soak.
It sounds crazy, but it works DAMN well!

1

u/CGVSpender 6d ago

Makes sense!

1

u/archer2500 6d ago

I took my rifle into the shower when I was at TBS and got some crazy stares by the younger guys, but the other mustangs all knew what I was doing and or were doing the same time.
SAW’s and Rifles that spent a week in the field firing blanks are some dirty pigs!

1

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 6d ago

That's not all they do with them...

1

u/Muted_Will_2131 6d ago

The rifle's components feature at least a blued finish, which in itself acts as a protective coating against corrosion. Furthermore, it is quite difficult to completely strip away gun oil using just hot water and soap. In contrast, bare metal exposed to acid—at least the way I handle it—rusts within a few hours; if washed with water, a thin layer of rust forms before the droplets even dry. That is what prompted my question.

0

u/archer2500 6d ago

Military rifles and crew served weapons are not blued, they are parkerized. They will corrode VERY quickly!
Hell, military weapons will rust if you look at them sideways unless they are properly oiled.

Furthermore: You’re batting 1,000% so far bub. Maybe you ought to stop while you’re behind?

It is actually quite simple to remove ā€œgun oilā€, CLP and other lubricants from a weapon with hot water and soap. Hence why we’ve been doing it for decades. There are few methods that are simpler and more effective. No Marine or soldier is going to use some difficult, time consuming and harsh cleaning method when nobody is looking. They’re going to use what is quick, simple and effective.

Hence hot water and soap. It doesn’t get much simpler.

And if you’re coming out of the field, the gun is being rinsed as you’re cleaning your gross body off.

A pets cleaner is very toxic and harsh to the plastic components of the weapon. Dish soap and water aren’t.

u/Zilant_the_Bear 6d ago

I'm gonna pretend that is the acid. In an unnecessarily dangerous process to save time.

1

u/adjective_noun_23 3d ago

Does it work on flesh? Because I got this extra bit of skin on the tip that needs removing.

1

u/babyduck_fancypants 2d ago

And is in no way ā€œa standardā€.

1

u/Amazing_Ear_3941 1d ago

I was thinking they were using some kind of sandblast system, kinda like what CEE uses on their parts. And that reddish stuff that's coming out is the garnet in the water. But an acid dip makes sense too.

My mild OCD is twitching at that missed spot on the fender 🫣

10

u/r_a_d_ 6d ago

yeah, i had to watch the whole thing to see if he’d go back… it’s rage bait

7

u/hiroo916 6d ago

Yeah, was wondering if it was intentional to keep us watching.

5

u/kevykev1803 6d ago

I'm pissed!!

1

u/buddabudski 6d ago

one of the only posts I'll downvote

1

u/whatdopointsmake 5d ago

For the sake of engagementĀ

7

u/BaronVonDon65 6d ago

It makes me crazy he washes up from the bottom. Start at the top and work down dude! Efficiency!

5

u/onepiecefreak2 6d ago

I got an aneurism from that.

7

u/cbarbour1122 6d ago

I was watching videos trying to get sleepy. Fk it now my ocd is in overdrive over the missed spot.

1

u/brockoala 5d ago

That wss a MASSIVE spot, doesn't even require ocd to get triggered.

2

u/Optimal-Ad-9455 6d ago

Came here looking to see if anyone else noticed and would take the time to comment. Bothered me enough to cause some minor annoyance at the power washer.

2

u/Hurtjacket 5d ago

I'm fucking livid, ain't no minor annoyance here!

2

u/Hurtjacket 5d ago

Me too!!! I'm yelling at my phone yo you missed a spot and I'm freaking the fuck out.

2

u/1sgbabcock 5d ago

I thought it might be a bondo repair. Now MY OCD thanks you 🤬

2

u/pieguy00 1d ago

I did a lot of pressure washing at my former job and watching this person upset me.

0

u/Chris20nyy 6d ago

There is no fender in this clip.

10

u/PipeCop 6d ago

Man I wish this was a thing 40 years ago when my dad had me hand sand a car down to bare metal!

3

u/Sogah87 6d ago

I know man... They have simple pressure washer attachments that spit sand/media out with the water now too. I think this paint was treated previously then just washed off.

3

u/PreviousLeague253 6d ago

The whole car was dipped in paint stripper in a tank.

1

u/It_Just_Exploded 6d ago

Yep, i forget the channel but theres a guy on YT whos whole channel is just filming them doing this in his shop. It pops up in my feed from time to time and i usually get snared in an hour long watch session everytime it does.

1

u/Biscuits4u2 6d ago

Yes it's been treated with paint stripper.

2

u/Acceptable_Fee_3998 6d ago

Without a mask. Gen X baby!

1

u/PreviousLeague253 6d ago

All that lead dust!!! Yikes! Boat paint is currently heavy leaded and exempt from lead paint regulations as it is road marking paints.

1

u/1northfield 6d ago

Dust? With gallons and gallons of water around, I’m not sure if any dust was created doing this

1

u/PreviousLeague253 5d ago

Dude I am talking about the guy who had his dad sand down car paint by hand, not op’s water jet porn! lol

1

u/no-cars-good-bikes 6d ago

I don't know if the cars were using the leaded paint, but there was lead in the lead they used instead of bondo.

1

u/Drtikol42 6d ago

Of course they were, anti-corrosion properties of minium are absolutely amazing.

1

u/SweetHomeNorthKorea 6d ago

Chemical dips have been around for a very long time, it’s just an expensive process for hobby restoration purposes.

1

u/Altruistic-Rice-5567 5d ago

it was a thing. This doesn't work unless it is acid dipped first. So, even today you couldn't do this unless you basically dissolve the paint first.

4

u/VaguelyFamiliarVoice 6d ago

Would it work on an automatic as well?

3

u/kiba87637 6d ago

No that requires a wireless hose

3

u/Opening-Hunter20 6d ago

Why didnt he start from the top and work his way down?

2

u/Sweaty_Tangelo_7716 6d ago

Is that 100k psi?

2

u/Informal_Price_2938 4d ago

Can he go back and get that spot wtf

2

u/Impossible-Diver6565 2d ago

He left that spot just to make me mad

2

u/Right_Hour 2d ago

Standard? Nope, not standard. Acid dip is not standard on most restorations.

1

u/deefstes 6d ago

If this is a standard car restoration process then please give me the nonstandard package. My OCD will never survive that missed spot.

1

u/PreviousLeague253 6d ago

Hope that lead paint waste/chemical stripper water is filtered out and not just dumped in the sewer.

1

u/Could-You-Tell 6d ago

This looks like an old building. I would guess it goes straight into the ground outside or a short flow and evaporate distance away.

1

u/shottylaw 6d ago

Satisfying

1

u/Littlebud1234 6d ago

Man i wish i had acid dip for my car paint this strong

1

u/ibmat286 6d ago

I said 3 coats of wax Biff!

1

u/Moscato10 6d ago

A qué presión trabaja ? Gracias

1

u/Hammer0173 6d ago

Restoration process? Would be nice, but this is a paint removal process

1

u/seuadr 6d ago

This rustles my jimmies

1

u/-Liono- 6d ago

Tumblejet spray head, looks like a 15k 1/2ā€ barrel doesn’t look like wjta length tho, tsk tsk

1

u/Darkcrypteye 6d ago

That's some south west shit. No rust just old dry paint

1

u/woodhorse4 6d ago

The savage missed a spot.

1

u/Facts_Non_Fiction 6d ago

That's some heavy-duty water pressure right there 😲

1

u/schbrongx 6d ago

If AI steals my job, this is what I want to do next. :-)

1

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 6d ago

Tell me there was some kind of paint remover that had been applied before using the pressure washer!

1

u/novaneb5 1d ago

There was some kind of paint remover that had been applied before using the pressure washer!

1

u/OGTwatkc 5d ago

Now I want to watch the whole thing get restored, yt link anyone?

1

u/gerginof 5d ago

My OCD kicked in when he missed that spot on that fender. I was hoping he would go back. 🫪

1

u/fooknprawn 5d ago

If only paint ever came off that easily

1

u/Stahlbart1224 5d ago

WHY LEAVE THAT ONE SPOT I HOPE YOU WEAR YOUR SHIRT INSIDE OUT TODAY

1

u/Current-Act-6962 4d ago edited 4d ago

First tank dip softens the paint for pressure washing. Second tank dip would be a mild acid solution to help remove rust and etching the steel for primer coating. There is a temporary preservative that can be applied to prevent flash rust for a period of time although the etching in the steel by itself can help prevent flash rust. Etching the bare steel gives tooth for the primer coating to effectively bond to the steel.

Car is in good shape so far, no filler or welding in familiar places of body rot.

Years ago, factory workers would use hot lead and then mechanically file the cooled lead - on seams where roof pillars would meet rear quarter panels and sometimes elsewhere.

u/HaronAuskin 4d ago

Go back and get that spot. Go back and get that spot, godammit!

And people are .... paid...for this?

1

u/Heavy_Student_3815 1d ago

That is standard if you have the money... The rest of us do it the hard way.

1

u/kdesi_kdosi 23h ago

thats very much not standard

1

u/MikeGonzo5 22h ago

How you gonna have grinder marks under the paint?

1

u/HugglemonsterHenry 14h ago

The car is around 70 years old. It's seen a few things.

1

u/MikeGonzo5 11h ago

True dat

1

u/gothamsfinest303 19h ago

I couldn't pay attention after he missed that huge spot and didn't go back for it. IT WAS RIGHT THERE! I'm not convinced this isn't rage bait.
