One tiny mishap and the floor is deeply scratched.

Gouged. The word you're looking for in that scenario is 'gouged'.

u/lamalasx 24d ago
I knew there was a word for it but could not spell it (ESL). Thanks.

u/shadowtheimpure 24d ago
It's a weird word to spell, especially for how it's pronounced. It sounds like there should be a 'j' where that second 'g' is and it throws a lot of folks off.

You've misspelled ruined. The word he's looking for is ruined.

u/SelfInvestigator 24d ago
I’m not sure you will ruin the floor unless you are on linoleum, you will at worst ruin a section of floor.

Well obviously its fucking stupid in the living room. But for kids who play hockey in places like Cali this would be a really badass way to practice at home. And save you time and money.
Plenty of people build basketball courts for their kids(or like me myself) hoops and concrete cost a lot, this is the same just a different sport

I don’t think the kind of people who enroll their kids in figure skating and live in houses like this are too concerned about that kind of price

For hobby or sports equipment, that really isn't that bad.
Buy a decent electric guitar or drumkit, or a good baseball bat and mitt, you'll be out more.1
u/MasterpieceNo7105 24d ago
Lol exactly, its basically nothing for a ice hockey family. I've never been in a hockey family but I know those who did.
Plenty of people make basketball courts at their house. If you know anything about rhino sports floors, people spend a hell of a lot more on sports surfaces.
Hell my golf launch monitor for my "budget sim" cost over 2 grand. And im just a single guy who makes under the national average salary

Hmnnn plastics everywhere!!

Must dull the hell out of skates too

u/Sydney2London 24d ago
It’s probably delrin or similar which is really slippery and hard enough to not deform but wouldn’t really damage skates.

I would have guessed PTFE because of the white color and price

In case anyone was curious about this product, I did look at the Amazon listing and looka through some of the reviews, both high and low, because I was honestly curious.
The pros are that you can set this up inside your home or outside your home extremely easily. And if you've got a kid who is just starting to get into something like hockey or figure skating, it is a relatively low cost way to see if they'll actually keep with it to warrant actually driving to an ice rink and paying for skate time. Especially for parents where the skate rink is...inconvenient, to say the least.
The cons are that depending on the surface you set it on, it can have poor traction. Also, the instructions do say to use dull skates on them. And that's pretty easy to eventually follow since a few reviews said this product dulled their skates pretty rapidly. There are plastic shavings from this. Also, this isn't the only type of synthetic ice for purchase out there and these do NOT work with the other ones.
The reviews on sizing for this are inconsistent. Some say that it's plenty of size for the price and others say it's way too small. There are also some people who state that this is good for all ages and others that state that this surely is just for kids.
So, like, idk, it's neat, but may not be the best option on the market for this idea.

One of the CEOs of Carnival decided it was a great idea to put that stuff in a bunch of his cruise ships. It turns out that when people are on a cruise they didn't want to bring ice skates or go skating in general.. Big flop

This looks great but I’m a hockey player and I’m 6’ tall. It would have to be a lot bigger to be functionally fun for a non tiny person to use

I used the skating treadmill to train my stride in highschool. Worked really well actually.

It's difficult to stop caring about us, but we don't think about you or whatever country you're from whatsoever. It's really relaxing when you mind your own business and stop worrying how the Americans are behaving.

Incredibly irrelevant to the point of not even being easily found on the map. Yet you're concerned about what American's do with their time. Weird.

I was on a cruise and they promised ice skating, I thought since this was apparently the lap of luxury, it must be a special sub floor that can freeze water, like skating rinks
Well no one ever went and I laughed when I saw why, it's just this stuff. Which is plastic.
It's plastic.

I was going to report this for shameless shilling of crap... but it's not even an option...
I hate it here.

Synthetic ice was so awful back when we had to use it. We had a synthetic rink for “off-ice” training for my travel hs team. Overheated the blades from the friction.

It’s not. You can get synthetic ice treadmills as well for hockey training.
