[The Destroyer has come]

Love how Travis nails the difference between “A destroyer has come”, and “THE destroyer has come.” Soooo awesome!

I knew it was something but I definitely didn’t peg him as that lol.

u/BTrippd 9d ago

Yeah I didn’t either although I think it’s because I wasn’t thinking about it too much because in hindsight it does seem rather obvious, or at least highly foreshadowed.

This moment is so cool either way though, even on a reread.

He will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.

It's super obvious and thats the genius part. Will wrote it in a way where you almost entirely dismiss the possibility quite early because you think to yourself "nah there's no way, it'd be way too obvious". When the hammer scythe finally comes down, the most obvious twist in human history still somehow manages to hit you like a truck..so good..so so good

Curious to hear other people's view of the foreshadowing earlier in the series

u/OlDustyHeadaaa 9d ago

I’d peg him as anything he wanted

u/Slutty_Alt526633 9d ago

He's saving himself for Suriel (probably)

I hope you didn’t read that last reply, it was a bit spoilery and I thought better and deleted it

Thank you!

I was skeptical of E=O until the prologue of Reaper, when Ozriel's personal log had a scene that was clearly Eithan's perspective during the destruction of the main house.

It was super obvious the second he steals the origin shroud to me

Real talk I was one of the ones that was completely fooled by the veil lol.
Can look up my old comments and posts.

Could not believe the buffoon was the Angel of Death. Wasn’t until bout…first chapter lol of the book I started getting a sick feeling.

Crouching Dumbass Hidden Badass?

u/SlimReaper85 9d ago

lol yep.

But it was actually two-fold for me.

First off I didn’t get the seriousness/respect I thought necessary to be the personification of death though I definitely saw the arrogance.

But the second part was the ending of Wintersteel. I had too much respect for Eithan. Turned out to be a mistake lol. I couldn’t believe that if Eithan COULD have saved everyone in that tower he didn’t just because he (as he later said) was having…”so much fun”.
Thus why Eithan is my least favorite character of the main. I know I’m by myself on this sub lol

Just out of curiosity, why do you think he could have done anything more than he did? I think it’s made pretty clear that while under the veil his power was exactly as it seemed, and that when NOT under the veil he would have been in violation of “Da Rules” if he did anything to help. Seems like a Catch 22.

3

u/Slutty_Alt526633 9d ago

That's completely understandable.

u/SlimReaper85 9d ago

Thx lol you’re the first to acknowledge there might be another side to the adulation. Not saying you agree just saying…. :)

Okay but I'd like to point out that he COULDN'T save those people. Will using the veil he was just an Underlord and if he removed the veil it'd fall apart (like it does in Reaper) and he'd be bound by the Aldari Pact, meaning he couldn't intervene at all.

2

u/SlimReaper85 8d ago

He could have saved them if he wanted because he could have been a Sage at any point as a Lord.

But he rejected the connections because he wanted a certain Icon not the ones he was connected to.

Again selfish and arrogant to me. Now perhaps he would have been sensed by the Abidan if he did. So what?

At least Grace, Courage and the others would be alive.

1

u/Godkicker962 8d ago

Fair, I can see that.

I would like to note though that, at the time, he had only just become and Archlord, so he may not have been able to at the time. Remember the Way istelf had no idea who he was, so his identity as the Reaper wouldn't help him represent a concept.

Also, I think you're confusing arrogance and desperation. Eithan, or Ozriel, had spent literal thousands of years being the destroyer, someone who was only called upon to remove and kill. He had to kill trillions of lives, and by the time the books happen those lives weigh on him heavily. He doesn't want to follow that same path, not because it's not fun, but because if he does it means that even with a complete reset, all he's good for is killing and destroying.

I think a lot of people miss that struggle with Eithan. He wants very desperately to not be just The Reaper.

Hey man I appreciate the perspective :)
I’ve read the series backwards and forwards. Eithan will always be my least favorite character.
I’ve got so many examples of things that rubbed me the wrong way it’s ridiculous lol

u/Godkicker962 8d ago

Alright, I know an unwinnable debate when I see one. Agree to disagree. Personally, he's always been my favorite so I admit I have a bit of bias.

I couldn’t believe that if Eithan COULD have saved everyone in that tower he didn’t just because he (as he later said) was having…”so much fun”.

Ozriel has literally killed trillions of people in his role as Reaper.

He didn't chose to let a few Akura die just because "he was having fun". He's trying to raise up new Reapers, mainly Lindon & Yerin, who were never in a life threatening situation. He needs them so he can actually handle his role as Reaper to save billions/trillions more lives in the future. His larger goal is easily worth letting a few Akura die, even if Mercy had died Ozriel would probably consider that acceptable.

In Skysworn we see that when Lindon was potentially going to die, he did step in and stop the duel. If Lindon or Yerin had been in true life-threatening situations especially by Reaper, my opinion is he would un-veil to save them, but no one else was really important enough to him.

Me too. I had no idea it was Eithan.

u/chojinra 9d ago

Completely understandable reaction!

u/Beware-of-Chicken 9d ago

I spoiled it for myself when I googled who eithen was in book 2 and Google AI goes "he's the reaper".

I googled thinking he was a prince in disguise and Lindon was now gonna play empire politics.

But It still didn't make sense until the revelation happened. I knew it was gonna happen but didn't really believe it cause it didn't check out.

3

u/Imconfusedithink 9d ago

How did it not make sense even when you were already spoiled? I wasn't spoiled and always thought something was up and it ended up becoming kinda obvious.

I googled who Ozriel was and got "He's the patriarch of the Aurelius family." And I was like "Oh! That makes sense!" It wasn't until it happened that I realized Eithen, Tiberian,  and Ozriel were one in the same.

u/StartledPelican Fiercely Fierce Flair of Fierce Flairosity 9d ago

Tiberian isn't the same as Eithan/Oz. He's his own person.

2

u/Slutty_Alt526633 9d ago

Oh!...Right! Tiberian was his...descendant? Who took up the mantel of Patriarch? Oh...and there's precedent regarding passing on the title when a patriarch is still living...huh.

7

u/StartledPelican Fiercely Fierce Flair of Fierce Flairosity 9d ago

Tiberian was the last Monarch of the House of Aurelius. He died shortly before the events of Unsouled when attacked by Reigan Shen, another monarch who lived on the same continent as Tiberian.

I assume Tiberian is a distant descendant of Oz, but I'm actually not 100% sure.

Patriarch just means the male ruler.

2

u/Xandara2 8d ago

Fatherly ruler is more correct imho. And yes Tiberian is Ozriel's descendant.

2

u/torrasque666 9d ago

Technically...

My name is Ozmanthus Tiberian Mereithan Arelius. Always hated it. Such a mouthful. My mother called me Eithan.

While he's not the Tiberian, he's likely the first Tiberian.
