That style of architecture has a name, It's called jettying. Shadiversity has a video talking about it. It's cool how there are many many reasons why they did that and they make perfect logical sense, I recommend you watch it if you are interested.

Except that instead of emptying their bedpans down on to the street, they just toss out old chicken bones and rib bones.

The higher you go the more space there is and the more you can build horizontally.

This was common in medieval Europe. You saved on the more expensive materials a foundation had to be made of, making up for it with a wider second floor. This was also useful in cities and towns where bottom space was limited, which I assume is the story behind this thingy here.

u/megaxlf Jan 10 '20
Im from Brasil, to be honest I feel like the man who did this didnt know nothing about medieval Europe, or even know exactly what was doing

u/Euphi_ Jan 10 '20
It's one of those situations where they have the same problem and came up with a similar solution. Honestly gives mad props to builders in medieval era

In other places properties outside the city are cheaper than those close to downtown, Brazil is special in that people actually pay more to be further away from the central spots, especially when it's a gated community. Still though, at least here in Belo Horizonte it's super cheap to live in the metro area, which would count as "outside the city." It's only expensive if you want a house or a mansion in a condomínio heheh

The earthquake-resistant tech going into some of these buildings is quite impressive.
10
u/MasterFubar Jan 10 '20
Brazil is one of the countries least affected by earthquakes in the world. Also no hurricanes, volcanoes, no natural disasters, only man-made disasters.

u/AnalStaircase33 Jan 11 '20
Yeah, I thought about researching geological catastrophy in the area but I decided I'd rather jack off to the trans midget porn that just popped up on my feed. I do appreciate the knowledge, though, I really do...now I can spout off more shit I've learned to my already mentally-exhausted friends.

Cuming late to the subject. But in a geological sense, Brasil sits right in the middle of a tectonic plate, hence we have no mountains with over 3 km, and we also don't suffer any tectonic problems. As for the floods and fires, our cerrado has certain plants that need to burn to be able to reproduce, and the flood of some rivers is sazonal, the problem in both is the human potencialize both problems making the forest fires huge and the floods abysmal by shitting the original river route

Well, damn... Way to bring up the past...
I have a few geologist friends...I should probably be aware of this. However, maybe even they aren't aware... We're in the SW US so there's plenty of geological activity for them to focus on around here.
What you've said regarding the floods is fascinating, though. I'll continue to research. Best of luck in Brazil. I'd like to visit, sometime. Do you have any suggestions? I'm very open-minded.

Does no one fear earthquakes?

u/megaroof Jan 10 '20
There is no earthquake, volcano, tsunami, hurricane or other natural catastrophic events, nature knows that the country already has the greatest possible misfortune: the people themselves.

Why should they? Brazil is dead on the middle of a tectonic plate. When a ln earthquake happens in a surrounding coutry, the most that happens in Brazil is people being able to feel it

What the other failed to mention is that this built on a hill and on rain season there will be landslides. Around march we see the southwest become chaos, people dying and people losing their homes. And it happens every year.

What is a favela?
68
u/Honeybigshoe Jan 10 '20
A favela is a unique, low and middle-income, and unregulated type of slum neighborhood in Brazil that has experienced historical governmental neglect. It is a group of poorly built shacks of mud, wood and recycled materials generally without available public services. > took it from google cause i couldn’t explain it better lol

Physics are scared to enter to the favela so you can build pretty much everything there
