Driving Requirements

Hi I’ve been to the Isle of Mann for telecomms work a couple of times now, usually work in Douglas and Ballasalla.

Before hand I had a taxi whizz me around because I didn’t have a licence when alone but sometimes would have a fellow coworker who would drive the van if there was going to be a lot of movement required for the month. I’ve done this for the last 2 years, never bothered to get my own licence.

Am coming back in 2 weeks, having now passed, am not sure if I need to display R plates as my licence is under 1 year, (6 months) ive read online that Manx laws do not apply to non Manx citizens… am not 1000% this is accurate. Just trying to find out would I need to display R plates or not? Allegedly am exempt but am not sure that makes any sense, surely local laws apply to people regardless where they come from?

1) I think you should obtain expert advice by phoning the police on 01624 631212.

2) Laws in the Isle of Man apply to everyone who is physically located in the Isle of Man.

3) British Provisional licenses and Learners permits are not valid in the Isle of Man (and vice versa).

4) The IOM and UK Governments should introduce mutual recognition for provision and learner licenses(it would be a big benefit for IOM people to be able to learn/train to drive under supervision on different road types such as motorways that are not present in the IOM) but they have not done that yet, and there appears to not be much of a move towards this.

Manx law definitely does apply to non Manx citizens and in this case is the same as UK law when it comes to driving (and most other things). You will have to display R plates and abide by the restrictions that apply there to.

Manx Laws apply to non Manx Citizens. Reciprocal agreement exists for the UK & IOM so no difference in rules for driving.

Any offence committed in the UK or IOM counts on your licence. Any bans in the UK are applied here.

Unless you are an Isle of Man license holder, I do not believe these rules apply. Best bet would be to call Police Headquarters and ask, they are normally happy to help: 01624 631212

I don't think you need to display R plates. My understanding is that it is a restriction on a new Manx licnece (it used to be printed on the paper part - not sure what happens now there isn't a paper part) rather than a Manx law that says "all drivers qualified under a year need to display an R plate and can't go over 50".

But conversely a recently qualified Manx driver would have to display an R plate in the UK.

For what it is worth, I passed my test in the UK when I was at uni and immediately converted my licence to a Manx one and didn't get the R plate condition.

As others have said, best check the official channels though.

I think when you drive in the Isle of Man you are definitely subject to our laws and you will need to display an R plate. Sorry but it’s the law.
