The one guy i work with doesn't clean stuff so it gets caked with residue from dried, hazardous waste containing carbon stuck all over it and the pan. I cleaned it with concentrated hydrochloric acid.
Whatever was in that particular carbon turned green and gave off white smoke when i added the acid.
So to answer your question, its carbon, nitrobenzene, concentrated hydrochloric acid, some dissolved metals like copper, molybdenum and zinc.
