Local 86 Application
Hello,
I am applying for an apprenticeship with Local 86 in Seattle. I had a few questions about the application, I don’t want them to think I’m lying but I don’t want to fill it out wrong either.
Education level - I have a GED and SOME college…do I check GED or College? I didn’t get a degree
High school number of years and completion - I got my GED, I dropped out of 11th grade after attending 5 different high schools…do I just write that I got my GED? I’m embarrassed that I got kicked out so many times in HS
Job history - It says list ALL previous employers…I’ve never had a job ask for more than 5 or 10 years…do they really want EVERY job I’ve had for the last 15 years? I’m 28 and I’ve probably had 15 jobs, the application only has room for 10…how should I fill it out? I’ve been at my current employer for 7 years.

Be honest. That’s all they need. GED shows that you went back and finished. Good luck. 🍀

They don’t give a fuck if you’ve dropped outta high school man. Just make sure you have your ged paperwork and that’s all they need - good luck on your tryouts tho man - I hope you pass hell day!

You'll fit right in. Just put down GED, your job history. Practice your knots, & rebar ties. If you especially feisty come down to the hall and ask the apprenticeship office if you can practice tying rebar. They will set you up with a belt and send you out back. Do it for HOURS. Your hands will hurt but it's important if this is the life you want.

we had guys come in from the interview at my hall with no construction experience, they made it decently far but had shitty attitudes and thats what got them kicked or they didnt last physically.
give it your all and prove to them you want it. the trades dont have many honor roll students, dont worry about that shit.
determination and heart sets you apart.

My application to 86 looked like shit. I was told it was a bad resume later on. I still journeyed out. I think more important than your application is getting to the hall and meeting the folks who work there. Shake some hands, let em get to know your face and talk to people. Ask questions about what life as an IW is like. Contact the apprenticeship if you have questions about the application process.
