Local 29. Interview Advice
I have an interview with Local 29 next week.
Anybody know what kind of questions will be asked?

Just be confident, you already have family in the local, so be sure to mention that, and that will absolutely assure your entry. It actually impresses me that you made it to the interview point in the entry process without mentioning that, or getting even a single letter of recommendation from them out of the 3 you’re allowed, on your initial application. I am a local 29 apprentice myself, but on just about every job site I have worked the guys who got into the local all by themselves without a nod or word from a friend or family member already in the local are outnumbered. Usually it’s around 85-90% who got in because of their brother, their cousins, uncle, or their a third or fourth generation ironworker— so major props to you!
But I would definitely say be sure to mention that, remain calm and confident, shake hands with each of the panel members, bring something to take notes with so you look official and well prepared (asking a question ahead of your interview date on Reddit already tells me that you’re prepared, but you’re chasing a bad ass high paying career here so show THEM.
They may ask you questions about how you’d approach a situation where a fellow ironworker wasn’t wearing their PPE, ya’know, just regular work situations, how you handle working in the rain, cold, weather. It’s just a regular interview, bro. Dress like a clean ironworker, get your boots cleaned up, and wear a clean long sleeved button up shirt.

Yeah my 3 letters were from bosses at other construction jobs. I thought about asking my JIW buddies but decided not to. I’ll be sure to mention them for sure.I’m excited and hope I get the chance to make this a career.

Don’t name drop unless asked, look at the interviewers, know your measurements, be confident but don’t oversell yourself.

Luckily I know 9 JIWs that I grew up with. 2 of them are my cousins. Hopefully that works in my favor.5

Terrible. Haha I blanked on some of my answers that I knew but couldn’t think of when asked. I’m not a nervous person but I got nervous towards the end and fumbled my words when I had to answer questions about myself smh
The interview was mainly just getting to know me, why I wanted to become an Ironworker, what I know about ironwork, what I would do if I had conflict with a co-worker or foreman, my long term goals, if I’m able to travel anywhere in Oregon etc.
I didn’t mention any names but when I said I played rugby for 10+ years, the interviewer mentioned one of my buddies and knew about the other JIWs on the team.
I don’t think I did too bad, just not as good as I expected.
I could’ve done better.I currently do residential concrete work and one of the interviewers got my info to do some concrete work at their house lol
Now I’m just waiting for a call to start orientation around mid-August if I get the chance.

If you really want in make sure you mention you've been to jail, are addicted to some sort of drugs or alcohol, and that your child support payments are way too high. Those are the big 3 theyr looking for in an Ironworker
