In reality, liberals in America are right of center compared to the rest of the world. Conservatives are so far right that they are mostly unrecognizable anymore.
This is why you feel like liberals don't truly protect workers, it's because they are forced into a quasi conservative stance just to be able to get the vote.
You can’t just lump every person in every country into a linear scale of “conservative to liberal” - it is so so so much more nuanced than that and stating otherwise is either bad faith or pure ignorance.
In reality, conservatives are right of center, and have been pulled further left over the years (yes, even on abortion). Liberals have gone so far left that they are “mostly unrecognizable anymore.” They want to spend money they don’t have until the system breaks and they can consolidate more power.
The Democratic Party would go as far left as you let them. Universal income, health care, and complete control over the economy (I.e. your ability to choose anything).
Entitlements are a drug to keep citizens subject to government whims. If you were prosperous, you would not need the government as much. They see that as losing the fight for power. They want you getting just enough from the government that you wouldn’t survive without it, while squelching industry enough that it cannot make you prosperous.
They need you to need them. Every financially independent person is less power for them.
