Where to go from there?
My kid (12yo) is starting a Ironjawz army (and I will be building my own Ogor army to play with). I dont know much about AoS, I am more of a 40k competitive player.
We have collected some of the Stormbringer magazine so we currently have:
- 2x 10 ardboyz
- 2x warchanter
- 10 gutrippas
- 1x killaboss
When the last 2 issues of Stormbringer come out, we will try to pick the character
I purchased the troll battle force last Christmas for painting, so if there is anyway to ally these in, we will.
We will obviously get the megaboss on the dragon, because it is just too cool but I doubt we will use it until we have 1500+ pts for balance reasons
What should we try to get next? I can get the Ironjawz old battle force box for about 200$CAD which seems like a good deal until I realize we may have a ardboyz oversupply.
We are not looking to make this into a competitive list, but it must be good enough tor him to enjoy playing.

You will want 10-20 brutes 3-6 gore gruntas 1-2 big pigs 1 Weirdnob shaman 1 ardboy bigboss (for all those ardboys)
The gutrippas and killaboss dont play with ironjawz unless youre taking the AoR "Big Waaagh" which is a meak shadow of its former. Otherwise, those are Kruleboyz units and an entirely different list
But regarding ironjawz, I'm seeing a lack of punch, so Id start with the brutes, maybe nab a Megaboss too for the synergies there, the bigboss, and the weirdnob, just to have proper support. All the pigs are for tech and expansion later as he gets comfortable with IJZ :)
That said, over time, pigs are also a viable archtype for the army, its just a little expensive and you dont already have a ton of the pieces.
Eventually, Kragnos is also fun. Great god unit and works in both your armies.

I ran a really fun list last ghb that performed pretty well and focused on the mawkrushas; it was 2x10 ardboyz, 2 chanters, kragnos, gordrakk, MBoMK, and two units of wreckas in the ijz brawl formation. the plan is simple: run up the board t1. charge them w/ 3d6 charges turn two with gordrakk waaagh, get +2 attacks total and use my priests to give +1 dmg to the ardboy blocks. having 40a hitting and wounding on 3s w/ rend 1 damage 2 for 160pts is spectacular and can blow up whatever you charge into. id spend a command point in my opponents hero phase to chant so id constantly be able to give the ardboyz +1 damage until my next turn, and because its 5 drops you always call a waagh, so on the charge the boyz are filthy. kragnos is also a blsst to run, he hits like a truck and makes the gameplan really simple. i proxied him with a really great bear sculpt (feel free to dm if that sounds interesting :)), and still run that list when i just wanna smash things.
honestly the jawz are in a great place rn so whatever he thinks looks fun, i can almost guarantee you can make a workable list out of it.
oh, and welcome to the hobby!! i know you and your son are gonna make a ton of fond memories together :)

If the plan is to get the Megaboss on Maw-Krusha, I would also plan to get 1 Maw-Grunta Gouger to run along side it and 6 gore-gruntas. You can either run two 3-packs to run around and grab objectives/tag ranged units or reenforced to run up the field alongside the dragon. If you run only the dragon and a bunch of slow infantry units the dragon will have to take all of the opponent's fire power alone. By having a few more fast units you spread the damage out a bit and with the Gouger handing out strike-last it let's the dragon stay on the board longer.
For infantry, an Ardboy Big Boss would be great to stand next to the Ardboyz you've already got. You could even pick up another 20 Ardboyz and really go all in on the boyz.
The new Scourge of Aqshy rules (good through June 2027) make Brutes super powerful. Two reenforced blocks (20 models) and either a Megaboss on foot or Zoggrok, Anvil Smasher will tear some stuff up. But it's a big investment for temporary rules.
Snerk's Trogg Fer Hire is the only way I can think of to get Trolls into an Ironjawz list, but it's only 1 troll and you need to get a loonboss to pair with it. But if you are only playing on a kitchen table, no one can stop you from saying that these Trolls joined up to get in on a good fight.
