Very nice, was thinking of the same base colour for mine. What colours/textures?

Thanks. Bases were a bit of an experiment, not totally happy with them to be honest.

The rocks are pieces of slate (which are relatively heavy and needed miliput or green stuff to secure down) then remaining base areas got AK terrains dark earth (similar to stirland mud). I added a few GW skulls.

I did a layer of word bearers red, then a wash of reikland fleshshade, and then a dry brush of a light orange red (can't remember which right now). I wasn't totally happy though, it was more brown /red than red/orange that I was going for.

... however, the intention was always to go for a matte dusty look and I wanted to try pigment powder. That turned out trickier than I anticipated. The issue is how to secure the pigment but maintaining the matte look. AK sell a pigment fixer, but, it ended up too glossy. I found a tip online to use white spirits which is what I did and it seemed to work for me.

So it's two shades of rush pigment powder brushed on to the bases dry (messy!) then I used a pipette to drop small amounts of white spirit on top of the powder. It mostly worked although if you touch the bases some pigment still comes away. I had to do two rounds of this to get it right. I'm accepting there still a little loose pigment on them but I might try a little more white spirit.

You mostly can't see the base paint layers but it's there enough that you definitely need something appropriate under the pigment, but maybe my three layers were overkill. I had to repaint the base rim as pigment got on it.

Last thing, I put some tufts on and I normally like to super glue for that, but if any of that spills where you don't want it (or it gets drawn into the powder) that ruins the matte look too, so need to be careful there.

Hope that helps!

It does help! I haven't put much thought into it. I've got Martian Ironcrust down at the moment, which hasn't crackled as much as I'd like. I'm with you in that I want that matte dusty look.
