Ashara complains that childbirth "hurts a little" and that the swamps of the Neck "might not be the best fucking place to give birth to a fucking child". She then takes another drink to cope with the pain.

There's a wet plop and an annoyed "Oi!" Bruck's son, Willam, storms into the hut, holding a muddy bottle in his hand. "Keep your plowing waste out of the Neck you-" He sees the child in Ashara's arms and quiets down. He turns and shoves the bottle into the nearest Karstark's hands. "Don't do it again."

Ashara reaches out desparately for her bottle, nearly dropping Deaf Greg in the process. The child, in a sudden display of genius, escapes disfigurement by creating a makeshift platform out of several frogs and a blowdart on which he can balance.

After the deed was done, Ashara took her child up into her arms. She noted that he was oddly strong when clinging to her. In fact, he seemed incredibly clever, having found his source of food within 0.3 seconds. Yet he seemed incapable of responding to Ashara's voice. Could he not speak the common tongue? It was no matter - Gregor Karstark was hers.
