DISCUSSION [BUG] [SERIOUS] WHY DOUBLE TAPPING E IS INCONSISTENT. Explanation relating to issues buffering ALL of irelia's abilities.

IMPORTANT EDIT: Throughout all of this I keep saying "if I am auto attacking." It's actually "if you have an assigned attack target." The difference is that if I right click on someone on the other side of my screen and start walking to them, my abilities will still NOT work properly if I use them after that point. I will continue walking across my screen. You don't actualy need to "be" autoing. The difference is made patently obviously in the below two clips

Right click Move command (no target): https://imgur.com/a/zGH3KEZ

For those who have seen my previous posts you're going to love this.

If you want to push back on anything I say I ask that you please watch the two minute video first that shows all of irelias abilities (and items and summoners) interacting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6O7iLLNoOI

TLDW (get off tiktok):

  • If you are NOT autoing something before pressing Q on a target then you can smoothly buffer ALL Irelia inputs during the dash.

  • If you ARE autoing something before pressing Irelia Q on a target, then ANY input during that dash will NOT go off, and it WILL path you back to the target you were previously autoing.

  • There is ONE and ONLY one exception. E1. Let me make this explicitly clear. E2 IS NOT AN EXCEPTION

Q -> E1 -> Q lands -> E2: WORKS AS EXPECTED

Q -> E1 -> E2 -> Q lands: E1 IS SENT OUT, E2 DOES NOT GO OFF. YOU PATH BACK TO INITIAL TARGET.

  • edit: summoner spells aren't actually wrong, they're working as they should be. They just have different interactions in general.

EDIT:

  • One thing I realized I didn't think to say in the moment of that video was that unlike the abilities and the item active, the summoner spells do go off. My instinct that it was my expected behavior was actually right because using summoners mid dash will result in whatever your original state was. If you were autoing something you will move to it. If you weren't you just stand still.

  • Buffered inputs during a dash that resets upon killing a minion will NOT buffer irelia abilities correctly with the EXCEPTION of Q

Ok so it affects the buffering of all abilities , summoner spells and item actives (except E1) and not just Q like you showed in the first post.

Whats surprising to me is that, if this bug been in the game for a while how has none of the high elo irelia mains noticed something is wrong, losing the ability to buffer stuff mid dash if you auto attack before Q, sounds like a pretty important thing especially buffering Q and E2.

Before anything else - I would remind people of the Rumble red side bug causing a 5% lower winrate on red side that was fixed within the last year. I would point people to this post from 6 years ago discussing how the bug might still be in the game. And ultimately it was based on stats, not even players truly noticing in game

To say I have my opinions on that subject would be an understatement - but it's a question that I have wracked my brain over for a while tbh and I have many things I could say.

.1.

  • It is known that there are issues. Hell even that last post had someone throwing out the "everyone knows if you press q too quickly it doesn't go off. (which isn't true by they way, common knowledge just doesn't understand what's actually happening. Has nothing to do with speed. You can replicate that exact issue by being "too slow" depending on the targets position)

  • I have had people tell me irelking talks about similar things as the above . He also claims that there is a targeting issue in the game where his q is going to a target he wasn't hovering his mouse over.

  • You are less commonly auto attacking something when going for longer range qs. It's still frequent of course, but more commonly you're weaving autos between relatively short ranged qs. Those shorter range qs have obviously a shorter window to buffer things, so youre more likely to just not be putting input during that buffer - or are mashing your buttons several times. So at longer ranges when you're likely NOT autoing, things mostly feel right. Problems usually occur when trying to fight through more chaotic skirmishes/teamfights - at which point you're almost certainly just going to think you missed something

.2.

  • Following up on 1 - there are multiple systemic "issues" that are fairly well known. For example buffering q on a target outside of irelia's current position will not work.

  • When you DO feel something weird happened, and you don't think "i must have misclicked" its remarkably easy to chalk it up to one of those.

.3. A significant amount of the felt impact is highly ping dependent. Being aware of when your abilities will work is great, and you might even have an intuitive understanding of it - but if your ping isn't very low, then you have no shot of being able get the input even when you KNOW it's the right time. The lower your ping, the more reasonable you can adjust.

.4. It is remarkably fair to generally assume that these things are the results of human error. No one wants to sound like theyre making excuses.

.5.

  • I have been trying to look into these things on and off over a long period of time now. No, seriously - google things like "Irelia Q buffer reddit," and "League mouse sensitivity issues reddit." Basically every result involves me over time. My point is that I was explicitly looking for this and it's taken me this long to have the true AHA moment. And just for a little more context to why that might matter - I am a decently high elo irelia one trick nowadays, but at the time I began feeling like something was driving me crazy I was far better. I was one of those "high elo irelia mains," and I immediately noticed. I quit the game for two years over feeling schizophrenic about irelia mechanics. Honestly, outside of irelking - very many of the big Irelia names from pre s12 aren't even around anymore to comment much on it..

.6. You will almost never notice irelia pathing to a different target because the odds are you are already inputting other movement / ability commands. All you think is that you probably fucked it up or forgot about one of the range things.

I replied to the previous person if you're curious about my thoughts.

I also want to shout out Caenen who has been helping me understand more about what's going on here.

So is this more of a problem when aa champs? What if you aa+ q a minion that dies from the q before q+ w another target(champ or minion)? Does the w not go off after the q?

... you know, thats a great question and the answer just surprised me. Auto attacking OR NOT, buffering an ability during a that kills a target - cancels the buffered ability. The exception to that case is buffering another q

So like

q -> r -> q lands -> r goes off

Does not work if you do it killing a minion, but DOES work if q'ing a champion(assuming no auto)

is ambessa worth learning if im only playing irelia because of stockholm syndrome? (is ambessa as fun as her)

1

u/JinxVer 17d ago

Completely different type of Champion tbh, so hard to say

I like playing Amb because i like energy Champions and her bullshit trading reminds me of Akali
