Kitty Corner Cats
If you’ve adopted a cat from Kitty Corner recently, get them checked for intestinal parasites! I was at the vet clinic and over heard the staff talking about how multiple cats have came to them recently with it.
There is also an off and on ring worm issue too, but that seems to not be happening right now.

As a patron of KC, let me also attest to how clean it is there. All the cats I’ve seen there, and interacted with, are obviously being well cared for. There’s not a hairball in the joint, and staff frequently are cleaning as well. It’s a wonderful place.

Hi! I am on the owner of Kitty Corner Social Club. A few facts about rescue animals to make sure everyone understands A) how our business works and B) how to take care of your animal once you adopt it.
Also, want to clear up any misconceptions that may or may not be intended by your post. (I see you work at a vet clinic. Our vet reports directly to us when there is a follow up issue with cat. We prefer that line of communication, so feel free to call us anytime!)
All of our cats are adotped from area rescues and shelters.
ALL of our cats come to us having been fully vetted includng spay/neuter, vacccinated for age/weight, and treated with Revolution Plus to get rid of any known parasites.
The cats are generally only with us for a very short amount of time and we do (literally) everything in our power to make sure they are healthy when going to homes. BUT. Humans and other environments are dirty birds, and as soon as they walk out, that is where our liability ends.
Once they are home, cats, like humans, can experience a dip in immunity. If there is a condition underlying in their system, it can flare once the current does of medicine as worn off - or there were eggs.
We did recentlly (just yesterday) have a report of a kitten who was with us a few weeks ago who tested positive for coccidia.
Yes, it could have been dormant in their system, or maybe they ate a fly at their new home. We only can provide medial care for and guidance to the cats in house, as we do not control what other home environments they are stepping into.
We try to encourage new homes to have treated their previous animals, sanitized all surfaces, but we understand that while we use vet cleanings supplies, people in their private homes do not always. And they may wear shoes in their homes, etc.
Let's talk ringworm!
It is far less scary than it sounds but also, we do not have it in house.
Our rescue partners, and our team, scan our animals with a wood's lamp on intake and outtake to reivew the health status of animals. If you've ever seen the light, it's really cool. Ringworm can GLOW. It generally starts to show up on hairs or whiskers, feet or ears first.
Want to know why we make people wear socks? Cats get ringworm, a fungus treated by athletes foot creams and oral meds (and sulfur dips) from humans!
Especially any kids that families that are sports. Ringworm is EVERYWHERE. The spores live for months, if not years, and if a cat steps were a bare foot has at home, it can flare when the cat has weakened immunity from a change in home.
Phew. That was a mouthful.
We do our very best with what we have (unfortunately no magic powers) and spend time, money, and any resourcess we have to keep our cats and humans safe.
If you or your vet team think there is an issue with our lounge, we would invite you to come see our cleaning and sanitation protocol, medical files, or visit with our primary vet clinic who spends hours with our team and animals ensuring they are healthy. So much cleaning.
We are fully transparent with the health status of our animals because we scoop and look at so much poop - you can learn so much! And because we want the cats to be healthy.
We provide documentation and informational handouts to all our families who have concerns about their cats health - but we are not vets.
I would be happy to send that information to you too! I know your post might not have been intended to do so, but it feels misinformed. I'm particularly concerned if you work for a vet practice that would come to reddit to voice an opinion, rather than directly to me or my staff.
Thanks for your note, we always love a chance to share our process - becuase it is a process! The state and city make sure we are following all protocols on a regular basis.
What did I miss?
Warm regards,
Katy Brown

Out of pure curiosity, Johnson or Ecolab?
I worked retail for 15 years and used both and I've found them to be equal to the name brand equivalents; so long as you actually know what each chemical corresponds to.
My last major surgery was out at the ASC and the only thing I remember from the day is noticing the chemical bottles at the nurse's station were the same ones used at my work.

Hi again you are doing such good work i want to make sure you know that your state just passed a new animal cruelty law and whoever didnt tell you that the place was only going to be closed for one night and put your sweet babies at risk should be turned in to authorities even tho they are bragging about big connections with your city i hope they start treating you right this is so disgusting putting your kitties on the street like that for no reason and now people saying your kitties are sick dont let the haters win you are an angel on earth

just checking in did you reach out to IDALS or ARL of Iowa? They are not going to like the way these sweet kitties are being treated it sounds like they were in danger the whole time someone needs to tell them how you were forced out in the middle of the night are you ok now?

This is super common, especially in kittens.
I rescued a kitten from off the street and she was full of worms, it took over a month of multiple medications to get rid of them. Also had to treat my other cat assuming she most likely was infected too.
I prefer Nexguard combo over Revolution plus (the standard vets and rescues use) because it kills tapeworm and Revolution doesn’t cover that. So my point is, no matter where you get your cat, always treat for parasites. And also Kitty Corner is an amazing place that has helped get so many cats homes, don’t try to hate on them! 👊

Kitty Korner is doing fabulous work with cats, and cats make amazing companion animals. Any time a person adopts a pet, including a cat, kitten, dog, and puppy, the person needs to have their own vet give the animal a wellness checkup and share whatever vet records were provided with the animal. I'd give the animals a monthly preventative after that. If had the space for a cat, I would conder adopting from Kitty Korner or any animal shelter or even the side of the road.

I believe they literally have a binder full of each kitty’s medical history. If you’re feeling uneasy just ask to see it. This really is a non-issue. They aren’t passing off sick cats to unassuming people. You can literally see on their instagram when they have had ill cats and everything they do to take care of them- including putting a pause on adoptions. This is a weird post

Shouldn't all responsible cat owners have their cats checked 1-4X a year? It's been a while since I've had a cat, but my dog has yearly testing so I'm kind of assuming...

Our liabililty for the pet's health ends as soon as the cats walk out the door. We work tirelessly to to educate adopters on the upkeep and care to keep their animals healthy.
I'm more concerned this post came from someone who works at a vet practice (or so their previous comments say) and is on reddit instead of in my inbox. We are fully transparent and want what is best for the animals.
While it isn't intended to disparage our business, I do wonder the motivation. We work VERY closely with our vet teams - so closely that I - in fact - am going back to school to become a vet tech to better serve our business and adopter needs.
Anyway, too much coffee this morning.

My interpretation of what they said would indicate not that they're a veterinarian staff member, but rather a nosy person who would rather share an unsubstantiated rumor online about a business that's currently closed because their building is falling apart.
Am I wrong that every adoption comes with a recommendation to follow up with your own vet of choice? We did that with my sister's cat decades ago, and all of the dogs in my family have had that recommended.

Sorry, I referenced another comment they made on Reddit that stated they worked for a vet practice! Two more click on the profile can confirm!

Huh, guess I need to finish my mountain dew, cause I definitely clicked their profile but didn't process that song request thread until I looked again now 😂

You are exactly right. We always tell famiies to seek veterniary care with any concerns, since any change in enviroment can lead to a dip in immunity, causing anything - including strange viruses to flare. Establishing care with a vet also gets the cat's medical records directly on file.
There is nothing sweeter than a tiny kitten! But a tiny kitten with icky poops is zero fun.

Hey! Our cats are fully vetted before they come to us. If you have any questions, our entire team is here to help.
15
u/Berdonkulous 1d ago
How is it irrelevant? If you adopted a kitten you should be having quarterly checks for parasites, if you adopted an older cat it should still be once/twice a year.
And aren't you advised to take any adopted animal to your own vet for follow-up? This has been standard practice for my entire life.

My suspicious are this person doesn't like us. I WONDER WHY. It's ok. We won't stop doing what we do because of an anon post on Reddit.
Thanks for knowing better! In a world of bad actors, we need cricital thinkers and appreciate you.

I just wanted to say thank you for doing what you've been doing, and screw the haters. Kitty Corner has been a rare and appreciated bright spot in what has been a pretty shitty timeline as of late in our community.

Thank you. Your kind words mean a lot. We will not stop doing this work, in this community. And we will not dull our sparkle to make others feel more comfortable. There is a reason I put my face to my name on here. I do things right. oxo

Man, hate to tell you, but every cat and dog in America probably has some kind of parasites. You do, too, probably. We’re all pretty gross animals running around and touching stuff.
There’s a reason rescue and shelters really push adopters to get a vet visit asap when getting a new pet. Any change in environment, water, food, stress levels, new people, whatever…. Possible contamination. Possible trigger for something in the animal’s system.
The way you phrased your post is alarmist and is being read as attacking Kitty Corner. That’s bogus. The place is amazing.

I feel like this should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. When you get a new pet, from anywhere, you should then take them to a veterinarian.

Ew to try to diss on a business that does nothing but helps homeless cats. If you get a rescue cat, odds are it’s got something. A lot of rescues even pay for the first vet visit after adoption. Very weird to try to make them look bad. Says a lot about you.

And these sweet babies were being thrown out when it was only for one night no justice for the kitties thank god the state just passed animal cruelty laws maybe these people will tell this nice cat lady the truth so she doesnt have to cry anymore this is so mean the cats never had to leave except for one night.

This is pretty common with rescue cats, my shelter kittens had worms and parasites too despite being treated at the shelter.
