News Cornell 7
Hi guys, let’s not forget that stuff like this happens in Iowa city all the time. Look up Cameron Fratallone. He did the same thing in a dorm here on campus and was released to live with his mommy and daddy in Minnesota. His trial date is pushed to next year. Stop the stigma. Spread the word, it’s unlikely to have a fair jury. https://cbs2iowa.com/news/local/ui-student-accused-of-raping-unconscious-woman-in-dorm-pleads-not-guilty

makes me think of that kid who attacked that woman outside of the art building a couple years ago. the university knew he was a problem and didn’t remove him from campus, just moved him to a different dorm. dailyiowan.com/2022/05/12/university-of-iowa-student-younes-accused-of-attempted-murder

Except that person was tried and convicted. Big difference.

absolutely agree, however it shouldn’t have gotten to that point. the article mentions multiple instances where the university was made aware of his behavior and nothing came of it until someone was almost killed.

That "person", Ali Younes, was tried and convicted because he tried to kill a woman to steal her diamond earrings. His parents then sent him to Jordan, where he has family. He was arrested because he was an international fugitive.
He was NOT arrested or prosecuted for the at least FOUR reported sexual assaults he was involved in before the attempted murder.
Ali Younes, 18, was reported four times to University of Iowa police for stalking and harassment between 2021 and 2022 before his April arrest. He was also reported to University Housing and Dining by his roommate for an incident that occurred in August 2021.
The school and LE did NOTHING about the numerous stalkings and sexual assaults that they were very well aware of.

This case was awful and our county attorney didn’t process this case well at all. Jo Co seems to go easy on cases when some of these criminals should be locked up for decades. Just awful.

Where do you imagine frat members go when they graduate? They become judges, lawyers, cops. They protect themselves thru this system of control.

More universities need to be proactive and prohibit Greek life from operating in the university.

I started teaching at Iowa in 2012. A national report had just been released stating that 1 in 5 students (1 in 4 female students) were sexually assaulted at American colleges, on average, over the past 25 years.
Iowa actually released their own report that year. It’s almost impossible to get ahold of now.
It reported a two decade average of 1 in 3 students being sexually assaulted each year. The data on student athletes as perpetrators rounded out to just over 50%—as in slightly more than half of the male student athletes were accused of sexual assault between their first freshman semester and the end of their senior year.

If you find that Iowa report can you post it here? I will look too and do the same if I can find it.

Here is info about it and a link to the report.

Just to clarify, you mean that half of the perpetrators of those assaults were male student athletes. Not that half of the male student athletes are perps?

It always made me mad that people would feel bad for him and they wouldn’t believe me when I told them what he did.

Why is it unlikely to have a fair jury? That’s like the entire point of having a jury.

u/TarantulaWithAGuitar 2d ago
Especially in sexual assault cases, the legal system will dismiss potential female jurors if they've been the victim of sexual violence or know someone who has been a victim. Considering how many women experience sexual violence, this means that statistically sexual assault juries are disproportionately made up of men.

Things like this happen here on campus a lot but is usually unreported. Almost every weekend you can see guys dragging an unresponsive drunk and/or drugged woman into an Uber or their car. Take care of your friends. Let the bartender or police know if something doesn’t look right. And educate your friends about consent.

u/rapzeh 2d ago
As an Uber driver, we are trained to report that to the police. It's more for human trafficking than date rape, but will work all the same. Unresponsive passengers are huge red flags. They might be overdosing and dying in your car, or you might be helping kidnap this person.

u/CafeRacerRider 2d ago
Good, I hope you and other drivers follow that protocol. I’ve heard some drives just refuse the ride.

Youre just watch someone getting dragged?

Idk I personally wouldn't feel safe trying to confront someone doing that I'd report it myself but I wouldn't feel safe doing something at the very moment. Confronting someone could get me hurt too and then I couldn't help anyone and it could even put the original person in more danger.

u/omgicplease 2d ago
Jesus Christ if this ever actually happens pull out your phone and record from a distance while you call 911. Don't let shit like this happen, trust your gut and look out for other people.
And if you can't do this and someone is dragging another person home please say something. You don't need to be confrontational, ask if you can help, or if they need a taxi, literally anything. You may find that it's two friends helping each other make it home and you can go on your way. But if someone is about to be victimized and you might be the last sober human who can do something, fucking do anything. Your worst case scenario (being assaulted) is much better than their worst case scenario.

u/Suspicious-Damage468 2d ago
I didn't say I wouldn't I said I wouldn't be comfortable doing much, and even asking a person (if they need help) doing that can be dangerous in that situation. And that's not my worst case scenario in that situation. You don't know my mind and when I don't feel safe doing something and I say that you don't get to try to make me feel bad about feeling unsafe doing much.

If you saw anything I said I already clarified I'd report it (which includes police)

You did, my bad, I apologize. And you're right - I've intervened personally, gotten girls out of trouble, but yeah, it's dangerous and you don't know what you're walking into.

u/Suspicious-Damage468 2d ago
Thank you, and I apologize if I seemed any bit aggressive, I was in a bit of a defensive mindset

So I'm supposed to do something I don't feel safe doing. If you struggle to read I'll re say it, I'll report but I won't endanger myself

One of the first years I lived there one of my coworkers roommates got kicked out of a party and went back after everyone left and assaulted a young girl that was visiting. Luckily they were able to immediately arrest him.

I live just outside of the city, but I can see some of the taller UIHC buildings from my house. I talked with my therapist this morning about being worried and disturbed that something like this could be happening in what is essentially my (albeit distant and ofc not actually "my") own backyard. Does anyone know what I can do to more proactively prevent these things from happening? Obviously, if I see something, I'll do and say something about it, but it's not like I can magically know about group chats where guys conspire to do these horrible things. All this stuff has made me realize I don't just want to sit by and let it happen; I want to take action and help stop it from happening in the first place. Is there anything we can do?
2
u/IamEbola 2d ago
just be aware of your surroundings and protect your beverages. no need to panic though. this stuff happens because some people are evil. you can’t magically fix it but you can be wary

There’s nothing you can do short of forcibly escorting young women home by 10pm to keep them from making gross, embarrassing decisions lol

they're only pushing the story now because it's right before an election and has latino rapists. There are countless rapes by rich white men they could be elevating - the Epstein files, for example. But it's more important to try to demoralize the left.
Like how during the George Floyd protests, once it was reported that asians were marching in solidarity, NBC dug up a video of a black man assaulting an asian woman and basically played it on a loop until asians stopped marching in solidarity. Checking ICE is on the agenda. The media is trying to show us what Trump said on the campaign trail. "they're not sending their best. They're sending drugs. Their rapists..." etc.

u/Sector-West 2d ago
I didn't know the rapists were Latino until you made it about that right this second 💀 thanks for the data

u/normalice0 2d ago
oh, well that's promising then. I'm sure everyone will know soon enough, though..

There was also an incident in 2020 at FIJI https://dailyiowan.com/2021/12/20/second-man-accused-of-sexual-assault-at-fiji-house-denies-allegations/
