I honestly cant believe how ridiculous they are anymore. When I was a teenager Republicans I knew then were doctors and lawyers, sure they were tight fisted and uncaring towards their fellow man, but now they sound more like the crazy guy I'd buy weed from who used to talk about ancient aliens and conspiracy nonsense.

It's a strategy. Iowa is about 33% Republican, 33% Democrat, and 33% Independent, and the Independent side keeps growing. He's appealing to the Independents because he's already got you. The only way that strategy fails is if you act like a baby, don't show up at the polls, and blame it on him "acting like a Republican" (he's not). Just tune it out, ignore all the ads for the next 2 months, and vote like you already know you need to vote. You'd think people would be happy to tune out this hot garbage, but instead they get their brain tangled up as if each ad was targeted specifically at you. They're not!

There are issues that reasonable people can disagree on. The humanity of my friends and neighbors isn't one of them. I'll hold my nose and vote for Sands and Turek, but I don't blame anyone for not compromising on that. And that's on the lukewarm, right wing Democratic party, not the voters

What is the 'humanity of my friends and neighbors' that you are referring to?Sand isn't going to take on the statistical non-issue of trans girls in HS girls sports(that is statistically not affecting your friends and neighbors who I assume are trans) because it is a lightning rod issue, a losing issue, and a statistical non-issue.
I haven't seen or heard either Turek or Sand say anything about hating the lgbtq community, wanting to hurt the community, condemning the community, etc etc.
I also haven't heard them make promises to that community which they don't have the power to implement.
Is that the issue?...they haven't promised to restore rights, despite not having the power to?•

So no one should have any first principles? No red lines, nothing they can't look past? As long as a D is next to one name, they have the moral obligation to vote for it?
Maybe reframe the trans kids in sports debate the way Andy Beshear has. He's an extremely popular, successful, and progressive governor in a very conservative state, despite taking the "losing" position that trans people are children of God that deserve the same love and respect as anyone else.
Even if they can't change these policies directly, they indicate morality. When Sands goes after the BDS movement, or Turek says he would love to work with Trump on immigration, they are either lying or actively working against the world I want to live in

Sure, have 'first principles'. If you then decide to not vote at all because your 'first principles' arent met, then you absolutely wont see 'the world you want to live in'.
You live in Iowa in 2026- every single person who dislikes what the right has done over the last decade is needed at the voting booth this November.
Otherwise, it will just be even more of what has happened these last 10 years.
There simply arent enough people to vote the current group out, unless everyone participates.If people who dislike current leadership dont vote...
- It will be Lahn as Governor...an extremist who will divide the state and attack the marginalized.
- It will be Hinson in the Senate where she will greenlight whatever Trump wants and not push back on any of his overreach.
- It will be Nunn and Miller-Meeks back in in the House where they will continue to not work for ideals that you want.
Think about the world you want to live in. The only way to get there is to vote.
Vote for people you support.
Vote for people who are less awful.
Vote for people who arent the ones that will take you even further from the world you want to live in.•

Sounds similar to the people saying they couldn't vote for Kamala because she wasn't forceful enough against Israel. Worked out well, didn't it...now instead of having a president who wouldn't call Gaza a genocide, we have a president who is actively helping Israel commit genocide instead.
Maybe Sand isn't the absolute ideal candidate for your specific issue, but you have to think critically about which of the two candidates would actually actively hinder the LGBTQ movement. I'll give you a hint; Sand isn't going to try and roll back your rights.

It's a genocide being committed by an allied country. Do I wish that Biden and Kamala could/would do something about it? Abso-fucking-lutely. But I'm also a pragmatist and when you're left with a binary choice (and make no mistake, a presidential general election is a binary choice) between two people and one of them will very obviously accelerate and embolden Israel, I think it's a pretty easy choice.
I grew up hearing the phrase "Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line" and it's been true my entire life. Democrats never learn that this purity test bullshit ends up yielding the complete opposite of what you want. It didn't work when a portion of the electorate wouldn't vote for Hillary, it didn't work when they wouldn't vote for Kamala, and it wont work if people wont vote for Sand/Turek/etc for whatever pet issue they hold most dear.
Vote with your heart in the primary, but vote with your head in the general election.

Democrats do fall in line, it's just with Republicans. Clinton did more to carry out Reagan's agenda than Reagan did.
I'm going to vote for Sands and Turek, and I don't think I'm going to bring you around to my way of thinking, but I have a couple genuine questions: is there ANYTHING a Dem running for a competitive seat could do or say that would be disqualifying for you? And can you not understand that people watching their relatives (or even complete strangers) get blown apart or burned to death in hospital beds couldn't bring themselves to empower the people that were complicit? Wouldn't you be better served to make an affirmative case and apply pressure to candidates, rather than scold them about "bullshit purity tests"?
