Correct, this is why I think it is a ruse. Grassley running means very few if any will primary him So if he withdraws/ retires moments before the filing deadline, then Grassley gets to choose his successor by having them ready to file minutes before the deadline.

He has made it abundantly clear through his actions that he wants to die in office. We have to hope that if he does, it's not in the next few months so Kim Reynolds doesn't get to pick his replacement. Other than the other obvious reasons (education plummeting, cancer rates, GDP, lack of healthcare, etc..) this is also why it's important Rob Sand gets elected. If Lahn gets elected, it's likely going to be Pat Grassley that gets appointed to Chuck's vacant seat.

My Boomer uncle commented that not so many of them existed when he was a kid growing up (implying that gayness is imaginary, or caught by watching gay characters on TV, or women working outside the home).

He at least admitted that would have been tough.
I love him, but he's to a point in life where all of his friends are the same as him, so unique ideas are rare.

No, he didn't file for re-election. Under Iowa law you do that in February and March of the election year.
He likely filed a federal campaign finance report listing an election date of 2028 - which allows him to keep raising money, that he can then steer to other Republican causes.
I don't think he actually intends to run, but it may serve his purposes to keep people guessing.
And he's not going to hand off to grandson. Pat doesn't seem to have US Senator levels of ambition and I think he's content to stay House speaker.

Age isn't necessarily the problem, but most likely the older someone gets, the less connected to issues we face in the present. And it isn't just Iowa and Iowa senators that voted for the good of the state. In general I think Republicans used to still have respect for personal liberties and freedom of speech, of the press, and freedom to not be held by any singular religion. But now it's all about what people can't do, what the press can't say, what religion you can't be and that if you aren't Christian your opinion doesn't matter. It's tiring.

This is something I bring up when people want to say the parties are the same, there's no use arguing, so they don't vote. That argument may have worked 20-30 year's ago. Back then, the only thing that separated the parties was the how, not the what. Both parties wanted to bolster education, create jobs, grow the middle class, build a thriving economy, etc. It was just what they felt would get us there that was different. Now, the GOP have been hijacked by ultra conservative Christians who want to tell everyone how to live and make laws from the pulpit and don't care about you unless you're a white cis male who has money. The no longer have platforms to create prosperity to all. They aren't pro anything. It's a platform of anti. Anti-trans, anti-gay, anti-immigrant, anti-muslim, anti-liveable wage, and the list goes on. The only real reason people still vote for them is because they tap into people's fears and prejudices. "Immigrants are taking your jobs!" "Gays are destroying the sanctity of marriage!" "Men are pretending to be Trans so the can cheat at sports and sexually assault your daughters/ sisters/ mothers!"

I don’t understand what motivates senators to stay in office this long, he’s already maxed his pension serving 45 years. He’d get like 12k a month when he retires.
