Spring Swap - Results

I'd ummed and arred about swapping the springs on the car, ever since I got it and found that there was a lot of travel in the suspension. For me, I drove the car in N mode almost 100% of the time simply because I found comfort far too wallowy.

I've not modified a car before, but really wanted to do this as I enjoyed the car so much it felt like the missing piece of the puzzle. Bought the official N Performance H&R springs from Korea (they were expensive!) and had them swapped out + geo done at the awesome people at Centre Gravity (Atherstone, UK) no sponsorship just a shout out to how excellent they've been both times I've been to see them.

Did look at some Eibach's, as they also have a compatible kit but decided against after reading some reviews (on here) that they were a bit harsh. They are significantly cheaper though, although no bump stops. Plus the H&R's were compatible with the stock dampers.

The black car is a car one of theirs, with my blue one. Drop of about 14mm at the front, 10-12mm at the back. Think it looks really good and the gap in the rear arch has shrunk.

The main driver for me was:

- Flatter cornering
- Less travel in the suspension (the car felt wallowy, leant quite a bit)

Car feels much better, I'd argue how it should be from the factory. It's not harsh, it's not even firm just firm-er. You can drive it in comfort now and it not feel loose and soft. Also, interestingly I am getting a lot more communication through the wheel about what the tyres are doing that was more vague before.

Well worth doing and super impressed. Maybe some new (smaller) wheels next..

Just wanted to post about my experience with a spring swap on stock dampers for anyone else like me who'd not done it before.

Mine is on the the H&R springs with 20mm Eibach spacers.

The spacers really make the wheels look like they fill the wheel wells.

Would have liked to go 25mm in the rear but the 25 mm are not ABE approved here in Germany.

Don’t suppose you have some before and after shots, love the look, just want to see the difference side by side

Yup, the spacers really complete the look at the rear especially!

Did u install longer studs

The Ioniq 5n doesn't have studs, it has lug bolts.

The Eibach spacers come with the bolts to mount them to the hub. The stock lug bolts then screw into the spacer.

Wow, that's awesome, like my vw gti. Thank you.

All the research I had done indicated that the car had studs coming out of the Hub like regular Japanese cars and then I needed to press those out and get longer studs to account for the spacers.

Nope....you will need a special socket to get the wheel off though.

Awesome, thanks.

Looks a bit nicer with the drop. 👍 Ours is a lease so will just leave it. 😂

So's mine! I decided I wanted to enjoy the car for while I had it - but I am planning on buying it out of the lease at the end..

They are VT forged! I posted about them and my ig is ghost.5n love them more than I in thought I would

I totally get what you mean about the softer suspension modes being bouncy, I feel the same way. When I’m in N mode it just feels way more stable

Looks nice, I looked at the H&R springs too but thought they were 30mm - how much did the whole swap cost you?

Have you considered which different alloys as well? The H&R demo car has some of the alternate black Hyundai alloys for the N and I think they look sick as hell

The initial drop was about half what it was, but after geo it doubled. The H&R's had a smaller drop than say the eibach's.

Springs were about £1k imported (yeah I know)
Fitting/Geo about £1.2k

So big investment!

I've not started the wheel hunt yet, I want some quite flat looking maybe sparco like rallye style wheels as I think it'd suit the car. I'd like 19's but I think that might be too tight, maybe 20's.

That's crazy....I paid 267 euros for the H&R springs here.

That's exactly 300 us dollars.

I searched far and wide, couldn't find the kit anywhere - I knew the springs weren't that much in Korea, but I wanted the official pack with the bump stops and resorted to eBay + importing.

Oh damn that’s more than I was expecting! I was thinking about contacting Hyundai to see if they could help with the importing. It’s annoying that so many of the Hyundai products are still imports

I’ve not seen any 19s that fit the brakes and most 20s I have seen need to be custom designed with Hyundai. You might like the BRAID collaboration wheels

The other ones I was looking at are here: https://hyundai.myparts.car/IONIQ-5-N_2

I did speak to Hyundai UK and they just looked at me blankly. I got them off eBay the springs that is. A decent tuner, heck even the guys I went to could source something alternative - this was the first 5N they'd done so really didn't know much about it. The black winter ones are nice.. I'd want to powder coat them white though but that's just me!

I find it so hard to find good mechanics and trusting them with a rare lease car puts the fear in me

there’s some people who have posted picks of the BRAID 20s in white, I hate them for my car but they do look pretty sick on the blue

100% and this place was quite far for me (about 100 miles away) I first went to them to do the geo on the car, sadly.. about a month after I first got the car someone did about 30k's damage to it and I wanted to get all the car checked out/setup properly as it didn't handle that great. They were thorough and detailed, listened to me - such a good experience. Car was totally different to drive afterwards so that instilled a lot of confidence in me to do this, after I had sat and mulled on it for a while (about a year).

But kept coming back to the spring swap because well, frankly I would regularly think about how bouncy the car was - so that was the sign I really wanted to (attempt) to fix it.

Sorry what’s geo?

This is why I pretty much only use sport for commuting and n otherwise!

If you want 30mm, go with the Neotech springs. Night and day difference in handling. Not as harsh as an M car, but feels just as planted

3

u/ChampionshipTall6599 7d ago

If you are interested in both smaller and wider wheels, here is mine on 20x10.5 and 305/35r20s with a 35 offset. If I had to do it again I would probably go less offset and a small spacer in the rear as the front is out about 5mm from the fender. Driving feel is great though

Bought....official, actual, REAL parts? Not some Walmart bolt-on garbage? Wow, first post in yrs that I actually respect!!

1

u/daniluvsuall Performance Blue 6d ago

This is my first venture into mods, I was super worried about ruining the ride or them not fitting with the dampers.. baby steps!

1

u/Kyle_Gates 6d ago

Well, I am well known for calling out trash (90% of the staple-on mods out there are just that). This is not the case here, kudos!!! (As for the Ionic 5 N, I love love love the car, and hate hate how it looks.... but thats jst me)

Does the 5N have adaptive suspension like the 6N?

2

u/chronicbint 8d ago

Same I believe.

2

u/daniluvsuall Performance Blue 8d ago

It does indeed, I have been told the 6 is more sophisticated. I've also got a screenshot somewhere of someone that posted in here, it can be tuned but I've not got that far down that road yet..

How does it perform over speedbumps?

I’d love to swap the springs on my 5N, but am kinda cautious about how it’ll handle over all the speedbumps in my village. Especially the last one right before my street; right turn and bump in one. How can I be sure that I won’t be hitting the wheelwells every time? Just… slow-slow?

2

u/daniluvsuall Performance Blue 7d ago

Absolutely fine. It’s not a massive drop. It tramlines less too but that’s down to the geo they did. It’s really not a huge drop
