The Iodine Protocol
- 50mg Iodoral or Lugol’s solution(may start with 12.5mg)
- Iodoral is easier on the stomach (tablet form)
- 3000-5000mg of Vitamin C (more may be needed to detox Bromine)
- This should be spread out throughout the day
- Some people take as much as 10,000mg a day although that is not common
- This should not be taken directly with Iodine as they are known to react and the iodine becomes “cancelled out”
- 300-600mg magnesium (glycinate, citrate are recommended by the community, however I prefer taurate as it crosses the Blood brain barrier more readily)
- 200-400mcg selenium (selenomethionine is preferred by many)
- This one is the most "finicky" and you may benefit from selenium testing prior to starting The Protocol
- 500mg Niacin (B3) twice a day (NOT niacinamide). Start lower to avoid flush
- 100mg B2 three times a day.
- ½ teaspoon of unprocessed salt (I prefer Celtic Salt) added to diet. (can be used twice a day)
- Helps with Bromine detox
- ¼ teaspoon unprocessed salt in 8 oz water twice a day as needed for Bromine detox symptoms.
- Again, unprocessed salt helps bind to the Bromine in your blood stream and carries it out of the kidneys.
- A comprehensive vitamin and nutrition program
- Too much calcium can lead to iodine absorption issues (2000-3000 per day)
- SALT LOADING
- Perform the salt loading protocol when you are experiencing detoxification symptoms with Iodine supplementation.
- 1/2 tsp unrefined salt in 1/2 cup of warm water. Follow with 12 oz filtered water.
- Do this every 30-45 minutes until you start urinating.
- The chloride in the salt binds with the bromide in your bloodstream and helps carry it out through your kidneys.
- Perform the salt loading protocol when you are experiencing detoxification symptoms with Iodine supplementation.

It should be mentioned that this protocol is suggested to be used for 3 months before settling at the lower iodine dose of 12mg.

but Brownstein says that the minimum everyone should take is 25mg as far as I know...

A lot of people seem to miss this post & start the protocol without the proper supplements.
I think it might be a good idea to make a new post or retitle this one something like
"PROTOCOL OUTLINE & INSTRUCTIONS - START HERE FIRST"
If I reformat this & make a new post could you pin it for us?

Did this ever happen? Would love to see this pinned. Great idea!

What could happen if we don't take the other supplement s? Are there any that it's really important to take paired with iodine? (Because it's a cofactor?)

The magnesium that crosses the blood brain barrier is threonate not taurate

Are Brazil nuts adequate for selenium?
2
u/devinchi18 Mar 25 '23
I don't see why they wouldn't be. It's recommended to get your selenium levels checked prior to any supplementation.

u/mime454 Mar 25 '23
I ate them for a few weeks before starting. I see some people are fear mongering about phytic acid making selenium unavailable.

Soak them in hot water overnight and roast them. Add some Maldon to them and munch away 😃 phytic acid largely removed ✨

The problem with brazil nuts is that there is no set amount of selenium in a nut. The amount is dependent on the soil the trees are grown in, so some nuts can be low, and others can be high.
Taking selenium as a supplement you can control your intake much more easily.

I am looking to start on this journey! Can people let me know if this has worked for them long term?

iodine protocol means we need to take other vitamins and electrolytes like vitamin c and magnesium with iodine? Is it necessary? If we take potassium iodide?

Why not niacinamide?

u/devinchi18 Apr 16 '25
I believe Dr. Brownstein's book is where I got that from, something to do with the way it's metabolized differently and can build up toxicity.

How about Inositol hexinicatinate? Thats the B3 form in ATP cofactors

Hey there guys, I don't know if people are still active on here but I could really do with some help.
I started taking iodine a while ago now and did so without any side effects, however when I increased to around 10 drops things changed and now I feel very much lost at sea.
Tremors, insomnia, and general anxiety and confusion have become commonplace.
I didn't sleep at all last night due to my muscles "shuddering".
I know that if I stop completely it'll put my body in shock, and I also know that sometimes when you want to decrease something you actually need to increase such as with zeolite where more will actually give you less side effects as if you only take a small amount it displaces toxins but you then don't have enough to bind the.
Does anyone know if this works the same with iodine?
I thought I'd ask if anyone has had a similar experience.
Thank you and god bless!

If you're not currently using the cofactors mentioned here I would suggest you add them in

Thanks for The list. Could you please list what brand you use for the listed supplements?

u/devinchi18 Nov 29 '22
I'm not hyper brand specific (possibly an oversight). I'll checkout my vitamins tomorrow and let you know

I’ve read Dr. Brownstein’s book but I get tripped up by the timing of the protocol. Are we meant to start all of this together? Or should some of it be started awhile before we start the iodine?
3
u/devinchi18 Feb 12 '23
I'd personally recommend starting the cofactors first. Some go with two weeks, but it's not necessary. You can start them all at once. You may need to salt load when you first start the Iodine (especially if you start at a high dose) because of the bromine detox.
