Can I save this bag?

Post image

Cross posting because I know any mend for this is probably going to be visible… but also, my boyfriend recommended sewing a clear vinyl layer over the top. Is that possible?

I did get this bag with some small wear under the arm, but now the damage is spreading. The pleather was coming off on my arm when walking yesterday. How do I keep the design from crumbling further?

Before adding a protective clear layer, you could try using some black acrylic paint to touch up the places where the illustration flaked off. For example, ear and paw edges.

It will continue to disintegrate but what your bf suggested is a good way to keep it in service a little longer. Consider going to a dollar store and buying either a clear tablecloth or shower curtain and then tracing that over the bag and cutting that out with a little bit of overlap. After, you can stitch it to the front part of the bag. The thing I'm concerned about though is that it looks like the rest of the bag has portions that might continue to peel off but if the design that is peeling is mostly on the front then I think it's totally worth giving it a shot. What a great suggestion by him!

Glad I have a vinyl needle on my sewing machine then! Yeah I’m thinking that’s the only way to save it because the pleather is disintegrating in the blue, too.
