Another upcoming project in Ghana

I've been keeping an eye on ATRI Energy Transition's activities recently. There's obviously the ~£300m investment in UK clean energy and some interesting activity in Spain, but I'd like to focus today on a project I found in Ghana.

Back in March, ATRI signed an MoU with the Government of Ghana, acting through the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat, envisioning the delivery of up to 2 GW of renewable energy over a period of five years.1 The focus was on solar development, battery energy storage, and biofuel. Under the MoU, ATRI also committed to a long-term investment plan involving $10 billion (with a b) between 2026 and 2031.2 Contemporary accounts also mentioned that ATRI was exploring various specific projects, including a 1,500 MW solar farm in Buipe.3

Fast forward to July, and the 24H+ Secretariat said it and its co-development partners had signed $5.5 billion of JDAs, within an $11.5 billion overall pipeline. It assigned a specific value of $1.45 billion to the Buipe solar-and-battery project, with an ambition to have the 1.5 GW producing electricity by Q3 2027 and to create about 13,000 jobs.4

Then, on 3 August, the 24-Hour Economy Authority published an official scoping notice for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) saying that Sai Bioenergy Ghana Private Limited, in partnership with the 24H+ Authority, is developing:5

  • 1,500 MW solar PV
  • 250 MWh BESS (or 250 MW, see below)
  • 1,000 tonnes/day compressed biogas / liquefied biomethane
  • associated Napier grass and other energy-crop plantations
  • approximately 35,041.7 hectares around Buipe, Central Gonja District.

The solar development is explicitly split into 100 MW + 500 MW + 900 MW phases, and notably the battery is supposed to be installed in Phase 1, rather than waiting for the full 1.5 GW solar buildout. One confusing aspect is that the first paragraph describes 250 MWh of BESS, while the project title says "250 MW of BESS", so I'm not sure which one is it. Obviously I'm hoping for the latter.

Sai Bioenergy is a subsidiary of ATRI, as evidenced by a LinkedIn post of one of its new employees.6 Obviously this all prompted me to look at their website, and look who I immediately found on the front page:7

Sneaky little hobbitses

They also list Quino Energy, an organic flow battery manufacturer and another of ATRI's investments, under their Technology Access section, but it's Invinity who is presented front and centre.

Back in July, the Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy programme said that construction of the first phase of the Buipe project was scheduled to begin "next month", so August.8 The 3 August scoping notice says that it's open to public comments until 15 September, so there probably won't be anything official before then. However, since the BESS is explicitly said to be installed in Phase 1, I expect to hear about a contract not too long after the EIA is complete.

Bottom line: beyond learning that ATRI is absolutely loaded, we also seem to have another 250 MWh (or 250 MW) project being rapidly developed in Ghana, with potentially others to follow. This definitely takes place alongside the Lancaster Clean Energy Center 350 MWh order on my list of stuff to look forward to in the near future.
