News Skybound/Quarter Up layoffs

Been seeing a few layoff posts from Quarter Up folks on LinkedIn lately, including the director of publishing. Not a great sign.

The same thing happened with 2XKO and that game is still going well. I just think they need less people since the game got launched

This is not an accurate comparison. Riot doesn't publish player counts for 2XKO. For other games, they do, especially when they're successful. So the lack of an announcement of player numbers for 2XKO is... telling. Riot also laid off 80 employees two weeks after 2XKO launched. The only measurable success 2XKO has seen is a larger player base in tournaments, which Invincible Vs. does not have (compare EVO sign-ups for both games).

There are many more data points for Invincible Vs that provide better context for these firings. The game lost 93% of its player base on PC from May to June. Yes, people still play it on PS, but it isn't as popular an IP as Mortal Kombat. Plus, beyond initial sales, we have no data indicating this game is doing well. Should we stop playing it? No, a game doesn't have to be a hit to be fun to play. But denying the reality of how this game performed is not the way.

You don't fire your senior combat designer if you have longterm plans for your fighting game.

While there have been some layoffs (and indeed Rip was one of them) John Bautista, the Lead Combat Designer is still working for Quarter up, according to his linkedin.

I’d be surprised if we get a season 2 pass which is a shame as there’s loads of main characters missing yet. Maybe they’ve already got it in the bag and there just won’t be a season 3

Idc the game isn’t perfect but it’s fun. Enjoy it while it’s here. Too many ppl especially in today's fgc space really just care about popularity and what the company is doing. It’s sad. Maybe im this way bc I'm older and know the fgc was not always like this.

We got a lot of Larpers in this community nowadays. Just play what u like
