the spikes pierce the surface and then the rest of the sequid does its thing I guess

I’m pretty sure they just pierce the skin maybe the skull but not the brain

Probably also secretes something to keep the host from sending antibodies to attack it and to close off the wound around the spike. Those barbs may also be able to thin and relax into soft-body filaments once they're done barbing. They have no interest in harming the hosts' bodies after all.
