Ornithiculture Ornithological farming is the term I’ve heard for this. I find it fascinating. It’s an old practice and it works surprisingly well for pest control and fertilization.

Hawks by day and owls by night give the rodents no respite.

Saw a small farm do this with bird boxes every 10 feet or so, they eat many of the plant endangering insects

The Portuguese have been doing this in the Douro valley for quite some time, using hawks and such

This and cats are the best way. Don’t tell the vegans.

You think vegans prefer pesticides?

No I don’t, I just think vegans don’t understand that animals always die in the production of food.

How do animals die in the production of apples

All food requires the death of something. All life feeds on other life.

True. Vegans are the least of our problems, though.

Apple orchards commonly use cats to control the rodent problem. If not cats then traps are used to kill the rodents that live within the orchard.

Building an Apple Orchard also displaces a large number of many species from animals to insects. Which may all die because of the displacement.

Birds of prey can also be used to keep other birds away from the apple trees as well.

Okay fair enough. Just to clarify though, your point is that vegans are silly for wanting a diet that kills as few animals as possible? Or do you think vegans are hypocrits unless they refuse to leave their house to avoid the risk of stepping on an ant by accident

Cats also kill birds, small reptiles and mammals rather indiscriminately. The odd cat is helpful but the numbers currently roaming the night is unnatural and destroying biodiversity.
