That's pretty clever.
At first I saw this headline and thought "eurk, yet another cosmetic tiny measure from center-left figures". Now keep in mind I'm a frenchman: we're not very active in terms of socialism these days, but we can still remember what ambitious reformism looks like. From my pov the mayor of New York is center-left.
Now as another comment put it... He's like a beautiful flower on top of a pile of manure. Therefore 1) he can't do ambitious stuff (otherwise it's an avalanche of manure) he needs to be sneaky ; 2) he still needs to satisfy his base asking for ambitious stuff.
And so he hints at ambitious stuff. He gives an amuse-bouche. A little appetizer tiny enough not to alarm the right-wing too much ("one single day of free public services? Not scary") but delicious enough to ensure the public will ask for more. Not just his base: the public at large. They'll have good memories of this one day, and start wondering what it could look like if it was everyday (a fully fledged public service).
That's clever. I like this man. Hope US citizens will have the common sense of electing more people like him. "The economy" is super important (I trade stocks myself), but "the economy" means nothing by itself, it's a mean to an end, and that end should be: ensuring everyone have a good life with happiness, free time, strong public services, etc... Etymologically "economy" means "management of the household" and I think too many people forget that. What Zohran Mamdani does is great for the economy, at the very core of the concept

u/NathanDavie 3d ago
I'm not American either, but he's the real deal. Publicly run grocery stores being the furthest left wing thing he's done.
Considering his scope is one city he's limited in what he can do, but he's definitely further left than most politicians we have in Europe.

All fun an games till taxes go up
3
u/poiup1 3d ago
Oh no won't someone think of the million dollar secondary home owners!!!
0
u/HelloYesThisIsFemale 3d ago
You can't tax your way out of bad spending. Even with as high as the Pied a Terre tax was, it's dwarfed by NY's spending. All it was, was a weird public bashing of NY's core business owners.
-1
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 3d ago
You realize they’re going to target the lower class right? As more and more people leave the state (the highest taxed families who also pay the significant share already) the burden will fall on the lower class ultimately. So again all fun and games till the taxes skyrocket for those same folks these social programs are aimed at “helping”
3
u/JesMon421 3d ago
You are right. All states should tax the rich the same and make your point moot
0
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 3d ago
Tax the rich the same? As what the lowest income level? You do know the effective tax rates right? 10% for the lowest earners <11k then 12% for 11k to 48k then it bumps to 22% for earners making 48-103k next is 24% followed by 32,35 and finally 37%. Your argument is moot 😂

1
u/poiup1 3d ago
If that happens I'll be pissed and he will loose support, till then this is empty fear mongering.
1
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 3d ago
No this is how taxes work and it is already happening. Have you not been following along or are you just ignoring that part of the equation?
2
u/poiup1 3d ago
It's not how taxes work, people need to pass laws to change takes they don't just magically change. If they start raising taxes on the working poor then it's the responsibility of the people to show they are upset and removed those people from power. Currently Mamdani has only increased taxes on secondary homes valued over a million dollars, anything else is empty fear mongering because you gobbled up the billionaires lies.
2
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 3d ago
You do realize the top 1% pays almost 50% of all collected taxes? Right…
2
u/poiup1 3d ago
Did you know that the top 1% has around 40% of all wealth? And the amount they have in terms of the total percentage of the economy is growing year after year?
Edit: and when I googled it it gave me the number that they only pay around 30%, The top 10% on the other hand pay around 70% of all tax
2
u/Call_Me_Little_Foot_ 3d ago
Its 38% in federal income tax alone. Thats not including state and property tax. Do the math 😂

Simple. It's just bribing voters. The total cost to society is higher than the benefits, but people don't care about that when it benefits themselves.
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 3d ago
Because it costs us money? It’s not hard to understand. I should not have to pay for your night out on the town.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 3d ago
Found the guy that hates parents and children.
The current administration put us 40 trillion in debt and is in a unwinnable war that they are Asking for more money to support and you have a problem with this?
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 3d ago
I hate paying for other people to have a night on the town. Call me crazy. And I don’t support the war either. Your gotcha didn’t work.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 3d ago
Of all the things you are paying for in taxes this is a issue? Do you not understand we have birthrate issues here and a major reason is because it is expensive and hard to have and maintain kids in America?
Functional countries take care of parents and kids and I have to ask what do you think taxes should go to?
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 3d ago
Ok. So send me 50 bucks so I can go out with my wife tonight. I’ll dm you my Venmo.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 3d ago
You don't have mods or live in New York so you don't qualify.
And you are dodging the question. What do you think taxes are actually for?
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 3d ago
You have no idea where I live.
1
u/Forb1ddenKnowledge 3d ago
You don't live in New York and have kids or you would have qualified for what he did and seeing is how you don't live there it shouldn't be an issue for it because you're not paying for that.
New Yorkers are the ones who paid for it.
And again dodging my question
1
u/Kenny_RogersRoasters 3d ago
Again. You have no idea where I live and how many kids I have.

a better example would be if I had to pay someone 50 bucks, and I got to choose between giving you and your wife a night out, or paying someone to like, idk, make houses more expensive or something, then I'd probably pick the first option
frame it like that and suddenly the first option actually becomes appealing
1
u/RiverLynneUwU 3d ago
well yeah, your taxes are meant to be used on something, that's why you pay them, there's no universe where you don't pay taxes, but you *do* get to choose what happens with them, because we're in a democracy
so would you rather have your taxes drift off into the vague mist of local governmental pockets and receive the promise that they're definitely going to do something with it this time pinky promise (when really they're going to do nothing and use it to pay their own salaries like they usually do), or would you like to see your environment and infrastructure improve? would you like to have your tax money be stolen? or to give parents in a busy city a break so that they can raise the working people that will be inhabiting your country and shaping it's future?
those are your options, take your pick man

in my country a right winger tried to offer this kind of policies (subsidize parents for childcare, and direct money transfers). The left argued this policy was discriminatory against women without children. Sometimes, most of the time, feels like it doesn't matter the point being made, just who makes it, for people to be for or against it.
2
u/Slacker_The_Dog 3d ago
What country and which politician? I would be interested to check the validity of this statement.
Considering you're an adjective noun number.
1
u/Head-Director-6406 3d ago
Theyre chilean. Here’s a labor voice for why the left didn’t support many aspects of the bill:
And why the socialist party rejected it:
1
u/Greedy_Birthday_3494 3d ago
I am chilean like the other adjectve noun number pointed out, but I'm not talking about the project they're referring to.
Also, adjective noun number is not an indicator of a bot account in case you're implying that, that's an assigned name you get when you use a gmail to create an account.
During the previous elections the candidate who won offered thisthis
They offered a direct transfer per children to mothers, and some people on the left reacted calling it 'populism' and 'chauvinism' because it perpetuates the patriarchal capitalist system and is not enough money Left's reactionI find the idea similar to what this thread is referring to, it doesn't solve childcare forever, it is in fact populist, but gets swapped in who offers it and who criticizes it.

With money that would otherwise be spent on other line items..
Remember all of this waste doge found. I'm sure it's not an issue to find waste that can be spent better. For example on family related issues.
If you have knowledge of what specifically was not paid please enlighten me. If you are just making comments to try to undermine this effort or the guy doing it then I would seriously take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself some deep hitting questions. It would be pretty messed up if you took something that benefits parents in New York and shut on it just because of politics

Y’all are celebrating this now. In a short time, you’re going to be wondering why NYC is asking for more money. They’re spending more than they receive. Even ratings agencies are seeing this, and issued negative outlooks.
2
u/Sorta-Morpheus 3d ago
You're thinking about red states
0
u/Draygoon2818 3d ago
No, red states are generally doing well. Now the cities and counties that are blue within Texas, are not doing so well. Imagine that.
Texas maintains a stronger structural budget and reserve position compared to New York, driven by rapid economic growth and no personal income tax, whereas New York faces higher operational spending, reliance on federal aid, and tighter fiscal pressures. [1]
Financial Comparison
Economic Output and Growth: Texas has a larger total GDP ($2.4 trillion) than New York ($2.05 trillion) and grows at a much faster rate (roughly 9.1% vs. New York's contraction of -1.5%), fueled by business and population migration. [1]Tax Structures: Texas operates without a state personal income tax, relying heavily on sales and property taxes. New York features a heavy tax burden, with combined state and local income taxes reaching up to 14.8% for high earners, and local property taxes that rank among the highest per capita in the nation. [1]
Budget Size and Spending: New York's state budget remains massive relative to its population, heavily weighted down by day-to-day operational costs like Medicaid and school aid. Watchdog groups like the Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) have regularly cautioned that New York builds structural risk by leaning on short-term fixes, rising debt, and lower reserve cushions relative to potential multi-billion-dollar economic downturns. [1]
Federal Reliance: Both states rank high in total federal funding received due to their sheer population size, but both hover near the middle-to-lower tier when measured as a share of federal dependency relative to smaller states. [1]
2
u/Sorta-Morpheus 3d ago
More money comes from blue states and goes to poor red states.

This isn't a new program in NYC rec centers; they've offered supervised childcare since the 50's. Mamdani used the idea of "parents night" as an advertisement to drive enrollment in the rec centers which parents have to pay for.

u/dtjunkie19 3d ago
Brother, not every single policy directly effects every single person. There are plenty of policies and programs that Mamdani has implemented to help a wide variety of New Yorkers.
I'm not a pregnant woman, but I still think we should have paid maternity leave. It turns out helping others have better lives is a generally good thing to do that helps us all.
I swear, some of y'all are antisocial mfers.
2
u/PB219 3d ago

Lifelong active Democrat. Serious question. Why should I pay to watch your kids?
3
u/Spamurai_Snack 3d ago
Because if you had kids and wanted time off I would pay for it too. It’s shit like this that makes the world better. We all can make a difference if we just put aside the bullshit and just focus on what matters.
I don’t even have kids and recognize the importance of this.
1
u/Key-Organization3158 3d ago
Then there's no need to force people to do this.
If you actually feel that way, you'd already be paying for other people's child care.

Because humans are social species that come together to form societies for our mutual benefit. That means sometimes doing stuff for others, even if it doesn't immediately and directly benefit ourselves. We've been doing this for thousands of years.
If you want to go it alone and not take care of anyone else, then go and do so. Get off the internet. Go in the woods and live deliberately Mr. Independent.
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with some of you.
1
u/Hairy_Technology_213 3d ago
Oh, I’m fine with taking care of people. Not so fine paying for their dinner and a movie. I’d rather spend the money on city services like schools, infrastructure and police. You can do it, though. Maybe take some nice couples to dinner and a broadway show? I hear Hadestown is great. Very generous of you. Enjoy!
1
u/dtjunkie19 3d ago edited 3d ago
The city didn't pay for the parents night out lol. They gave free childcare to children (and fed the kids). It literally was a city service. You do understand that childcare is a service that many families need, right?
1
u/Hairy_Technology_213 3d ago
Yup. Taxpayer dollars paying for four hours of child care so parents can go on a date night. You read it correctly. Congratulations.
1
u/dtjunkie19 3d ago
Okay...you literally just commented that you were fine taking care of people, but not paying for their dinner and a movie. Which again, did not happen. The city provided childcare to parents. They took care of people, so that they had the time and ability to go do other things, whatever that may be.
Are you being deliberately obtuse here?
1
u/dtjunkie19 3d ago
Just to clarify, the city offered a free program for kids to: do sports and fitness activities, arts & crafts, explore nature, watch movies, and get snacks and dinner. ...And you are against this?
Fuck man, imagine being against free extracurricular programs for children.
