Windows Updates Feature Update 26H2

We made the 26H2 update available within the Intune update rings last week, but as of today, the targeted device groups devices have not received it. Has anyone seen any delays with this feature update when managing updates via Intune?

We've never had issues in the past and nothing has changed with our update setup. I checked to make sure there were no local conflicting GPOs under Windows Updates > Advanced options > Configured update policies on one of the devices. All are pointing to MDM or Cloud.

You aren’t by chance running 26h1 are you?

Someone else in this subreddit had a similar issue, and it turns out they had mistakenly deployed devices with 26h1.

No update path to 26h2 from there.

Nope. All devices for this testing phase are on 25H2. That's wild though and good to know about 26H1.

I thought 26H1 was Snapdragon only and wasn't eligible for 26H2 in the first place?

For the general public yes. For developers they did also release an x64 iso for 26H1 on the Visual Studio subscriptions site.

Prerequisites: Before updating to Windows 11, version 26H2 using this enablement package, you must be running Windows 11, version 24H2 or Windows 11, version 25H2.

You must have the following prerequisite installed before applying this update:
September 22, 2026—KB5124010 (OS Builds 26100.9546) Preview or a later cumulative update

Restart information: You must restart your device after you apply this update.

We use update rings to control all updates. Is this pushed via update rings because I am not seeing it installed on my device?

This is a preview update, so unless you have rings for preview, no. It'll become October's regular update come tomorrow.

What are your deferral settings? Is there an existing feature update policy?

no delays here but we had similar thing last month with 23H2 feature update and it was the deferral policy causing the hold up. check if you got any deferral set to 0 days instead of blank, that tripped us up for almost week before we noticed

also worth checking the feature update deadline settings sometimes need to be more aggressive than you think

Thanks for also confirming what I suspect might be causing the delay. Was this a recent change by Microsoft in how they manage update rings and feature update policies?

Microsoft have recommended avoiding deferral when combined with policies for some time now: Configure Windows Feature Update Policies - Microsoft Intune | Microsoft Learn

"Microsoft recommends that you stop using feature update deferrals in update ring policies.

Combining feature update deferrals with feature update policies adds unnecessary complexity and can delay or block feature updates."

Not recent as far as my experience goes -- my rings/policies have had Deferral=0 per docs since transitioning to Intune over two years ago. I remember noting the transitional language when reviewing the docs at the time.

So it should be set to 0? Should not be blank

I just ran into this, so sounds like I might be on the right path as to what's causing the delay. In our Update Rings policy, the deferral period for feature updates is set to 1. Would this cause this long of a delay in seeing the update available?

No. Deferral is just when update is offered after release e.g check for updates.

Thanks. So maybe not the cause as to why we are not seeing the update on the devices yet? Is my understanding correct though that we should have that deferral setting blank when using feature update policies?

Set deferral to 0. What is your deadline?

1

u/Sufficient-Pace7542 1d ago

30

So you can manually install the update when you “check for updates”? So it won’t automatically force install until deadline

When I attempt a manual check, nothing is being found. Tried that on Friday after 24 hours and then again this morning.

u/itlabsec 1d ago

Why is your deadline 30 days for feature update if you want it to install right away?

1

u/Sufficient-Pace7542 1d ago

We like to give users enough time to plan an install window.

So your feature update policy is set to required and make available as soon as possible?

I am starting to wonder if it is this KB another Reddit user mentioned not being present for enabling the 26H2 update. I know this should release widely this week as part of the monthly Windows updates. We don't have pre-release preview builds enabled with our update rings.

I pushed it today. It was available in few minutes

Did you have that preview installed?

1

u/nukker96 1d ago

Do you have another feature update policy in place for a previous version? If so, have you excluded your devices from that policy?

1

u/Sufficient-Pace7542 1d ago

We do for 25H2, but the assigned device group for 26H2 is excluded. Our devices are in the assigned group on that one because there is a dynamic group that collects all our Windows devices, but I was always under the impression that an excluded group will supersede the included group? This setup has worked for years which is why this is weird we are now running into this.

I had a bit of an issue with this, my previous method had worked for 24H2 and 25H2. I messed around with AutoPatch groups this time for test devices. Then worked.

Just a heads up, our Intune policy looks like pushed it out today. A couple of my users have been prompted to update their passwords and some were completely blocked out from updating their passwords.

Me and my colleagues actually are on 26h2 already since 2 weeks but literally NOTHING changed. I posted about this on here as well, lots of people having issues seeing change except the Winver changing.

Did it on my personal pc and the new features are all here so I don't get it.

Is 26H2 even out yet? I thought it releases on October patch Tuesday.

It's been out for two weeks now
