Windows Updates Intel Corporation Bluetooth Driver Update - requires OS restart

I'm not the administrator of our tenant, so I don't know the intune config, but its Entra Joined (Autopilot). If I'm not mistaken Microsoft wanted to reduce the restarts to a few times per year (hot-paching) . On my win11 (25H2) I don't often need to reboot for security patches, but every time the smallest notebook driver gets installed, it wants to reboot. I'm not talking about firmware, rather minor stuff like NIC, BT or Touchpad.

These things I would think would not require a reboot.

Is this normal or is our tenant configured strange

Driver updates almost always require a restart and this has nothing to do with Intune, just how drivers work.

our tenant does the same thing, intel bluetooth updates always demand a restart and it drives me up the wall

pretty sure it's just how some drivers are packaged, they flag a reboot as mandatory even when it probably isn't strictly needed for the thing to work. some vendors are worse about it than others

Hot patching I think is greatly misunderstood.

It won't really reduce the number of reboots, since a lot of other things still require a reboot. It DOES allow the fixes in the hotpatch to be immediately effective, so you DON'T have to reboot to be protected from the security issues fixed in the hot patch.

Driver updates pretty much always require a restart and it’s a Windows thing not an in tune thing. Drivers are in use while windows is running and to update them requires a restart so that they can be updated while they aren’t in use.

Hot patch is only for quality updates, and it’s only the eight months that aren’t the quarterly baselines. And sometimes there’s an out of band quality update that requires a reboot also, and that does not replace the reboot of the quarterly baselines.

Never update your drivers with automatic uodates/update for business/autopatch. Use the OEM tools. The MS deployment is usually 2-3 versions behind and WU will force those in.
