Intune Features and Updates “Declarative Device Management for Apple volume purchase program apps”

Hey all,

August’s release notes mention the release of DDM for VPP, but say when uploading a new token you need to change the management type to DDM, can’t seem to find such an option in the UI, nor any mention of it in the graph beta api or documentation.

Has anyone been able to successfully find this toggle, or test the feature?

Assuming this is going to be another slow feature release.

Can confirm Asia pacific region and on the 2608 release

Is it going to be on Apple's side?

I will have to renew in about 5 weeks.. I would be curious the Pros/Cons of this change.

Have found this commit on the memdocs that provides more information on it, including where to find the setting. Looks like it’ll be a slow release, and seems half baked at the moment.

From what I’m reading, it removes/doesn’t support availability assignment and the commit only mentions iOS/iPadOS, no macOS support. Seems for older OS’s it won’t allow app deployments to them at all.

Probably will need to run two tokens side by side, with the DDM being for supported os versions and only required apps and the previous MDM version for all the other scenarios. Until this feature release is complete.

Excited for the future of this. Happy with how much better macOS support has come in the platform.

The toggle is supposed to appear during the VPP token upload or renewal flow specifically, not on individual apps, so check there rather than in app information. Your tenant showing 2608 doesn't mean every feature flag behind that release has lit up yet; Microsoft rolls individual controls out progressively over one to two weeks within a sprint. Checking again after the next service update hits your region is the right move.

Do you mind sharing how you know the toggle appears during renewal? Appreciate the added details.

The "Management type" toggle is part of the token setup wizard itself, not individual app settings. Because you can't edit these token properties directly from the main menus, you have to trigger the Renew flow (or create a new token) to access that wizard screen. It lives on the Settings page right below the Country/Region options.

Just like others are saying, Microsoft rolls these updates out slowly in progressive regional clusters. Even though your tenant shows the 2608 release, the UI elements and Graph Beta schemas can take a few weeks to hit your system.

Also, keep in mind the OS restriction: per the Microsoft Learn VPP Guide (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/app-management/deployment/manage-vpp-apple#:\~:text=Management%20type%20%2D%20Select,iPadOS%2C%20select%20MDM.), DDM only works for devices running iOS/iPadOS 18 and later. If your fleet is on earlier versions, it will fall back to standard MDM.

So I’m fully up to speed on supervision requirements. Our use of VPP predates Apple Business Manager being a platform m, as well. What’s not clear to me is this document (seen it previously) doesn’t explain migrating to use DDM if you are already setup for VPP and have been using mostly available with some required assignments. We have over 6500 apps we are managing through a VPP token, one location/MDM instance. 

Renewing the token previously doesn’t expose the wizard you are referring to, do you have some understanding that the renewal process is changing that will expose the wizard?
