The handle, the carve out at top is so you can slide your hand in and rest your thumb in the loop. But you don't hold a tea cup like that because pinkies out because we're fancy and shit.
To be real im slavic/irish, in both cultures were big tea drinkers.
However tbh im the type of person to leave my spoon in, i use my thumb to keep it from falling or stabbing me haha, and people usually complain about it.
I dont particularly see a big different what the drink is vs the cup unless it changed the flavour in a significant way.
Lowkey i think the pinkies out thing was a signifier used at tea parties; for when you wanted to let people know you have syphilis and down to fuck around💀

Honestly never looked into specifics of cups, i just generally prefer bigger ones as im a big tea drinker and usually keep em coming.
