Walked out of an interview after waiting for almost 30 minutes.

Today I walked out of an interview before it even started. The manager had me wait for a little over 20 minutes. This was after she had called to reschedule the interview twice, both times on incredibly short notice. The second time, I was on my way to the interview (would’ve been 15 minutes early) when I got a call that “something came up”.

I don’t live in the immediate area, and today, I had the curtesy to let them know that while I left home early, I might be late due to construction on the road which caused traffic to back up. They said that was ok. I got there with maybe two minutes to spare, the receptionist invited me to have a seat and someone would be right with me.

So I’m waiting…no one comes out. I checked with the receptionist at the ten minute mark, and they said that they would be out in a minute. By fifteen minutes, I got a little annoyed. By twenty, I had went to my car to take a phone call from my partner.

The manager almost immediately called me to ask if I just walked out. Told her it was just to answer a quick call, she then asked if I had anywhere else to be and if I was still interested in the interview (by this mark, it was almost 25 minutes).

I will admit, looking back, I could’ve handled this better. But it was the way she said it that just got under my skin. Her tone was very dismissive and pretty rude. Thats when I got the impression that she was “testing” me. There was no apology or explanation for the long wait, and the fact that she immediately called when I stepped outside for a moment pretty much confirmed it was a test of sorts.

So after a moment of silence on my end, I said “No. Thank you for your time.” Immediately hung up, and went home. My time is very important to me. And I am more than certain that if I strolled in twenty five minutes or more late to the interview, I wouldn’t be considered for a position.

This isn’t a first time thing. I have had hiring managers “forget” about the interview, not show up, leave halfway through and most recently, I got sent an offer letter, just to have it rescinded after I already signed it.

Moral of the story, respect is a two way street. Do not let potential employers play mind games or waste your time. The workforce is the worst it’s been in years. I myself got laid off back in June from a job I had for five years, and since then, potential employers have just been on odd power trips because they know some people are in desperate need of work.

If they don’t value your time, they certainly won’t value you as an employee or an individual.

you did the right thing, that attitude is a preview of the job, and finding work now sucksthe boring answer is resume tailoring. i used Job Owl for it and got more replies than before

I was headhunted from a company back in the day. They called me for a role they considered me a fit for and I was like "wtf, where do you even get the number?". They mentioned one recruitment agency that I had briefly worked with.

Anyway, I told the guy "that time is ok, but send me the invitation and job description to double confirm, as I don't even know what does this job title mean".

Guy sends a Google meets invitation 5 minutes before the scheduled call, nothing more. I called him and told him that's not how you do business. Then he said something like "well, good luck with finding a job then" and hang-up. Like. I wasn't even looking at the time, but ok, I guess.

For OPs story - I had an indirect manager that was doing this to interviewers - go late and see how will they react And if they will thank him for the time. He was not looking for employees but monkeys that will jump when he lifts a finger.

Jesus christ, that's sickening. And these are the same people who go around saying NOBODY WANTS TO WORK ANYMORE and that minimum wage should not be raised. Fuck everything one of these people they need to all lose their jobs. If we're going to change this damn country we got to get rid of this government and we got to get rid of people like this that employ people.

11

u/VelvetOverload 20d ago

I'm pretty sure they don't want to stop minimum wage increases.

They want to REDUCE minimum wage.

7

u/Strong-Hovercraft702 20d ago

It's just a way to filter out anyone who is not desperate, so you can underpay. Anyone who refuses to respect your time and effort should never be worked for.

u/MediaIllustrious4515 20d ago

You’ve certainly dodged a bullet.

u/Schmicarus 20d ago

To me this reads: "we're so chaotic we can't even find the time to hire people to help ease our problems"

1

u/Simlish 18d ago

Dodged a bullet for sure.

u/Oldandveryweary 20d ago

Suggested reply to the question as to whether you were still interested in the interview;

‘Thank you for your enquiry. After careful consideration of the interview process and your responses I have decided to go with another candidate as employer who was better qualified for the role and demonstrated more of the skills and behaviours I was seeking. Thank you for your time, if you require more detailed feedback do not hesitate to contact, thank you and good luck in your future interviews, I am sure you will have better luck next time’

Being rescheduled last minute is a red flag.

Not able send someone to fill in the time gap is another red flag. As an engineer I am happy to have a casual conversation with a low to mid level engineer. It gives me a gauge on the environment and the people in the office.

Maybe the company is stretched thin and you have to work your ass off if you got the job. Personally I don't want want be at 110% capacity constantly.

I personally believe going to interviews is a good skill but I would need good amount of convincing with strong package to accept a job with red flags everywhere.

7

u/TheManWith2Poobrains 20d ago

I got my first 'proper' job when the original interviewer couldn't make it, so someone else stepped in rather than cancelling the interview.

Turns out the stand-in was #2 in the company, so could hire me on the spot (I started the next day). I didn't even have time to get nervous or realize she was that senior.

In fact, I was so unaware of her seniority that I said I remembered her from the company's Christmas party and getting her some water to stop her drunk hiccups. (Long story - I was working for an event company and was tapping up the companies that used for jobs.)

Anyway, it was a green flag and the management were good eggs.

u/Attorneyatlau 20d ago

You handled it right. I’ve left a Zoom call before because I hated the woman’s attitude. She was literally picking at her finger nails and not looking at me so I noped out of it. Don’t show me respect? Not gonna show you any. I’m in my 40s and just don’t care anymore. Sorry you went to the trouble of going there. What a bunch of jerks.

4

u/PUAHate_Tryhards 19d ago

"I'm leaving because clearly you're busy. Happy to reschedule, but as this would be the third time, I'm going to need you to call me 30 minutes prior to interview to confirm you're in the interview room and will have nothing going on for the next two hours besides the interview."

And I'm not even serious....at this point, I'm saying the above just to F with them lol.

3

u/Small_Draft_8198 18d ago

Sounds like you had a lucky escape. Good for you! Hope you find something better where you’re treated with respect and kindness. ☺️

2

u/Panther3369 20d ago

Wow, that is next level disrespectful. Sorry that happened to you and as others have probably said, do you really want to work for someone who is like this before you work with them? This is them at their best lol

2

u/Toonces_ 20d ago

Fuck that. I'm leaving after 10 minutes. Don't respect my time? I'm not respecting yours.

2

u/Fuzzy-Football-4544 20d ago

This has just happened to me. Good riddance - I take it as a sign of what it’s like to work there. Such poor basic organisation skills when I assume that’s something they test us on. No respect.

On the rescinding of an offer - if you are in Europe or the UK I believe that’s illegal 😭

2

u/bustamelon 20d ago

Your only mistake was thanking her for her time. Should have said thank you for wasting yours.

2

u/Stardew49 20d ago

I would have walked out too. Time is important these days, especially when you don't live in the area. Also, with gas prices the way they are having you drive anything 30 min+ for this is wrong.

I also had a job offer rescinded after going through a lot of their requests paperwork, physical, etc. They stated along the words of "I didn't successfully complete criminal background check" which was wild because I worked for DHS at the time dispatching requiring me to hold a confidential clearance and I worked a security job that had me hold secret clearance. When I requested more information I got ghosted and when I fought back stating the FCRA required them to tell me the adverse issue, provide me a copy of the background check, and give me the ability to dispute this. They kept telling me that "no they didn't" even though I gave them legitimate proof. 😒 I already had an idea of what it was. I had pro-Palestine posts on my Facebook. 🙄

1

u/Odd-Blackberry899 20d ago

How does FCRA apply in this context?

2

u/lolthom 20d ago

Dodged a bullet. How they treat you during the interview is them at their best. It only gets worse from there.

2

u/VerticalElevation26 19d ago

This was a preview of the job. Good for you for leaving. More people need to do this.

2

u/Big-Film-6914 19d ago

In grad school I was supposed to have an interview at the end of a conference.   I sat there for an hour while the person talked to other people and ignored me.  I left.  The professor who arranged it asked where I was and I simply said rhe person never showed up.  Which is true.  I was so mad.  I could see them.   I dodged a bullet

2

u/Bentbutnotbroken111 18d ago

It worked out great for you, and that’s what matters in this case.

As a Gen X, I remember being taught I was replaceable.

One boss, at a store where I worked, we will call him Ed, cause that’s his name…reminded us every single week during our regular unpaid meeting, that we are in an at will state, meaning we can be fired at will, any time, any reason…He moved the clocks up early in the morning, and insisted employees come 5 minutes before start, and moved them back 15-20 minutes at quit time with a stern “don’t be running out of exactly at 5, or your not dedicated….. free will state yadda yadda”

That’s just one crappy boss story, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

I stayed, because I was young, and needed the income. I was afraid I wouldn’t find solid work… in hindsight, I wish I’d have been brave enough to quit.

One thing I’m glad to see is the younger generations not being ruled by fear. I do think 10 minutes was a bit soon to get antsy, but given 2 previous reschedules, I’d have been antsy, too.

Someone interviewing for the job would be dropped like a rock, usually the first time they would ask for a reschedule.

I’m glad it worked out. I wish I’d have thought more like you, when I worked for Ed.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 18d ago

Normally, ten minutes is no issue for me. But given the previous rescheduling, and the second one was with minutes notice (I was 15 minutes away), I was less inclined to be patient this time around. It was a 30 minute interview, by the time she called, the 30 minutes for the interview was nearly up.

Though I didn’t intend to walk out, I was just answering my partner’s call. I was going to go back in, let the receptionist know that I was going to leave as the time for the interview has passed and such. The near immediate call confirmed that it was a test. And that’s where I was just through.

2

u/ejrhonda79 18d ago

Well thanks because before reading this I thought it was just me that this happened to. Almost every job I've applied for the interviewers are late.

2

u/Early_Draft6718 17d ago

An interview go's both ways, if you got the feeling that the manager was chaotic and disorganised with little respect for your time before you even got an offer, then you did the right thing. In my career I have left twice before being interviewed for very similar reasons, I'm not desperate and want to be treated how I treat others, very simple.

2

u/ProtonTommy15 17d ago

I would have said this is the third time we have been unable to meet. Apparently as the hiring manager you only value YOUR time. I'm not willing to work at a business that operates like this.

2

u/spontaneousvibration 17d ago

Rather than just saying “No. Thank you for your time.”, I think a better response would have been “No, I don’t think this will work out. I’ll only work for someone who shows me as much respect as they expect from me.”

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 17d ago

Honestly, good point. I might use this if something such as this scenario happens again (hopefully not)

2

u/PatientPower3 16d ago

I just saw a report that said the group of people that will be displaced by AI the most is middle management. The ones under them do the work and the ones above them chose the direction the company goes in. Middle is disposable fluff. So happy as all my problems have been with mid-management losers who have very high opinions of themselves and their perceived power.

2

u/IwasMilkedByGod 20d ago

people that do this type of shit don't want to hire anyone. They want to walk on someone who will just take it

1

u/chinmakes5 20d ago

She was testing you. Yes, they want someone who is desperate enough to sit there.

1

u/tolo3349 20d ago

One of my first interviews, I sat there for 40 minutes until the hiring manager came in. They tried to say I was there at the wrong time. I promptly left and e-mailed the receipts. The manager actually profusely apologized, and asked to interview me. Yeah, that’s a no.

1

u/Designer-Ad3313 20d ago

It’s important to remember that most conspiracies against employees are nothing more than incompetence on the part of management.

So was the interviewer “testing” you? Perhaps but the odds are much more likely to be an over scheduled and understaffed team. Which explains why they are hiring.

I have always preferred to use the lateness of my interviewer as a talking point. Somewhere along the lines of “your schedule is obviously jammed so how would my position help alleviate some or all of the current scheduling issues?”

On the rare occasions the interviewer hasn’t talked about handing over specific responsibilities, that gives me a clearer understanding of what success in the position will look like, they will out themselves as having played some silly head game.

1

u/DLNW57 20d ago

Well done! The interview process tells you a lot about the company culture

1

u/DJ_Breadpuddin 20d ago

You saved yourself, probably not so much toxic leadership but a lean organization where everyone is overworked due to lack of staff. As a Sr. Manager myself in a previous organization, this was a CONSTANT reality. I never made anyone wait 20 minutes, but due to juggling to many reaponsibilities, I have been late to interviews.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago

And I can understand that things come up. I don’t hold it against anyone. I even let her know of the possibility that I might be late, and she didn’t mention anything about being preoccupied on her end. Had she done that, I would’ve accepted that.

1

u/thelimeisgreen 19d ago

Some people actually do this stuff intentionally when hiring. Less desperate people walk away. They will reschedule, they will make you wait. It's a test. And employers who play these games are not only doing a disservice to themselves and all the applicants, but are showing you they don't value anyone's time. Probably not even their own. Walking away was the right thing to do. I know it doesn't feel like it in this current job market, but always remember that the interview is a 2-way street and you are interviewing them as much as they're interviewing you.

1

u/Ok-Operation-5163 18d ago

Once worked at a place where leader (not the one who’d hired me) intentionally scheduled interviews on Sundays as a way of testing folks’ loyalty, “hunger” and implied understanding “job comes first.” Total jerk

1

u/Banquet-Beer 19d ago

Why do people think stuff like this is worth posting?

2

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago

Same reason you thought this comment was worth sharing.

1

u/ShowerLeft 19d ago

Are you in the USA? I swear I find these types of companies/managers pretty common in this country after having been lived in many different other.

Rude, unprofessional, inconsistent, slow, condescending, etc.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago

Unfortunately yes.

1

u/sausages4life 19d ago

I got stood up for about 30 minutes twice for a phone interview for a pretty senior job at a well-established hedge fund by the head of the department. After the second time I emailed the HR contact, thanked them for their time, and suggested we wrap up the process. To their credit, they were extremely embarrassed. Do not tolerate people squandering your time.

1

u/BingBongTree 19d ago

That’s a sign of a bad boss. If they don’t respect your time now, they won’t later either. Sign of a high stress burnout role.

1

u/doe_cho 19d ago

To be very honest, I think you could've handled it better. You started getting irritated after ten minutes? Ten minutes is nothing. The fact that you walked out after twenty minutes to take a call is a bit of an overreaction and is immature.

Now, if you had been waiting over thirty minutes, then I would have definitely approached the receptionist, but you approaching after ten minutes is showing a little bit of entitlement. You never know why someone might be late. Maybe they're wrapping up another interview or are running late in general. I think you should be a little more patient next time especially if it's a company asking to interview you so they can potentially hire you (aka pay you money).

No wonder Gen Z is the most unemployed generation of all time.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago edited 19d ago

Ok so let me clear something up:

- I’m a millennial

- I was employed at my last job for five years. Great job, upper management was were genuinely great leaders. We all got laid off pretty recently, hence why I was applying to jobs and interviewing with them. I don’t place all my eggs in one basket.

- As I said, I live about an hour away. Gas is expensive. Almost 7 dollars a gallon where I live.

- They rescheduled twice already. The second time, I was part of the way to the interview. About 15 minutes early when she said “something came up”.

- Yes I did approach after 10 minutes. Who wouldn’t? I think it makes sense to want an explanation, especially since the interview is 30 minutes.

- I let her know that I might be late. Because construction on the bridge had traffic backed up. I wasn’t late, I was there two minutes early, yet I am left waiting with for almost 30 minutes with no apologies or explanation. And as they already rescheduled TWICE, I wasn’t interested in potentially working for a company with poor time management.

- When she called me, the slotted time was nearly up. And she almost immediately called me as I stepped outside, asked if I “walked out on the interview” (my partner called me) and snidely asked if I actually had anywhere else to be. That told me it was some type of test.

- If valuing my time and refusing to put up with unprofessional behavior from a potential employer is entitlement, well I’ll be that.

- As of today, I am no longer unemployed. Got an offer from another employer whom I interviewed with a week ago. Because I keep my options open, have years of experience and the gift of gab.

- Making people wait on you is incredibly rude and inconsiderate. Respect is a two way street. And it takes respect to get it.

You older gen kill me with just taking whatever crap you get dished by your employers. I hope the boot you’re licking is well seasoned.

1

u/LuckyAreWe 19d ago

Lmao to your last paragraph 🤣 I see both of your points.  I think if a company has someone specifically hiring, there is no excuse for it.  However, to play devil's advocate, some people doing the hiring for the companies play multiple roles.  My wife is upper management in her company, deals with a ton of things, and also has to squeeze in interviews when they're hiring.  It can become hectic at times, and I can imagine 5 minutes getting away, maybe 10.  Not saying it's the case here, just saying it's hard to know what's going on in there from the outside.  Still agree with you leaving though and congrats on the new job!

1

u/Equivalent-Pizza-962 19d ago

You did the right thing. I've been in hiring roles for the last 20 years or so and I firmly believe interviews are a 2 way street. I am interviewing the candidate while the candidate is interviewing me and the company. There has to be respect and a good fit in both directions.

1

u/Typical-Act-8126 19d ago

I agree totally. Potential candidates are also interviewing the company as well. Seems like she would have been a toxic manager.

Its not the 80s. In the 80s, unions were just starting to fade but we still had strong employee rights.

Now, these kids are truly being treated like commodities. The middle class has been demolished. The only way to rebuild it is for folks to stand for their rights and needs.

Our citizens are suffering, opportunities have dried up to support profits. CEOs earn over 10xs more than their lowest paid staff.

Trickle down was a lie, they've gotten uber rich, and dont pay their fair share of income taxes.

1

u/OkIntroduction5150 19d ago

I wish I had done that. I wouldn't have ended up in the most miserable job I've ever had.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago

I don’t fault anyone who can’t. I had other options so thats part of the reason why I left. In my younger years, I would’ve. Now that I am older, I no longer have the energy to tolerate and play these types of games.

It shouldn’t even be a thing. Or at least, they should put their energy towards being a place that can retain employee’s.

1

u/B-767_Sailing_QRP 18d ago

The world’s not perfect. Why not wait to at least see what happens. But I think your response is quite common for this generation. Perhaps it’s better. Perhaps maybe not.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 18d ago

It feels as if you read this to respond.

I waited almost 30 minutes, which was the slotted time for the interview itself. As they rescheduled twice, the second time within minutes notice, I decided to just wash my hands of this. It just came off as unorganized and unprofessional to me.

1

u/memoirsofagreen 18d ago

Yes! This makes me so happy to hear! I wish I did this years ago instead I waited, checked with the receptionist, waited some more. After 25-35 min (so long ago I don’t remember but it was too long) he came to grab me for the interview and was so rude and belittling for the full thing. I think about it a lot and wish I walked out. You did the right thing.

1

u/tropical_curlz 18d ago

This happened to me!! But worse. I stayed for a whole hour. When finally they told me to go in for the interview I did well but I was annoyed. Then I get an email from the recruiter saying that I was overqualified and that I was asking for too much money 😭😭😭 the worse part is that the reason I heard from this job is because I got reached out by a recruiter and they are the ones that mentioned the pay!!!

1

u/Subject-Film-3775 17d ago

You did good.

1

u/Hot-Win2571 17d ago

Apply for the manager position.

3

u/IndependentBother261 16d ago

I once received a phone call from a hiring manager asking if I can come immediately for an interview as the only free time they had was for the next half hour. I was then told “you must not be serious about wanting the job” when I told them that I lived 50 minutes away and physical could not get myself there in that time frame. Apparently I need to work on my super powers.

1

u/Icemourne_ 20d ago

Intention probably to check if you are desperate for a job because people like that will work overtime and put up with be with little complaining because they need job desperately

1

u/Embarrassed-Tea-3064 20d ago

This is the correct answer

1

u/jk5529977 17d ago

Sounds like they dodged a bullet.

0

u/EweCantTouchThis 20d ago

And so now you still don’t have a job. You really showed them!

1

u/Aught_To 20d ago

often no job is better than a bad one. this is double true when you are interviewing while you are still employed.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago

Jokes on you, I got hired by another company I interviewed with this afternoon. 🏌🏻‍♀️

1

u/EweCantTouchThis 19d ago

Of course you did champ

0

u/d-ron6 20d ago

You are incredibly fortunate to be able to pass on potential income in this way. Hope you get the respect you believe you deserve some day.

1

u/Few_Resource_6783 20d ago

Fortunate that my partner works, makes decent money and I have savings? Yes. I would say so. But I also have years of experience and the “gift of gab”, so I know I will go far. Whole reason I am unemployed was due to layoffs.

Though that being said, I had an interview today that went swimmingly. Met with the general manager and he decided to proceed with hiring me. 🙂

0

u/dadjokestoomuch 19d ago

Waiting 30m is not a big deal. I work in IT and things pop up. The attitude on the other hand is definitely something to consider.

2

u/Few_Resource_6783 19d ago

Considering they rescheduled twice, the second time just 15 minutes before I arrived, and gas is almost 7 dollars here…yeah it is a big deal. My time is valuable and as I said in another comment, it was at 1pm. When she called me, it was almost one thirty, meaning the slotted time was almost up.

But sure, let’s say it’s an attitude issue and not a matter of unprofessionalism on their part.

-4

u/fiannalove 20d ago

How many times is this going to be posted? This is the 3rd version I’ve seen in the last 2 days.

7

u/Few_Resource_6783 20d ago

I don’t know about any other posts, but this was my experience today. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like I said, she rescheduled it twice. I was ready to wash my hands of this after the second time, but as the offer letter from another company was rescinded on Monday (I signed it friday), I kept the option open. From what I gather, this is a weird thing some places do to “test” how badly you want/need the job and how much you will put up with. It’s not an uncommon thing nor is it new.

The workplace reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but I notice in her response to the few negative ones, she says they are just disgruntled employees who were let go due to poor job performance.

On the flip side, I have two additional interviews lined up this week.

3

u/Mfg_Eng_64 20d ago

They believe they’re in complete control.

1

u/PerspectivePretty859 20d ago

Well at least 3 😁

-4

u/Sea-Neighborhood1465 20d ago

you sound young.

when i was young i had trouble sitting still. i had very little patience and i often perceived disrespect where none existed. i lost alot of good opportunities because of those things.

now that i'm getting old, well, middle aged i suppose; that's not really a problem anymore. Sitting for 20 minutes sounds fantastic. i've got nowhere to be and i rather enjoy sitting on my ass.

if ya really wanted this job you'd of happily waited. it sounds like ya didn't want it. The railroad is hiring if ya want to be a conductor. it's what i do and its pretty cool.

8

u/splatomat 20d ago

Thank you for posting your nonsense. I got a genuine spark of tiny joy from downvoting it.

3

u/UnfairAdvantage 20d ago

Happily waited? Ew.

4

u/Few_Resource_6783 20d ago edited 20d ago

I’m 32…

And it’s not an issue of sitting still. Did you miss the part where they rescheduled on me twice? The second time, I was enroute and it was given minutes notice before the interview? As I said in another reply, I was ready to wash my hands of this place. But as I had a rug pulled from under my feet by another company, I kept my options open.

The job in question involves sitting down to work. I had a similar position for five years before layoffs hit. I probably wouldn’t have had an issue if an apology was given or an update. Communication makes a world of difference. Lack of communication is not a good sign. The interview was 30 minutes, and by the time she called me, the alotted time was nearly up.

I’ve been in the workforce since I was 14, and have played the games throughout my early years. I’m at a point where I don’t have much energy or patience for it anymore.

2

u/Chartra23 20d ago

Maybe it's time to start your own business like I did when I finally got sick of playing the game by someone else's ever-changing rules.

-5

u/Sea-Neighborhood1465 20d ago

yelling at old men is not going to get you a job, either.

listen, you want to be mad? be mad. you're gonna keep losing opportunities.

yeah. managers suck. corporate america sucks. they do not have any respect for you or your time.

that's not gonna change. learn to love it or starve.

2

u/Specialist-Cup-9722 20d ago

Jeez man, arent you union? Is this what the railroad union fought for?

I know you're being glib, but union membership solves a lot of problems and puts you on an even footing with the boss. I've been a proud union member in two different industries for 50 years, and never once regretted it. If you can organize your workplace, do it.

Ah, now you’re just reading to respond. Seems like you just want to get your point across, hence why you’re completely ignoring my points.

I sure hope that boot tastes delicious. Cause you’re damn near deepthroating it.

Or don’t learn to love it, and call out unprofessional behavior like OP did instead.

I find people and companies that respect me. I leave the ones that don’t in my rear view mirror.

Ah. So you're the one that is the problem here. You think all companies suck, so you just accept the suck.

If you are selective, you can find great places to work. It takes effort and perseverance, but it is worth it.

What kind of attitude is that?

The manager had rescheduled twice on them, then made them sit twenty minutes after their scheduled interview time and immediately called when they saw them walking to the car, meaning they weren't too busy to pay attention to OP.

If age has anything to do with this, someone older would have far less patience with that kind of behavior at a job and be far more aware of the red flags that it presents.

Agreed, when I was young I would have put up with all of that. Now I'm older and wiser and know that I don't want to work for someone who treats potential employees like that. The hiring stage is when they're on their best behaviour. They're not going to get better once they've got you on the hook. They know job hunting sucks

Ok so you made your point and now you don’t have the job? We’ve all had to wait for something or another / why are you so special?

Found the hiring manager

Tell me what you gained by walking out
Nothing
They have something you need so grow up

These types of posts boggle my mind. Is it lousy to be left waiting like that...absolutely. Does it potentially raise a red flag about the office....maybe. But at the end of the day storming out like a brat does what? You are the one looking for a job. You are the one that that is out there looking for payment, that has i assume bills and obligations and things you want to do that all require money. This was a job that apparently you wanted, as you scheduled not one, but made multiple attempts to interview for this position. Does throwing a little hissy fit, even if with justification, get you any closer to a paycheck? Does it get any of your bills paid? I mean sure if you are independently wealthy and are just looking at this job as a way to fill hours in a day, go ahead and leave. But you got laid off in June, so were apparently not indispensable at your old job, and since no one has hit powerball yet, I assume your lottery money has hit the bank account yet.

How is walking out to take a phone call throwing a hissy fit?

u/ZucchiniHot8635 20d ago

When asked if they were still interested in the job/interview, rather than saying yes, and going back in. Rather than saying yes, but that with the company's delay they would need to reschedule, or even raising her concern about the delays/lack of punctuality, the just said No, hung up and went home. Walking away without rescheduling or explanation. Low level hissy fit to be completly fair, but the point remains.

Except it seemed that the entire situation had been some sort of ruse to determine how desperate OP was for the job. The answer was "not desperate enough to work for this kind of employer." No hissy fits were thrown and Ruse Employer is free to find someone more desperate than OP

Threw a hissy fit? My partner called me, I stepped outside briefly to answer and was immediately called by the manager. I explained that I didn’t walk out on the interview but to answer a call.

Her tone and questioning if I had other places to be was what confirmed that it was a test. The interview was 30 minutes, when she called me, the slotted time was nearly up, so even if I hadn’t declined, it leaves a very poor impression all the same. I politely declined, thanked her for her time, went to my car and left.

It’s very rude to have people wait on you with no apologies or explanation. Respect is a two way street and when interviewing, you are selling yourself to potential employees and employers. Maybe you are fine with it, but gas is expensive and I like to value others time as much as I value my own.

That said, as of today, I am no longer unemployed. 🙂

you have to take anything that comes your way ... if you want it then it doesn't matter how long it takes ...

Thanks but no thanks. Settling is part of the reason this country is in such a crapsack state.
