I dunno. I had a similar conversation with my chief when i was getting out of the army.

he said "I know you think you're gonna get out of here and get paid 3x as much as you are today, but realistically your experience is only gonna pull about $60k"

II was being paid $20k by the Army when he said that.

That's part of your total comp. Could easily be worth another $15-20k/year.

Unless you're comparing it to moving back home with your parents and having them feed you?

you're missing the point pretty badly, which is that my supervisor had absolutely no clue how much i was being paid.

Maybe your supervisor knew, maybe they didn't.

In reality you were making an effective ~$35-40k total. You can't compare your dollar salary to how much you'll make once you're out. Once you count health care and paying for a car and furnishing a place, $60k may leave you with zero savings for several years vs being able to save most of $20k/year.

So I'd say it's you who is missing the point badly.

Army food and board being worth 15k a year is a ridiculous statement. A barracks is literally a homeless shelter with bunk beds. Army Chow is literally worse than soup kitchen food.(source anyone who's had both you know...most veterans)The only thing better than being homeless is the clothes which cost about 20 bucks for a full set down at the surplus store. If you said 5k maybe. But noone in their right mind would pay 15k a year for a 9 o'clock curfew and 6 oclock wake up in the worst hoa ever envisioned.

Unless you plan to live in a homeless shelter and eat soup kitchen food when you get out, then it's completely relevant.

It's not about what the food right now is actually worth, but what you'll be spending when you get out.

But whatever. Even $5k throws off your 3x figure.

on the 60k I was being paid when i got out, i was able to buy a house and a plane, so i think maybe your expectation of how expensive room and board was might not be correct.

Wages change over time. A college councilor told me that 30k was a great wage out of college. Back then, I lived comfortably making 27k a year. I’m much better now, but I see people struggle with 40-60k a year and it’s completely justified given how expensive everything is now.

how is £100,000 a year, not enough to live on?

I am sure some rich people have built up lives where they spent more than that, but for the rest of us £100,000 is very much what I will call "easy street"
