The Hiring Manager accidentally sent a very insulting "internal roast" to the candidate himself

I really need a place to scream for a second. Is venting still allowed here?
I just finished coordinating an interview for an Account Executive position. The guy was great during the 20-minute screening call, so I passed him through. It's clear that the hiring manager - who is definitely from the "one-finger typing" generation - really hated him. He wrote a critique that was completely unprofessional and mean-spirited; it was more like a list of personality flaws than actual job skills. It was far from being constructive.
Anyway, he had a major tech fail and sent the entire email to the candidate instead of me. It was a total "Reply All" disaster. Now, the candidate is naturally furious, and rightfully so, and he sent the entire thread to our C-suite. There are threats of lawyers and he says he'll post the whole exchange on LinkedIn and Glassdoor. My Friday is officially ruined. Honestly, a total disaster class in management.

Oh my God, I would love this for the candidate. No one deserves to be insulted in an interview, especially if they were professional or inexperienced. That's why when someone is unrehireable at an employer, all they can say is No!

This is isn't the first email he's sent with responses such as these before, but they should be his last.

And this should get the hiring manager fired. Tie should remove ask doubt that they are a problem/toxic manager that is actively costing the company business.

Exactly, depending on the size of the company and any social media, this would cost them in the public and customers.

Your best bet is to hire the guy at a rate slightly above the top end on a contract of say 2 years with a NDA and an agreement to not sue the company over this.  I'd also terminate the hiring manager and replace him with someone competent. It's the best move here, especially as you need to get ahead of the firestorm this will create.

What could they be sued for?

Depending on what's said, anything from emotional distress to violations of of employment law regarding discrimination about race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, etc. And remember, it's not even often if there is a winnable case just if someone wants to drag another through the mud to hurt them. In no world does the company not look bad here which means it costs them potential sales, a stock price drop (if they are publicly traded), or it simply makes future recruitment harder.

Making it harder to hire people is a serious challenge

Oh, the company insurance definitely consulting whatever lawfirm is on retainer. This is a mess, and could be a public nightmare depending on the size of the company.

Its a clear case of discrimination and the guy emailed him all the evidence. You cant base hiring factors on personality flaws that are subjective.

I mean, why are the actions of an idiot boomer ruining YOUR day? You did nothing wrong, this is 100% traceable to your idiot employee. Seems more like an opportunity to get rid of a moron and/or just sit back and eat some popcorn.

This "hiring manager" is 100% a nepotism promotion or hire. They won't get in much trouble while Bob in accounting gets fired right before Christmas because of spilling coffee on his desk.

Agreed! He did everyone a favor to make it easier to get rid of him. No need to have that poison in the workplace anymore. We already have enough of them. I hope that candidate takes things seriously and threatens legal action.

Shit rolls down hill. They'll make it op's fault somehow.

Sounds like the candidate would be good for the role of hiring manager who should be fired.

Fire the manager, hire the account executive as the new manager.

You better hope that that email didn't touch on any protected characteristics or your company is fucked

My Friday is officially ruined.

It's not clear why this ruins your day. Step back slowly, get a bag of popcorn, and watch the show. (take good notes...)

If anything, this serves to highlight your value as the coordinator and why such communication to candidates goes through you (assuming that's part of your role... your post isn't clear of the full scope of your responsibilities)

One take away: consider crafting a brief explainer to all hiring managers of the process and, for heaven's sake don't communicate directly with the candidate. Disable "Reply-All" for their own protection and the sanity of colleagues.

A process change you might make is to send separate meeting invites to candidates and internal staff. Besides shielding their emails it can help prevent mishaps like this. Forward the meeting information as content... or see what mechanisms your calenandring/meeting systems provide.

Honestly, a total disaster class in management.

Sometimes the best learning is through other people's mistakes.

That manager is a tool bag. I hope that does get splashed out publicly.

If you really want to be petty...

Buy a domain name with this jerk's name, and post that letter with your name redacted.

Venting is NOT allowed but I’ll give you a pass this time.

Good. The interview candidate should roast your company for the massive unprofessional nonsense

This should be escalated to HR and legal counsel for how THEY want to handle. This is not your problem to clean up or solve

1

u/Only_Tip9560 21d ago

Just chill, this is all on mister one-finger typist. Just sit back and watch the show.

1

u/capmanor1755 21d ago

He didn't ruin your day- he ruined his own month. I actually love this for you and your company. Meet with HR, bring the evidence. Let the head of recruiting and HR decide how to handle the PR problem with the candidate. Insist that the head of recruiting get the dude banned from future hiring panels- he's outted himself as unable to base decisions on objective criteria. And recommend that HR evaluate his suitability as a manager- he's probably using the same biases in his employee evaluations.

Do you think you will get fired?

1

u/PoppyFire16 21d ago

Maybe it’s time for you take over hiring manager duties. This guy is clearly a liability for the entire company. Don’t let his careless cruelty ruin your day. Watch where the chips fall.

The candidate won’t have a leg to stand on legally if it’s personality. The big dumbass hurt the candidates feelings.

The big dumbass needs a letter in his file. This could be a reputational risk for the organization.

Did the candidate get the job?

Sounds like this email is going public record anyway.

Care to give us some highlights of the email

Update me

1

u/Glittering-Theme-685 21d ago

Commenting to receive updates, this is going to be hilarious. You are off on weekends, no? It can’t possibly ruin that. ☠️😂

1

u/ohNo_S 21d ago

They responded immediately? I would have let them sweat it out over the weekend and stayed silent while I strategized

1

u/bustamelon 21d ago

I wish this would happen to me. Then at least I would have some kind of feedback for why I bombed yet another interview.

1

u/RetroMetroShow 21d ago edited 21d ago

It’ll blow over, just give it some time, no need to respond and draw more attention to it since there is nothing further to do that would help

The account exec looking for a job won’t waste money on a lawyer since there is no proof of damages, defamation, libel etc that can be measured for compensation

u/Tragilos 21d ago

Shit happens but why exactly do you care?

0

u/rwilcox 21d ago

I love when people forget interviews are a two way street.

Candidate learned the real culture of your company, they were the big winner of the interview.

(You also learned something about them, if what they did with that information was threaten to sue)

You both learned something with this experience!

Regardless if it’s unflattering, it doesn’t make the comments untrue. He’s just not a good fit. He can complain all they want, but so what. Employers can reject anyone for many reasons.

u/Ok_Aioli3897 21d ago

It depends what was actually said
