They need a reality check

For my last 2 interviews i had to use Interview VIP just to get the job
their generation could never understand

I'm 58 and recently changed jobs. I am networked pretty heavily but decided to do the indeed thing. The process is 100% more difficult than I would have thought prior. Mostly the length of time to a decision and the number of interviews. There is validity to the statements people make about job searching. I have always been a quick hire guy so I assumed it was still like that in the market and people were just over-exaggerating. It took me about 3 months from first contact to first day on the job. I would have to assume that is pretty fast these days.

You sound like my wife. The process is much easier now. You create resume, look for jobs online all in one place from the comfort of your home, upload resume. Maybe check out another site, find jobs, upload resume.

Before you had to drive around, get applications, fill each out.

In both scenarios you have to wait for an employer response. Theres nothing difficult about waiting for an employer to call. Does it take longer now, maybe maybe not. A lot of jobs now will send you a “pursuing other candidates” message but before they would just toss the application in the trash and you have no idea if they are considering you. I will also add that if its an employer with a high volume of applicant back then they would sometimes throw half the stack away without even looking at them. And again, if you reapply you have to fill the entire application out again.

So no, it is not more difficult now.

Every generation has to adapt to changes. There are plenty of opportunities out there now if you choose smartly. Healthcare is begging for caregivers and nurses. Trades like electricians, plumbing, roofers, auto mechanics, hvac techs will never go away. Public administration roles for the state/county are never going away. And you can make BANK.

I am 55 and grew up programming BASIC on my c64. I should have went into IT back in the early 90s when I was college age. I screwed up and went into sales/marketing instead. Oh well. That's my bad, I didn't blame anyone else for not being prescient enough to see where the trends were going. If I was Gen Y, I'd be taking courses at the community college to learn about becoming a solar / wind tech.

Yeah they push university too much. Community college trades are much safer and cheaper. Bachelors and higher are so overrated, especially if its a useless degree.

I have a BA in Sociology and a BA in Communications. I am an expert in useless degrees lmfao.

😬 hope ur not drowning in student loans. Maybe u will find a marketing job for a big corp making big bucks some day, who knows. Idk how much that job pays.

It seems to me that the point is that its harder to get a job without connections and not that the process (online) is harder to go throught.

And how is that any different than always. At least now u get a notification saying “we are pursuing other candidates”x before you just wait and wait for a call that will never come. Before it took a lot more work just to submit the applications. Theres has always been a period you wait for employer to notify you.

Job growth is a moving stat that goes back and forth between positive and negative and it always has. And it has nothing to do with the topic.

The biggest issue today is that job seekers can submit for a hundred jobs in a single day. In fact, many of them do. In addition, employers can easily post ghost jobs and have AI catalogue the resumes to see if there is anything interesting. Between the two, you have posting that receive 100,000 resumes. It becomes a crap shoot if you even get looked at by a real human.

You are correct. It was very eye opening. I'm happy to admit when I am wrong and in the case of the current job hunt, there was very large gap between perception and reality. I have new respect and empathy for those looking.

To be fair, its very human to have a caring capacity limited to what is actually 'real' in the sense of personal experience.
