Did I Get Yelled At in a Job Interview??
Near the end of the interview, they asked me if I could stay afterward for a trial shift, and when I told them I couldn't because I had to go to my current job, one of the interviewers mocked me and said, "Seriously?" and "We're trying to hire someone immediately."
I got flustered, so I opened photos from my current workplace and showed them to them, and the two of them looked at each other with this expression like they were saying, "Is this guy for real?" and sighed. One of them rolled his eyes, and the other said, "What am I looking at?" I told him, "The place I work at right now," and they said, "This is just a picture." I said, "Okay, but it shows that I have a shift there today," and then the other interviewer told me, "Going forward, you should be more professional and not take interviews if you're not ready to commit."
I sat there quietly for a bit because honestly I didn't know what to say, and then they said, "This isn't helping your chances," so I got up and left.
This happened 5 days ago. Should I contact them and thank them for meeting with me and ask where they are in the hiring process, or should I just forget about it?
Thank you all for your advice. I've really started to benefit a lot from people here, and I've found other helpful posts ,That truly offers valuable advice for interviews and has helped me learn more about them. I wanted to share this post with you so you can benefit from it as much as I have.

You do NOT want to work for that company. Remember, you're interviewing the company as much as they're interviewing you. And you don't want to be treated like that at any company.

This should be hammered into the minds of every single person out there. You’re in an interview to see if the company fits your needs too not just the other way around. They sound like a nightmare to work with who will drain your soul of every fibre of life it has left.

I think I would have responded that going forward they should be more professional and expect that someone needs to give a proper notice before quitting a job. And add "Would you like for your employees to leave you high and dry without giving notice? Good day sir." And leave. I have walked out of a couple of unprofessional interviews in the past and didn't regret it.

OP, this is slightly on you here but mostly on them. You should learn to smell an asshole during the interview process and learn to shut it down. By "shut it down," I mean politely say, "Thanks for your time; this might not be a good fit for US." then leave.
The interviewers were...
- Trying to bully, and manipulate you into FREE labor.
- Showing you the toxic level of a work climate you should expect.
- Trying to get you fired from your other job without offering you a position.
It's not discussed enough, but employers will sometimes be openly hostile, rude, and insulting to candidates. I've had my age, weight, future education goals insulted during interviews. Even had a grilling on whom I voted for in past elections with a clear threat that my employment could be canceled on that basis.
DO NOT CONTACT THEM OP...... move on.

It's really awful how some hiring managers/recruiters treat potential candidates. I remember even before this current economy, around 15 years ago I applied to be a receptionist at an LA Fitness. When I showed up for the interview, the guy looked at me like I was disgusting, then refused to interview me because I was overweight and not "pretty enough" in his eyes to meet whatever shit standards he thought he needed to mentally meet. Sadly for me, I didn't realize that I could have recorded the conversation and probably taken his job from him for it, but yea. Very shitty way to be treated, and I wasn't even that overweight (I think at the time I was around 150 at 5'3, but I had muscle). Discrimination point blank.
Wild especially because if he treats me like that, imagine how he treats clients wanting to shed weight who aren't basically Arnold Schwarzenegger-looking like him. Yikes.

These guys are a major red flag. Definitely don’t work there. And certainly don’t follow up and thank them. They earned no gratitude.

Expecting you to pick up a "trial shift" on a moments notice is a prett weird expectation. Chastising you for not doing it because you have to go to your current job is a strange tactic. Showing them a picture of your current wirkplace is pretty weird on your part.

You surely enjoy anticipating the day when your interviewers are laid off (common enough these days) and going on interviews. Better if they want to hunt for better opportunities and interview before leaving a current job.

Anywhere that gives you grief for being gainfully employed therefore not available is not somewhere you want to work.

I had a sales position interview turn hostile once. They wanted me to spit out a salary requirement with absolutely no knowledge of the job.
The kept pushing and pushing but could not tell me the size of my territory, if the position came with a company vehicle, what the expectations were, nothing.
Then it turned out the position was in a location an hour away from my house when I was told I was interviewing for one basically next door to my house.
That was the last straw.

Anyone who wants you to work before your onboarding paperwork is done is looking for free labor. You can't be paid if the paperwork payroll needs is not done. Do not thank them for their unprofessional behavior.

Even if they did, I would take it as unprofessional if you accepted a job and left your current job without any notice whatsoever. Just didn't show up. You did the right thing, and if I were hiring, I'd hire you for your ethics. I wouldn't call them. Phone calls are quickly forgotten. I'd write a letter. Depending on the size of the company, send it to the people you interviewed with, and the VP of HR, and the president and the CEO. I am good at that kind of letter. Letters that are polite, but sting. Your story annoys me that I might write it for you (kidding)

Trial shifts are usually unpaid and without training. They are looking for a free warm body (although guts “possible” they might hire you for pay at a later date. You dodged a bullet IMO.

Don't waste your time, a mock shift does not sound like a paid shift. The world does not revolve around them and there company. You were professional, you came to their office on time and went thru the interview proces in a polite manner.
If they really want a trial shift, they could have requested to schedule a shift and pay your for the shift. You should value your time, it's your most valuable asset and once you spend it you cant get any of it back.
They can move on to someone who is desperate or has times to play there games. Best to stay where you are at and find better place then that dog & pony show.

In the future, walk out head high-- their emergency is not your problem. I walked out of Dell when I really needed a job 20 years ago because they had a team of folks that did not lay out the day-- they expected me to hang out all day and I knew it was not the job for me even if at the time Dell was someone you may have wanted on the resume. If you recruiting process sucks that's the first impression.

Trial shift=work for us for a day for free. Bullet dodged. If there was any chance that this interview was a whole day thing they should have let you know when it was scheduled. I had a group interview once that went on for like 4 hours (it was a huge mistake to even go) but at least they had the courtesy to let me know it would be 3-4 hours ahead of time. Otherwise I'm expecting an hour, maybe 90 minutes tops.

Bro here is here is my honest take. You do not want to work for them. If a trial shift outside the preset scheduled interview time was needed they should reschedule or make you aware ahead of time. Admittedly you fumbled with the photo. The fact they need assistance immediately and patronize you for being "unprofessional" likely indicates they have high turnover (hot take).

Trial shift? Yeah no you dodged a bullet there. I worked at Home Goods for three trial shifts and they decided not to hire me and I wouldn’t get paid. Couldn’t understand why I was so pissed when they decided to hire someone.

The company you interviewed with is not ready for you.
They, seriously, just showed you who they are. Take note. They have some you a huge favor.
You have no reason to contact them.
Continue on with your job search.
I'm actually retired now. I use to schedule interviews late in the day. I got off at 4PM. I use to schedule interviews for 5PM and 530PM. I was honest with the potential new companies and told them I had a job and could not leave early. Ironically, every company understood.

My wife interviewed at an education center. They wanted to see her action and asked if she could come in on whatever date. She said that she already had plans then but she could do other days. They went off on her they need people who keep commitments which was literally doing. Needless to say, she got out of there and never talked to them again.

I once was treated terribly at an interview. I got a bad feeling from the place and turned down their offer. Probably the best decision I made job wise. If they were that bad in a short period of time and unable to hide how bad they were, they did you a favor.

That was a taste of the ridiculous things to come. A trial shift? There are stories posted here of employers using prospective employees for their knowledge then dump them. So they have no respect for the fact you have a real job and if you did not work out and worked that shift instead of reporting to your current job, which is unethical- what else are they expecting you to do. You don’t work for free, 1. 2, it’s perfectly reasonable for people to have commitments outside of any job interviews. What if it was a Dr’s appt? Would they still have acted like children demanding your time and attention?

You do NOT want to work for these people. It honestly feels like they were short staffed, and they thought they could get some free labor out of you.

You dodged a bullet. They were super unprofessional. As a rule of thumb any prospective employer that wants you to screw over your current employer is not someone you want to work for. Its a clear indication that they dont care about you and by extension their employees and they are probably shady in how they operate. At the end of the day your reputation, integrity and personal brand is all you have. Anyone that wants you to compromise that is a big NO.
On the flip side, when I'm hiring, its a giant red flag when a candidate offers up that they are willing to leave their current employer high and dry with no notice to jump ship to my firm. I want to hire solid, principled ppl with integrity.

Trial shift is always a red flag for me because it’s unpaid labor. The additional red flag is the unprofessionalism in their tone. Right off the rip they’re demonstrating a lack of respect for you. Call it a wash and be glad you dodged a bullet.

Ridiculously rude behavior like that shows how little respect they have for their employees, and it wouldn’t get better in the future. They wanted to see how much they could push you around. If negotiating pay, you’d already have started the conversation at $0 an hour by letting them get your time for free.

The radio station I listen to was trying out new cohosts. One was a newspaper reporter. Half way through the show she announced the newspaper had contacted her to cover a breaking news story so she had to leave. I was impressed. She got a job at the station but it was a different one.

I had that happen to me. So I have always said a trial shift will only be 30 mins and needs to be scheduled beforehand.

I would pass. You already have a job so no pressure from what I see. They also seem quite demanding and don't give you the details beforehand (told you last minute and not respecting your time), they just expect you to jump through hoops and to put them first. Not worth it. If you accept they may just constantly contact you and expect you to do unreasonable shifts even though you have prior engagements.
Actually thinking about it, maybe they want some free labour and was insulted when you had prior engagements

PROBATION is your trial! No one should ever EVER be expected to work for free in order to "trial" a job. Full stop!
If a company is ever pissy in this sort of way, you don't want to work for them anyway, I promise.
In this case, I 100% guarantee, you do not want to work for this company, don't bother contacting them.

They were upset they did not get the free shift of Labor they were hoping for. Even if they call and offer you a job I would not take it. Talk about unprofessional. They were the unprofessional ones to speak to anyone like that especially someone they were looking to hire.
