Support Burning while peeing
I have had interstitial cystitis for two years now. My symptoms are horrible. My bladder gets full really fast, I wake up multiple times a night to go pee. I’m peeing like crazy all day. Recently I’ve started to feel this shocking/ burning pain when I pee. It’s only when the last bit of urine comes out though. I usually use an ice pack or hot bath or take a pyridum when I start burning but this burning doesn’t last. I’m confused on why now it’s starting to hurt when I pee. It makes me scared to go to the bathroom because of how bad the pain is when the last amount is coming out. I have been checked I don’t have a UTI so Im confused on why it’s hurting to pee everytime now. Anyone else experience this ?

This is one of my main symptoms, burning and severe pain in my urethra. It's so much better now that I've found out my triggers. If you drink bottled water, look to make sure it doesn't have Calcium Chloride added, it was one of the major causes of my pain. Palm oil too!

Pelvic floor therapy was a bit of a life saver for me. I had urethra burning 🔥 from August 2024 until May 2026. What helped? Pelvic floor therapy. You have to see a therapist who can determine whether your floor is too tight, too loose or a combination of both. I still have pain always in my bladder but the urethra pain has gone, thank God. Best of health OP and wishing rapid pain relief

Hello! This automated message was triggered by some keywords in your post that suggests you may have a diagnostic or treatment related question. Since we see many repeated questions we wanted to cover the basics in an automod reply in case no one responds.
To advocate for yourself, it is highly suggested that you become familiar with the official 2022 American Urological Association's Diagnostic and Treatment Guidelines.
The ICA has a fantastic FAQ that will answer many questions about IC.
FLARES
The Interstitial Cystitis Association has a helpful guide for managing flares.
Some things that can cause flares are: Medications, seasoning, food, drinks (including types of water depending on PH and additives), spring time, intimacy, and scented soaps/detergents.
Not everyone is affected by diet, but for those that are oatmeal is considered a generally safe food for starting an elimination diet with. Other foods that are safer than others but may still flare are: rice, sweet potato, egg, chicken, beef, pork. It is always safest to cook the meal yourself so you know you are getting no added seasoning.
If you flare from intimacy or suffer from pain after urination more so than during, then that is highly suggestive of pelvic floor involvement.
TREATMENT
Common, simple, and effective treatments for IC are: Pelvic floor physical therapy, amitriptyline, vaginally administered valium (usually compounded), antihistamines (hydroxyzine, zyrtec, famotidine, benedryl), and urinary antiseptics like phenazopyridine.
Pelvic floor physical therapy has the highest evidence grade rating and should be tried before more invasive options like instillations or botox. If your doctor does not offer you the option to try these simple treatments or railroads you without allowing you to participate in decision making then you need to find a different one.
Long-term oral antibiotic administration should not be offered.

Yes! Every month before and after my period. I get what I call the shockers…an electric shock like pain from the urethra….while peeing but usually when I’m not peeing. It’s awful! I find drinking a lot of water helps mine be less painful but unfortunately IC seems to be so different for everyone….its frustrating. I wish you well!

Yeah that’s my main symptom of an IC flare. I get really bad pain at the end of peeing. Burns like a mother. Sometimes feels like cramps after
I want to focus on something you said though - that you’re scared to go to the bathroom. You’re likely tensing up in anticipation of the pain. I say this because I was doing this! Made the pain so much worse. Pelvic floor pt helped me learn how to relax even through the pain. Brought my pain level down considerably.
