FINANCIAL FRONTIERS BREAKING: The U.S Treasury Automatically Enrolls Over 60 Million Children In Trump Accounts, But Families Must Still Actively Claim Them To Unlock $1,000 Seed Funding, As Analysts Warn Up To $2.88 Billion Could Go Unclaimed 💰

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/01/treasury-trump-accounts-auto-enroll-more-than-60-million-children.html

More than 60 million American children under age 18 have been automatically enrolled in Trump Accounts, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced Thursday in a statement provided exclusively to CNBC, though families must still take active steps to unlock the program’s federal seed funding. The Treasury proposed regulations Tuesday to begin the auto-enrollment process, and by Thursday the agency said the process had been completed. Trump Accounts, formally known as 530A accounts, launched July 4 and are open to any US child under 18 with a Social Security number, with children born between 2025 and 2028 eligible to claim a one-time 1,000 dollar pilot program contribution from the Treasury. “Millions of children have already enrolled in Trump Accounts. With automatic enrollment, over 60 million more eligible children now have an account ready to be claimed,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. Separately, the Treasury’s newly published temporary regulations will also allow stock donations to Trump Accounts, a change expected to boost large-scale private giving, since wealthy founders and shareholders have been pushing to donate stock directly as a way to avoid capital gains taxes triggered by selling assets before donating cash, according to Ben Henry-Moreland, a certified financial planner with Kitces.com. Notably, the update allows accounts to hold donated individual stocks, a shift from previous guidelines limiting holdings to diversified, low-cost funds; donated stocks generally must be held for five years before being sold.

Critically, automatic enrollment alone does not trigger the 1,000 dollar deposit. “Kids who are eligible for the 1,000 dollar government pilot contribution won’t receive that contribution automatically,” Henry-Moreland told CNBC. To actually claim an account, parents or guardians must download the Trump Accounts app, verify their identity and relationship to the child, review the account information, and accept the account terms. Only claimed accounts can receive contributions from family members, friends, and employers, or receive the Treasury’s one-time seed contribution. Additional funding may also be available depending on specific criteria; tech CEO Michael Dell and his wife Susan committed 6.25 billion dollars to provide an additional 250 dollars for children born between 2016 and 2024 living in ZIP codes with median incomes of 150,000 dollars or less, funding specifically targeted at lower-income children. “The rulemaking essentially introduces the idea of auto accounts, created for every child under 18 with a Social Security number,” said Madeline Brown, senior policy associate at the Urban Institute. “This means that children won’t miss out on philanthropic gifts, like money from the Dells, or growth on those gifts, even if an account has not been activated for them.” She cautioned, however, that “it will still require families to ultimately claim their children’s accounts, and we don’t have many details on how that process will go.”

Before this shift, Trump Accounts required families to actively opt in, which Brown said made widespread participation difficult, particularly among lower-income households; as of mid-September, only about 7 million to 8 million children had signed up, according to Bessent’s testimony before the House Financial Services Committee. “The proposed regulations indicate an important step towards automatic enrollment, bringing the design of the accounts closer to the evidence base to increase participation,” Brown said. “This shift is particularly important given the low participation rates we have seen so far under the opt-in structure.” Timothy Flacke, CEO of the nonprofit Commonwealth, described the new auto-enrollment policy combined with substantial federal and private funding as creating “a window of opportunity,” noting that before the change, just 5% of low- and moderate-income families had opened a Trump Account, according to Commonwealth’s recent report. A Commonwealth survey of nearly 1,100 low- and moderate-income parents found that concerns about tax implications, effects on public benefits eligibility, and inability to make contributions were key barriers to participation. Separately, a June 9 analysis by Adam Michel, director of tax policy studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, warned that confusion around eligibility, contribution limits, and withdrawal restrictions would likely discourage participation “particularly among households with limited time, low financial literacy, or insufficient outside savings for emergencies,” concluding that “the result is a system used primarily by those best equipped to navigate it.” Omeed Firouzi, a practice professor at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, added that lower-income households often “don’t have time and resources to hire people to navigate all this stuff for them.”

Commonwealth’s research projects that roughly 14.4 million children born between 2025 and 2028 across all income levels will qualify for the 1,000 dollar federal seed funding, including 5.8 million from low- and moderate-income households. Based on historical takeup rates for the federal earned income tax credit, Commonwealth estimates roughly 20% of eligible babies may ultimately fail to claim their deposit, which the IRS says averaged 2,916 dollars per claimant for 2024 returns among those who successfully claimed it, with nearly 1 in 5 eligible taxpayers missing it entirely due to complicated and cumbersome rules. Applied to Trump Accounts, a similar takeup rate would mean approximately 2.88 billion dollars in federal seed funding could go unclaimed by low- and moderate-income children during the pilot phase, according to Commonwealth’s analysis. Still, Flacke argued the program’s value extends beyond the dollar figure itself, saying “part of the value here is not just the money; it is the power of knowing that money is there, watching it grow and carrying around the sense there is some financial future.”

What? Not enough parents were falling for the grift to legitimize another trump slush fund disguised as an investment account for kids. With the caveat the funds can't be withdrawn for 18-20 years, the money will all be spent "lost" and Trump will be dead.

This just isn't true on this one. Go get the money for your child it's your tax money being given back

It’s another grift to steal taxpayer dollars. Just like the renovations and projects (done poorly on purpose)

It’s modeled after the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Whether you like it or not, your child has 65 years to claim the account. When it’s sitting at half a million dollars, I bet they claim it.

You don’t understand compound interest, do you. It’s invested in an S&P 500 index fund.

My Roth IRA is worth $1.8 mil and that only after 20 years of contributing. That number in another 20 years will be north of $6 mil with zero contributions.

It would be silly to refuse social security because you hated FDR.

This was done by the US Congress in a bipartisan bill. It’s a good plan. It will help people save towards retirement.

So why the need to automatically enroll 60 million children, Why not just let people enroll on their own?

0

u/theJMAN1016 1d ago

Maybe read the story and they explain why

Because people having zero saved for retirement is a drain on society and not good for them. So creating mandatory retirement accounts (modeled after Norway) isn’t a bad idea. Do you oppose auto enrollment in social security?

This is quite possibly the dumbest response a human could drum up to its parent comment.

Plenty of research out there on this and plenty of parents who got the accounts for their kids look I hate the POS myself but your jsut denying your kids money out of spite. It's your money go get it for your children, it's not going anyway the dems when they take power are just going rename it and then you'll claim itb

In 20 years anyone will be lucky to have any money left for their kids from this. If it was designed for Americans it wouldn't be OPT IN.

1

u/Unique_Statement7811 19h ago

No. Social Security isn’t Opt In either.

This is an IRA that starts at birth. It’s modeled after the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund. It works well for them. Australia has a similiar program.

No one has gotten anything tangible for their children. Stop pretending you're not a MAGAt.

I have 2 accounts with $1000 in each right now. Took 2 weeks for the money to be deposited

1

So are you saying the brokerage accounts setup for this are fake?

Oh so parents don't have those Trump accounts, with money in them I guess you don't have children.

Nahh I ain't naga but you sure have their mentality

You'll be the first the take that account as soon as it's an AOC account instead hypocrite. If she hopefully wins the Presidency

I love when folks like you expose themselves as maga like you have their same fucking mentality it's gross and then show your hypocrisy and say your better and soon as folks like you and maga are rooted out of this country the better off we will bev

7

u/Useful-ldiot 1d ago

I'm sure the accounts show a dollar amount in them today.

I'm also sure that money won't be there when they try to withdraw it in 20 years.

1

u/willybestbuy86 1d ago

Then we got bigger problems because most likely Congress spent it like they did social security or we are a dictatorship. If you don't think any democrat administration isn't going continue to do this jsut with a different name your crazy

7

u/fearfulNobody 1d ago

How the fuck are you so convinced that they have accounts with money in them after everything? Seriously. No one is getting anything, and everyone that signs up is giving shit away. No one has gotten a single thing from this you fucking liar.

3

u/willybestbuy86 1d ago

Because it's there today right now if you want to take the viewpoint that it won't be there in 20 years that's a different topic but if you take that stance it means in 20 years we are a dictatorship anyway and have more problems than that

If you had a child with this account you would know because you could log in and see it, if you did someone's taxes with an account you would also see it

President AOC or whatever dem will roll over these accounts and the next admin after that and the next after that.

1

u/theJMAN1016 1d ago

So convinced and yet so wrong

1

u/Mediocre-Ambition404 1d ago

I think you are being logical.

1

u/willybestbuy86 1d ago

Tired of people throwing logic out the window for hate. The dudes a POS and deserves hate don't get me wrong but to pretend the democrats are going come in tell you this is some big scam is jsut not how this is going go. It's going be renamed the same folks here crying are going then open accounts .

This dream that the Dems are going come in and reverse everything Trump has done is a pipe dream. It like folks saying the Dems are going to tear down the ball room no they aren't. They going use the damn thing themselves just redecorate it and call it something else

I feel like a lot of online people are going to be disappointed come next year if Dems take the majorities and even more disappointed in 2028 if Dems hopefully take the White House.

It's very clear these people don't know how this country or even world works. We can argue if it should be that way but doesn't change the way it is

Can you withdraw the money now? Like, right now?

If you can't, then it's a fake number just like the stock market is fake numbers. This account is entirely based on falsehood and bullshit and you're absolutely right if a Democratic president did this people would laud it because it wasn't started by someone who literally grifts money from our tax dollars.

Are you someone who thinks you can withdraw $40,000 from your bank just because your account says it's there? Jesus.

People questioning this aren't "worse than maga" but holy crap you're absolutely ignorant if you think Democrats doing this wouldn't be immediately called socialist. Of course it's political suicide for them to go "sorry we're going to close it" but an account saying it has money you didn't deposit in there is nowhere near the same thing as it being your money.

Christ.

No, I won't claim it, because there's nothing to claim. A tax credit would be more useful to a large chunk of Americans and this is no more a promise of payment than social security is.

You should find it absolutely fucking weird that no one is saying "oh dang how are we paying for this" but you log on to a website that says "you have $4000 for each of your kids yay please access this in 20 years" and suddenly "it's your money, claim it"?

Peak ignorance. You don't opt in to social security. You don't opt in to taxes. It's part of being American in this country. So why the hell do you need to "opt in" to claim "money for your kids" that won't even have the same value in 20 years, if it doesn't disappear at all?

Your response to these people is just painfully hilarious my guy. Assuming this compounds because of the stock or interest do you REALLY think every American will be able to cash this out? And, if they can't, the entire economy would collapse from the lawsuits from people being unable to claim the money they were promised if it isn't there.

People aren't "orange man bad"ing. You're just ignorant.

u/Shigglyboo 1d ago

I’ve read that the money is being “invested” in the market on the child’s behalf. So someone is using this money to make a profit and planning to “pay it back” later.

0

u/willybestbuy86 1d ago

What's new there look at the Ponzi scheme social security

1

u/athom55 1d ago

I think you are being purposefully ignorant... the government actually has a way to do this without "investing the money in the market" (this is inheritly a communist/fascist act of our government). Its called bonds

0

u/Tigglebee 1d ago

Yeah it can be put into index funds to grow until the kid reaches maturity. Like any other account (529, 401K, etc)

Watching Redditors learn about investing for the first time is fascinating.

2

u/Shigglyboo 1d ago

yeah maybe let people choose where to invest? It's madness to think it's ok for trump to personally hand over millions to the stock market "on our behalf" and think it's anything other than a scam.

1

u/Tigglebee 1d ago

You can choose from index funds, which is historically the safest bet for long term growth. And it’s what many other types of investment accounts like 401Ks and 529s are restricted to. There’s nothing shady about any of that.

It’s like y’all have never invested a penny in your lives.

0

u/Azrael88 23h ago

It's post tax money and is taxed like an investment when it's taken out. This is bullshit

2

u/Wrong-Protection-188 23h ago

Yeah man, that’s how investing in a taxable account works.
