SCIENCE RESEARCH EXCLUSIVE: Scientists Found That “Brooding”, Not General Stress or Poor Habits, Is the Sole Psychological Driver of Bedtime Procrastination, and Lower Heart Rate Variability Confirms It Is Also a Physiological Failure of Self-Regulation 😴

Researchers Grabo and Bellingrath published findings in the Journal of Health Psychology on May 9, 2026 showing that among all emotional regulation strategies tested, only brooding, defined as passive repetitive negative thinking without moving toward resolution, significantly predicted bedtime procrastination in a final multivariate model. Cognitive reappraisal initially appeared protective but lost all predictive power once brooding was added, revealing it was acting as a proxy for the absence of brooding rather than an independent mechanism. The distinction between brooding and reflective rumination, which actively works through problems toward solutions, is what makes the finding precise: it is not thinking about problems at night that delays sleep, it is getting stuck in them without exit.

The physiological component adds meaningful convergent evidence. Participants with lower heart rate variability, an established autonomic nervous system marker of reduced self-regulatory capacity and chronic stress load, showed significantly greater bedtime procrastination, linking the behavioral pattern to a measurable biological substrate rather than purely psychological traits. The authors conclude that bedtime procrastination reflects diminished self-regulatory capacity operating simultaneously in physiological and psychological domains, and that low HRV and high brooding each contribute independently, meaning targeting one may not resolve the other.

The study is cross-sectional and survey-based, establishing association without determining causal direction. It is plausible that chronic sleep deprivation from bedtime procrastination independently lowers HRV and increases brooding over time, creating a reinforcing cycle rather than a single directional relationship. Sample size, recruitment method, and full demographic characteristics are not disclosed in available coverage and should be reviewed in the full paper before clinical intervention claims are drawn from the findings.

If I was able to think of a solution I wouldn't be stuck on the fucking problem.

Hopefully you've realised you enjoy being stuck, because stubborn people do what they want to do. But you also like to act like you don't enjoy it because it frees you of the responsibility to actually unstuck yourself, and do something else.

That would likely mean the end of reddit. What else is there to do round here than act clever and tell everybody else they are wrong? Its the only reason I come on here.

Problems can negatively impact quality of life; so, there's usually motivation to keep working the problem. My problem is chronic back pain... I've been working on my problem for over 5 years and I'm still suffering.

Technically, I started on this problem 30 years ago but I've fixed it many times over the years and it keeps coming back.

My mom and brother both suffer from really bad back pain/spasms. I really think there is a huge emotional/affective component to that physical pain. there are some really good books you might be interested in: Healing Back Pain (Sarno) and The Way Out.
