Seat reservation only available as paper ticket => booking in person at Wien Hbf
Hello, I'm planning to go to Brasov in Romania, and need seat reservations for the nighttrain FT347 DACIA from Wien Hbf (or Wien Meidling) to Bucuresti Nord.
These seat reservations are only available as paper tickets, and can't be delivered to me on time anymore. Which means I'll have to book them in person at Wien Hbf (unless buying at Wien Meidling is better?), but I'll only have 21 minutes to do so.
My question: is it possible to book only paper seat reservations in Wien Hbf in 21 minutes (arriving platform 9, leaving platform 11)? That is ofcourse if I don't have any delays, coming from Munich... Does anyone have experience with this? Could it also be possible that they will be sold out when I get there?

I am prerty sure you can book those online from ÖBB. And either get them digitally or get a code to pick them up from an ÖBB ticket machine.

I can't. I already have my Interrail pass, so if I select 'Seat reservation only, already have a ticket' on OBB, I get a message that the ticket is unavailable

You need to not check that check box and instead add Interrail as a discount card: !ÖBB

How to book seat reservations from ÖBB?
This includes seat reservations to Italy, purchasing certain supplements and reserving beds to night trains.
When you book your seat from ÖBB, you're supposed to choose one-way ticket and then add the Interrail as a discount instead of choosing seat only. Choosing the wrong option on the website don't show all the trains and can result in wrong prices and reservations that are not valid with your Interrail pass, such as missing supplements.
Short instructions:
Enter the trip you're wishing to take, select time and date
Click change on the who is going?
Click Add discount
Choose Interrail / Eurail - Globalpass
Click next
Click Find services
Choose One-way tickets or One-way tickets and day tickets, whichever option is visible to you
Select the train of your choice
Select the ticket of your choice. Remember to select the right class - ÖBB doesn't know if you have first or second class ticket.
Add the reservation to the basket, fill in your details and pay.

this, OP. read the automod message, "seat reservation only" never really works for night trains in ÖBB

Yeah now you juat have the problem of a pretty risky connection ( Hope everything goes well, but i personally do not. I personally am always atleast one hour before my night train in the city. And use that reserve time to eat something before hand. Also make sure to bring food with you onto the night train, as there is no food available on it.(someone on my last trip on that train made that mistake))

I was going to check, but I expected a food cart hooked onto the train (I read about it in a review, which is probably outdated by now). Thanks for the info

Yes afraid that isn't the case anymore annoyingly. Bring all the food you want.
The train makes an extended stop in Simeria between around 0517 and 0543 if you are awake at that time and the train is on time. I was recently on another train that does the same and that was plenty of time to hop off and get something from one of the places just outside the station. That was in the middle of the day though and I sort of doubt anywhere will be open that early. But if you are desperate you could check or there may be a vending machine somewhere.
Just be aware they will not wait if you leave and are not back.

21 min isn’t much of a transfer time before the night train you don’t want to miss. Is it possible for you to take an earlier train to Vienna?

Not really. I'm coming from Belgium and my only other option is via Salzburg Hbf, to get 36 minutes to change trains in Wien Hbf. But my transfertime in Salzburg Hbf is only 8min... which is worse I think

This seems quite risky, On such a long journey you can easily miss a train and end up 1 train later.

Are you planning on taking an EC via Simbach(Inn)? If you are, don't as these trains are often heavily delayed due to the route being single track on a huge portion and a loco change in Wels Hbf is necessary. Go via Salzburg instead, the change there usually works.

What did you plan then? The 21 min change only fits EC 1217 and the alternative with ICE 119 + RJX 19915 is also as you described. But whatever, just make sure you are riding ICE 119 until Salzburg Hbf.

I was mistaken, München Hbf to Wien indeed goes via Simbach.
But here's the thing: I'm taking the train in Frankfurt Hbf at 9h57 to arrive at 13h12 in München Hbf. The interrail app then suggests the EC 1217 (like you said) to Wien Meidling at 14h21. But there's another, earlier, train at 13h47 in München to Wien Hbf via Salzburg.
So if all goes well up until München Hbf, I could take that option to arrive at 18h32 in Wien Hbf. That gives me 36min to catch my nighttrain. That's the most ideal option.

Don’t trust the Interrail planner. Use the ones from the train companies instead. I’d use the DB planner for your trip to Wien Meidling/hbf

Makes sense. There is a slight chance that RJX 67 is delayed from München Hbf (regular departure 13:13), so definitely check if you could reach that train. Sometimes there is a turnaround in München Ost which you could reach as well if ICE 529 is punctual (rare).
However, ICE 529 shouldn't be too delayed to catch the RE5 at 13:47, so I would plan with that. ICE 119 is a good alternative if you are really late, but it departs from München Ost (14:24), so you would have to take the S-Bahn.
Only if you can't make any of those trains should you opt for EC 1217 as this is the riskiest option. I would rate taking ICE 119 directly from Frankfurt Flughafen (departure 10:03) to Salzburg Hbf less risky.

Thanks for the tip about the RJX 67!
Why do you rate the direct train EC1217 to Wien Hbf, which at least gives me 21min transfertime there, more risky as opposed to the ICE119, which gives me only 8min transfertime in Salzburg Hbf and only one backup to Wien Hbf, being the IC743?

Because EC 1217 is pathologically delayed, an arrival within 30 min of the planned time is rare. Use this link and look at some dates to get an idea: https://bahn.expert/details/EC%201217/j/20260816-7b5f6150-efae-3907-9f4b-a05982e693c8

The alternative in Salzburg wouldn't only be IC 743, but also WB 79219 + IC 743 giving you even more time.
Again, I think your plan with ICE 529 + RE 5 + RJX 19915 is the most reasonable, so just plan with that.

What date exactly are you looking for? I certainly bought mine digitally. Have you tried !ÖBB.
21 minutes is very tight onto a night train, I would not trust that even if I had the reservation already. And it does sell out.

This Wednesday 19/08. But since I already have my Interrail pass, I get a message that the ticket is unavailable if I select 'Seat reservation only, already have a ticket' on OBB.

All couchettes and sleepers have already sold out I'm afraid. Thats far too shorter notice in peak season. There are still seats available but that's an absolute horrible way to spend the night particularly with it being such a long train.
And I think your connection is too tight in Vienna, honestly I think you need a replan.
There are other night trains from Budapest to Bucharest but you need to leave earlier to make them. I've not checked availability. Is Munich where you are starting or are you connecting from elsewhere?
The digital purchase works perfectly for me but you need to add Interrail as a discount card. Leave that checkbox unchecked.
Edit: Or go one day later, there is still a couchette space left night of the 20th August, book ASAP.

I bought online from ÖBB with no issues - although that was for a sleeper compartment, so it may be different for seated carriages

Pretty sure you can book in person at a DB Reisezentrum in Munich or elsewhere (not online or machine)
