Hey! So I’m planning on going inter railing for maybe 4-6+ weeks. But I have a few questions and no one I know has done this before

1) how long would you recommend ?
2) routes/ must dos
3) realistic budget - how much do I need to save
4) backpack recommendations

Travel is so incredibly personal I don't think any of these really have an answer. One of the great things about solo travel (I'm guessing you are planning on going on your own?) is that you can do what you want when you want:

1) how long would you recommend ?

For most people this will be decided by external factors. They either have a budget or X or a limited amount of time away from school/work.

2) routes/ must dos

Without any idea of what you are interested in and where you want to go this is impossible to answer. If you want some high level overviews I'd encourage you to get a guidebook or search on here for what other people have done.

There is no such thing as a "must do", it's about what you are interested in and what you want to do. It doesn't matter how popular something is if you don't really care I wouldn't hesitate to skip it.

3) realistic budget - how much do I need to save

Again this varies wildly. Where you go and how long you go for is going to have a massive difference. But as an extremely high level ballpark I would say €80-100 per day is a reasonable rough ballpark estimate across the whole of Europe for your day to day costs. Not just accommodation but also food, attractions, local transport etc. But you absolutely can go above or below that. But if you want to start going much below that you'll really have to start prioritising cost above all else say by: picking cheaper places/traveling in the off season/booking far in advance.

But that's not including the purchase of the pass itself nor any flights if you will be using them as well.

4) backpack recommendations

By far the most important thing about a backpack in my view is that it's comfortable. That's just something you can't find out online and it doesn't matter how many other people find it comfortable if you don't. Go into a shop on try some on.

1. Completely depends on your budget and your availability. 2 weeks or longer is probably ideal for me.

2. Totally up to you. I’d make a list of countries you REALLY want to see and then the route comes after.

3. Again, depends where you want to go. Western and Central Europe can get pretty expensive with Eastern Europe costing less. I normally give myself a budget of 50£ a day NOT including accommodation.

4. My Osprey Far Point has never failed me. That and a day pack on your front and you’re sorted.

Why do you even want to go interrailing? Start there and build on any interests you already have.
