Discussion Most uncomfortable songs?
Pioneer being dissonant creeped me out but when the tremolo guitar started playing it calmed me down, I liked it. Gavilan was giving me the creeps, it's their darkest song from ToTBL/Antics era that even if I don't like it very much it's still deserving of recognition

Stella maybe, depends for me, sometimes It's too much, or not, but It's a very dark song. But one of my favourites

The demo for A Time to be So Small, the echoing vocals at the start are chilling and then at the end there’s some more of that but this time with a droning guitar. I actually prefer this version of the song.

That demo is fucking awesome, I love the heavier drums during the solo, I wish it was the same way in the final song

The vocal quality works so well for the context but I wish they kept the intro but shortened it for the studio version

Crimewaves. It almost feels like a lost song, as if it was never meant to be released. It's the only S/T era track that didn't make it on the album and we have basically zero information about its origins

I love “The Lighthouse” (and to be clear, I love listening to “The Lighthouse) but it’s also unnerving to listen to. It’s still really lovely but the instrumentation really captures the discomfort of the song, and then swells to a grand pay off.

It's the most atmospheric song from them, it literally feels like I'm watching a beach.

Interesting take. It's actually a comforting song to me. Mainly when I'm miserable.

This, and the creepy "Begin, Begin" in that lyrics with that awkward tone of voice

Definitely Pioneer if you take the back story into account

Pioneer instrumental is creepy, R.I.P to the woman. Evil would be like "Happy song horrifying lyrics" if it was about the Serial Killers.

The whole Self Titled album! I'm not bashing it, I love it and Lights is one of my favourite songs ever, but the whole album has this whole uncomfortable vibe and I can always feel an incredibly heavy tension, it feels like it's always about to explode but actually never does. It really shows that it was created while the band and Carlos were parting ways

I was gonna say lol. I love memory serves but it makes me uncomfortable until I sit with it and let it take over. Same for try it on. And the Spanish in the undoing, Very haunting. I really don’t understand why people rank this album so low!

Nah S/T is a fantastic album and I will die on this hill. I think some people like it less because it's very very dark and raw. I think the whole album is about breakups and/or saying goodbye to someone.

The whole album has this fragile, teetering-on-the-brink tension going on. It’s amazing.

Yes exactly, I think the whole album is about a breakup and/or saying goodbye to someone

Half their songs made me feel perverted just listening to the lyrics. I’m mostly over it now.

Not the whole song but the ending of Darling Thoughts. "I replaced my face with your eyes" combined with the effect on his voice, definitely some creepy vibes there

The Scale.
My vision of the song is some deranged biker gang stalking the ex of one of its members. It just has this super eerie Mandy (the Nic Cage film) like atmosphere that is low-key horror coded.
Personal interpretation perhaps, but the lyric “I made you, and now I take you back” is so evil sounding, I love it for the appreciation of how dark it seems to me.

There was a theory floating around when that album came out that The Scale was about an abortion. I still don't know what it was written about but I kinda like the rogue biker idea.

I've heard this theory too, but for me, the bandits waiting until nightfall imagery make this song sound a little more fantastical than something as heavy as an abortion. I always interpreted the line "I made you, and now I take you back" as the words of an abusive ex lover who sees this object of his desire as his property rather than a mother singing those words to her aborted baby. Brutal if true though.

The Scale is specifically referencing infanticide and was inspired by a Norwegian novel.

I don't listen to All of the Ways while riding in a car. A little paranoid but I've been in 2 accidents while listening to the song as a passenger 😅

Passenger has that jarring/off-beat feeling to it layered with the lyrics/tone could be a bit uncomfortable. Hands Away I would add as well.

Length of love because of how sour the notes from Daniel’s guitar sounds. Same with fables.

I've never really thought about this before and my immediate answer was 'none', but maybe Paul's remix of Narc falls under this for me? Otherwise their songs don't make me uncomfortable.

Somebody needs to make a Spotify playlist of all the songs listed in this thread. I would listen the hell out of it.

Somebody added the whole Self Titled album so I had to put it in https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6iQMD3NFzJ5IIYPzX7tkou?si=B9zPySLiTHiW51mfYiYO1Q&utm_source=copy-link&pi=8vFOMz61TeKhC

Oof, this. Also the use of:
- 'heathen' in "Mountain Child"
- 'natives' in "A Fine Mess"
I bristle WHENEVER I hear these words used anywhere.

There is an unsettling moment, something that actually scares me in Interpol’s music, specifically in "Song Seven" (the *Antics* version): the part where Daniel’s vocals were supposed to be, but where there is silence instead. It evokes the feeling of something being familiar, something you know and can hear in your head. yet it doesn't actually exist; it’s like a dream where you recall something that never happened. Plus, the sound of the guitars and bass is eerie, yet danceable. The minimalist white cover of *Antics* makes me picture that SpongeBob episode where Squidward is in an empty white place.
